I’m a social worker in Canada. I had to complete a 5 years Bachelors of social work. I could do a masters, but it is not required in my province, unless you want to work for yourself in a private clinical setting, although it is different from province to province. I currently work within a psychiatric mobile crisis unit and love it (have been since 2013). I relate on so many things that you said. Thanks for sharing these videos, and don’t forget to take care of yourself as if you were caring for one of your best friend! We tend to forget ourself. The world needs more genuine social workers/persons like you.

Hi there! It’s always so fascinating to see how different requirements are depending on where we are and what we want out of a social work degree! Omg I have SO MUCH FRIGGING RESPECT for workers on mobile crisis units, you do AMAZING DIFFICULT but WORTHWHILE work.. THANK YOU! And thank you also for your encouragement, you’re totally right we need to focus on ourselves as well :) sending you strength at this time ^^*

No need for a Master's degree? Which province is that? I live in Quebec.
@danieboudreau3648
@danieboudreau3648 4 года назад
@@tonyderexxo7326 I Live in NB. The Master is not mandatory to work within public services, such as Hospitals, communities, schools, mental health and addiction. However, if you want to have a private practice, the masters is required in order to be recognized by insurance compagny (although, you can work in a private clinic with a BSW, but need to be supervised by a MSW). I worked in Ontario as well, and the masters is required for most of the places, however Child Protection Workers (which is where I was employed at the time) does not even require a social degree, nor be part of a professional association.... I worked with Child Protection Worker who had a criminology and psychology degree... But if we were not part of the SW association in Ontario, we could not present ourself as social workers. in NB, a BSW is mandatory to work in CPS. It's very different from province to province... not sure why??

@@danieboudreau3648 Interesting! What's it like in NB? I used to live in NS for school, and whenever I drove through NB, I noticed it's quite barren, and quiet in cities like Moncton. Lol, not sure if I was just there on the off days though. Heard housing is really cheap there though!

Thank you so much for making these videos. I've watched several of them now (as well as done a lot of research) and truly feel that this field is what I have been looking for. I have spent the last four years majoring in accounting but hating every moment of it internally. Finally, I decided that I couldn't lie to myself anymore and needed to do some soul searching. Your videos have resonated with me so much because all along I've wanted to help people, but I was too scared to take a leap.

You know, I was debating about social work mainly because of the work-life balance. But I realized while you were talking about the pros that I felt SO invigorated. And if someone else's lived experiences can make me feel like that, I don't think the work-life balance will be too much of a problem when at the end of most days, I'll feel like I made a difference in someone else's life, too. I think my initial apprehension was because my past jobs never sparked something in me; I was always anticipating clock-out so I can go back to something that actually interested in me. But I don't think that'll be an issue once I find my niche in this field. Thank you so much for making videos :) They definitely solidified my choice to take the next steps toward social work.

It took an awfully long time for me to fully discover social work for what it actually is. I am a social science student and am in university for sociology. Similarly, I also thought that law would have to be the route I would take into helping other people, so I did all the research into a confusing, expensive law conversion course. Law doesn’t match my personality in the respect that social work does. Once I established exactly what social work is and how it encompasses this whole variety of work that is geared toward helping people, I knew then that this is what I want to do. I simply had no idea that social work is what I had been searching for and there is so very much to explore with this career whilst ultimately, I get to do something that is true to my values and that hones in on my natural abilities, too.

I also live in NJ. I dated a lot of social workers. One thing that I find troubling is that I have heard them complain that helpful social program proposals get rejected by management. Secretly because if people become permanently rehabilitated, the firm will potentially run out of cases, leading them to lose funding and go out of business. Do you ever worry that this could be true in some cases?
@hi.yeonni
@hi.yeonni 4 года назад
Hi there, I haven’t heard of the specific type of situation but I definitely have come across corporate/ higher management not taking social work program proposals seriously because they don’t want to spend money on them. It’s truly disheartening because a lot of the times, workers on the front line like social workers who are working with clients are stuck in the middle not being able to fully help because of corporate :( I’d become discouraged at times but had to focus on trying my best to do everything I can for my clients, despite upper managements apparent lack of empathy for clients. I guess at the end of the day for the people running the show everything is a business :/

