A proposed new bill aims to help fill Florida classrooms with more teachers by easing what it takes to become certified and how long candidates have to prove they deserve that teaching certification.

Seems like the right decision is to revise the test, not the requirements.

Before 2015 the passing rate for the GKT was much higher. After they made it harder now the passing rate is 30-50 % . If they didn’t change it they wouldn’t have a problem now.

I work at a high school where there are 20 long term substitutes everyday. What would you rather have 20 long terms, you can sub with a high school diploma BTW or qualified teachers who have 4 year degrees and are certified in subject matter in which they are teaching.

@@stayhoney6863 No, the level of education determines the pay. Kelly Services does subbing is certain parts of FL you can sub with a high school diploma but your pay is determined by your level of education up to a BA. You can Long Term sub with a high school diploma also you just won't get the extra money that comes with it.

Passing the GK test is but a minor challenge in the enormous monster that is the certification process created by the FL bureaucratic bean-counters who believe education should be run like a business. Not completing all the other certification hoops (and those other training hoops the county piles on top of them) within the 3 year time frame is, I believe as a teacher who went through it, is why most teachers end their career in year four. The office of certifcation at FLDOE does not even understand their own program requirements, refuses to administrate quality assurance and consistent application between the counties, claiming only the counties have power oversee their monster. As a critical need HS Math teacher, my Professional Cert was delayed entirely by the sponsoring Principal who did not have time to review my follow-up assignment on time - something completely beyond my control but the same county believes itself now justified in effectively ending my teacher career over sponsoring principal processing timeliness. Yes more time is needed! No, the answer is not to eliminate teacher qualifications like college degrees! Yes there needs to complete oversite, ownership, and state centralized streamlineling of follow-up activities to the state via an upload system if the state insists on their nececessity - not to overburder both teachers and students trying to get everyone booked and reviewed in time each Spring!

I actually have a bachelors in communications and a Masters in public affairs, and I have wanted to teach for a few years now, but obviously I don’t want to go back to school again. So I’ve been looking at alternative certification routes. There still isn’t a clear answer for me how to become a teacher in California or several other states. They keep saying the new teachers so badly and there is a shortage but I don’t see how this process isn’t streamlined or easily understandable. A lot of people will criticize the process and think that we are bringing lesser qualified teachers in, but that is not the truth, the problem is with higher education and the fact that it is constant siloization. Go to school for four years for a certain subject, and you only really get to see your concentration studies in the last two years if that, so by the time you’re halfway through, you might not even find out if this major is right for you or not. And by that time it is too late to switch unless you want to throw all that money down the drain. So most people like myself just complete the degree. We need more majors that are broadly focused and applicable to different things. And in the short term we definitely need alternative routes to become a teacher. Besides I think that most teachers, are so limited to teach strictly from the required books that their personal knowledge only goes so far.

This is the reason why there’s no teachers in the school and the children remains uneducated. In other countries they don’t have to go through any of this and the children are more advanced in learning

Yes the more they lower the bar on becoming a teacher, the more veteran teachers are walking away. This is a slap in the face to well educated veteran teachers. Anyone who can't pass these basic tests has no business educating others. And the evaluation part is BS because admins have their favorites and can give an effective teacher a bad evaluation if that person stands up for themselves and good evaluations to suck ups. Bottom line is stop lowering the bar and pay your veteran teachers what they should be making. 20 years exp in California would be making 100,000 l but in Florida it is only half that. Parents, who do you want teaching your kids? Any warm body they can dig up or someone who has dedicated their life to teaching?
