Ciao! Matt here with another Daily Shave in an classic Italian Shave with a vintage straight razor.
The Soap: Proraso shaving cream (green), menthol and eucalyptus. Proraso has been manufacturing shaving products since 1908 from Florence, Italy. Their green shaving cream is one of the most iconic in wetshaving. The scent is a 7/10 strength refreshing and invigorating menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor scent that evokes an Italian barbershop. The menthol is not enough to make my eyes water, but is a strong scent component and cools the face throughout the shave. Proraso represents one of the best value for performance soaps/creams. Though it is not in the same space as some of the newer elite
Artisan soaps, it performs well in many categories. The different scent offerings have different bases as well. This vegan soap is easy to lather, and has good cushion, glide, and post shave, and the lather remains stable throughout the shave (residual slickness is a bit lacking). At this price point, Proraso is king. If you love using traditional wetshaving soaps to connect to the past, Proraso green belongs in the lineup.
The Brush: Omega Professional 10049 Boar. This humble Italian boar brush brings a smile to my face every time. There is decent backbone despite the high loft, and the tips will continue to improve the more you use it. Pair with Proraso for the most traditional of Italian shaves.
The Razor: Tanifuji Spalding 6/8 full hollow vintage 1950’s razor. This Japanese steel shaves beautifully and is near mint.
Aftershave: Proraso (green) menthol and eucalyptus. Green, minty, refreshing, and cooling, the scent is similar to the soap without the camphor note. It lasts for about 3 hours on my skin and stays close to the skin. Great work scent.
Tip of the Day: Check out the video to see a foolproof face lathering routine.

i switched from the modern disposable to a "safety razor" around a year ago, easily my best decision in a while, i havnt tried the cream yet but was looking for videos of the use of cream instead of foam in a can, so after watching this video i will be buying the Proraso cream, i love eucalyptus.

thortheviking yes they are! I know you are a big Proraso fan. I just picked up the red as well. Incredibly they use real sandalwood essential oil - most others use a synthetic version. Quality soap and excellent value.

I recently bought the three cream tubes by Proraso. I prefer these to their tub soaps. Haven't tried a straight razor. That requires a lot of work on the blade to make it usable. I'll stick with DE razors for now. Nice job.

I like the tubes too, just very convenient and preserves the cream very well. Nothing wrong with using a DE , Love them too and get immense enjoyment from them, and can get very consistent and comfortable shaves

Proraso green products are fantastic! Wish i had the knack for the straight blade razor like you do but takes some very unique talent for one of those i just can't master. Great video and thank you!

Hi, Matt! I've not used my "regular" Proraso soaps in a bit. Nice looking razor. That's pretty much how I lather. The best way for me I've found. I thoroughly enjoy the Proraso Single Blade creams made for Barbers. I've got the Cypress & Vetyver scent.

Great shave video as always.👌 I have a question that I believe only a really experienced straight razor shaver like you can answer. How would you compare and contrast a straight razor shave to that of a DE shave? Assuming they both went great where everything came together just right. I’m especially interested in shave closeness vs comfort. Thank you.

Nice video. I have come to use mainly synthetic brushes, specially for creams, as I think getting a good lather is easier (shorter time); and these boars tend to "hog" / trap so much lather in them. For me is a matter of time and face confort..... Very nice blade!

Synth is the way to go for ease of use I like them as well, but I do prefer a natural hair brush for face feel and for holding heat.

Proraso Green is nice. The red one (Sandalwood) smells like a deer that died in a forest fire. I prefer the cream over the puck. It's less messy and I find it a bit slicker (but that could be my imagination).
@mattdailyshaver3782
@mattdailyshaver3782 5 лет назад
RedRisotto I have both red and green . I also prefer the green it’s definately less polarizing. I think the splash is fantastic - I use it more than any other . Never tried the puck so I can’t weigh in on the performance debate. I do like the convenience of the cream and the tube form especially for travel

@FÜHER FROG I drive down the 401 every week... so, every week... I have changed my mind though, the "red" is growing on me. It's actually quite nice when you stop salivating when thinking about forest fires.

I will try your technique next time I shave. I have that same Proraso menthol Cream tube and the slickness disappeared in the middle of shaving and it became sticky. I though Proraso was the problem, but watching your video I think that making a thick lather in a bowl is not a very good idea. That’s the way I was doing it.
@kelseymj1975
@kelseymj1975 4 года назад
do you find painting on the lather with a brush is as good as circular movements? Circular movements is supposed to lift the hairs to make the shaving easier. Painting on could plaster it down, making it more difficult?
@mattdailyshaver3782
@mattdailyshaver3782 3 года назад
I think painting works well at lifting hair if you are painting in the against the grain direction. I have found that circular movements can damage hairs - it torques the hairs especially in the center of the brush and can cause them to loosen and fall out. I think Simpsons recommends against it as well. But if it works for u go for it. Especially if u are using synths - then anything goes
@kelseymj1975
@kelseymj1975 3 года назад
@@mattdailyshaver3782 Thanks! I actually find that somehow I'm damaging (only slightly) the hairs on my synth brush and it's only a little more than a year old. I suspect it's because of the circular motions against the abrasive bumps within the shaving bowl.

What’s the difference between for hollow an extra Hollow? What do you think it’s a bad idea for a beginner to purchase a extra Hollow Razor to start with? Because I feel the 1/4 hollow on my gold dollar is easier to shave with than my Theirs-Issard extra hollow. I’m pretty new to straights..,about 8 or so shaves give or take
@mattdailyshaver3782
@mattdailyshaver3782 3 года назад
I think it’s just a matter of preference. Extra hollow has more metal ground out compared to a full hollow, is a little lighter and will have more feedback all things being equal. The different grinds all have their advantages and feel a bit differently in how that shave , but all can be equally sharp. The added weight in the quarter hollow gives a little more momentum, so increases the cutting power, which may work better for I especially if you have a heavier, coarser beard, or if you shave a little more slowly

Brave attempt and a very successful one at that. Not usual to use boar brushes to work a lather with a cream from a tube. Boar brushes are more commonly used on hard soaps, croaps. If a boar brush is to be used with a cream, it's one that is well broken in. (Your boar here might be that.) No matter though, you certainly built up a very good lather with a boar. After you, I ought to be a little more adventurous with my own boars. Is the boar you use here a well worn one? Thanks for uploading.
@mattdailyshaver3782
@mattdailyshaver3782 5 лет назад
K Theodor great question yes this one is well broken in. Most of the ends have split and the tips are very soft. Still has decent backbone even with the high loft.

Could a Proraso shaving cream be used to shave with a cartridge razor?

You could definitely use it but it may clog up the blades a bit, try it out. Or just get a safety razor ;)
