Hi from "across the pond" in Boston, Mark ! I too own and love my Khaki set. I love how happy you got when you mentioned how you were shaving with a 102 year-old razor. I own many vintage razors. I always wonder who owned and loved them before I became their new caretaker. I sometimes say "Here's to you, Sir !" when I shave with them. Keep up the awesome videos...I watch every one. I recently became a member of your FB group. My favorite Gillette of all-time is my 1930s "The New" long comb. I NEVER get a sub par shave with that one, no matter which blade I use. Cheers to your continued good health, mate ! Rob

Hello Boston! 😃 Mate, I just cannot believe I'm shaving with something that has so much history attached to it. I absolutely love that about Gillette razors, in particular. That's a lovely way of looking at things, Rob. We are their caretakers! Thanks for watching, contributing and joining the group. I'm not so active on the group - I have an old iPad and the software doesn't like it anymore! That's a cheap trick isn't it? Forcing you to upgrade. Anyway, I digress! Take care, buddy 👍

Howdy Mark! Thanks for sharing your historic shave. I had a maternal uncle who fought with the U.S. Army in WW1 and had some lung damage as a result of a gas attack. He went on to a career as a fire fighter, so the slight lung damage didn’t disable him.

Friendship Shaving I recently re-watched a 2018 Peter Jackson documentary titled “They Shall Not Grow Old.” He did a masterful job colorizing and syncing voices to the silent/black and white film of that era. Hi Mark, hope you are keeping well. Great shave. What a lot of changes that razor has seen in its life, and what a story it could tell if it could talk. Staggering to think it's over 100 years old and is still going strong, they certainly knew how to make things in those days. Stay safe!
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 года назад
They certainly did know how to make things that lasted. I think that was the culture then. I like watching television programs where people restore and customise old American cars. Amazing! I can't imagine a modern care lasting do long or people wanting to restore them! 🙂 Take care.

That's an awesome razor. I've looked at gillette's on ebay and although some seem to be in worn condition that they could be restored or cleaned up. It's a shame I had a safety razor that may have been one of my Grandfathers and my mom got rid of it when cleaning out one of the bathrooms since I was using an electric shaver back then. Had I known what I do now I would've kept it and possibly used it.

I'll bet there are many people with similar tales to tell, Derek; it would be handy sometimes to have a crystal ball. My dad was a electric razor man, so I didn't get to inherit any of his old razors. It might seem strange to both our grandads, that these days people collect old razors.

Hi Mark, It would appear there were a number of copied razor designs in the early 1900s. The Gillette Khaki is a renamed Gillette Brownie (or vice versa), even down to the case minus the tacks. I'm surprised you did not comment on and show for comparison, the similarity to the Joseph Potter of Birmingham made 'Velvet' solid bar razor you own.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 года назад
Yes there certainly were. Your right the brownie did carry on after the khaki set. It may have had the 102a razor, with the larger head cap; I'll have to check that. Gillette were very good at making one razor and marketing it different ways. My Velvet! I haven't shaved with that for a while! Thanks for the reminder. Cheers.

@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 года назад
Such irony! I was reading about Germany's offer to Mexico, to come into the war against the U.S.A. where upon winning they would gain the land ceded to America in previous conflicts. With that, and a submarine campaign to sink all shipping, it seems that the German high command really wanted to engage the US in war. It seems a strange decision!
@Warren.I

My Grandpa left me his 1918 Gillette razor (#E5744473). It does not say "Property of U.S. Army" on it, but that's a relief since it would have been stolen property had it said that. (Grandpa did not become a U.S. citizen till after the war and therefore did not serve.) The razor has two other associations: the woman he would soon marry had survived the then-pandemic; and he shaved in the same bathroom that I do. I recently shaved with the razor and rather enjoyed it. Oh, and the model number for this razor is 102, fittingly enough. One observation on your experience: the Personnas are (it seems to me) very thick in contrast to the famously thin Gillette 7 O'Clocks from India. The latter may be closer to the blades for which this razor was made. Just something to consider.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 года назад
Oh, mate. What an absolutely brilliant story. I love this kind of personal history in a razor - it's just amazing and you still shave in your Grandpa's bathroom! That's it Warren, you can't ever move! Model number 102! Fantastic. I thought the old blades were quite thick, certainly thicker than a modern blade. I shall try, at some point, shaving with a Gillette black from India though and see how it feels in this razor. Cheers. I hope your keeping well 👍

@FriendshipShaving

No, it depends on the razor's design. There are razors that have both an open comb and closed comb side, I used one recently and the closed comb side was more aggressive. The 34c is a very mild razor You might try Merkur 33c which has an open comb; it's a lovely razor or some of the cheap, but they are good quality Yaqi open comb razors. You may find them slightly more efficient than the 34c but they are very nice razors to shave with.