I am a medical social worker and traveler social worker with an LCSW in several states and I get paid very well way over 6 figures. I love this profession and agree that we need more restructuring but so do a lot of other disciplines. The great thing about social work is that we can work in so many areas especially if you get a license. Also this degree Partners well with other degrees if you decide to branch into something else. No matter what you do if you continue to add to your level of experience, specialty and license.....you can go far and even get paid the same or more than some other lucrative professions but it does take time experience, expertise and for sure a license! Good luck!

I have my degree in psychology. I worked in the field for 4 years in D&A behavioral health. It was a toxic atmosphere and I left. I work in a hospital now, and haven't worked in social work in several years. Sometimes I want to go back, but unfortunately, agencies in my area aren't great. It's definitely one of the most difficult careers that exists. You get very little reward and society in general looks down on social work. Also, it's 💯 true that coworkers in the field can be straight up toxic. With that said, on a good day, where you actually helped someone find housing, insurance, food, clothing..it's a great feeling. Also, agencies typically have good health insurance because the pay is so low. Where I used to work I didn't pay a penny for healthcare, even when I had surgery.

Hi! I'm new here and I'm loving your videos. I'm currently debating between USC, NYU and Columbia (MSW program) and would love to stay here in LA (I'm a non-traditional student at UCLA right now) but I'm definitely considering NYC because I don't want to close any doors. Do you: (1) Think it's more wise to accept a program where you would ideally like to live and gain connections there, or to branch out and go somewhere new for two years then relocate? (2) I watched another video of yours that mentioned NYU being more micro and clinical over Columbia, which is known for being more macro/policy inclined. Would you say this is still true, considering Columbia has an advanced clinical track? Maybe this track is new? I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice on all of this! These three schools are so expensive and there are mixed reviews as to whether the price tag is worth the prestige... and the potential doors these sxhos could potentially open. Thanks (so much!) in advance. :)

Thank you for your video!! I have a desire to conduct psychotherapy as well as being a case manager/advocate.. is it possible to do both for the purpose of not getting bored and increased income? Trying to decide between a psychology masters or a MSW!! Thanks!

Wow great speaking skills. I wanted to know did you write out what your going to say before you say it? and do you follow it exactly or you just go with flow every once in a while? I wanted to know because I'm interested in public speaking.

Hey Hiyeonni ,I hope u would consider this question. . I took my BCA degree in India. ..but i wanted to go for MSW for my further studies abroad (Canada/US)..I just wanted to ask whether I would be able to go for that course(MSW/BSW) or anything related to it, despite taking a whole different course here.

thanks for watching! I’m not sure how to recommend where to work since there’s honestly sooo many settings! it all really depends on where you live, your background, your credentials, what you’re looking for.. it’s definitely a lot of options!

Thanks for these videos, I graduated with a bachelors in biology. I've spent the past 6 years hustling making good money bartending and modeling. Last year I suffered from severe General Anxiety, and with the help of therapy and self-help cognitive work such as meditation I recovered. As I grow older I want to use my intellectual capabilities to make a living I identify better with. I got accepted into an MSW program at UIC this Fall. I want to be a LCSW therapist to help others with anxiety in particular. I enjoy helping and have a good heart; however I'm anxious about committing to the program because I have no experience with social work, and have no idea if I would actually enjoy it/ or even be capable of doing it. These videos have been really helpful in enlightening me with what to expect, please keep them coming. If you could go back, would you do anything differently? Also are there good part-time gigs for qualified social workers? (If I wanted to keep bartending for awhile on weekends)
@hi.yeonni

hi there! first off, congrats on getting into UIC for social work that’s fantastic! dont worry too much about the lack of experience, honestly you’ll learn so much from the field placement and i believe so much of this field is learning in the environment! be patient with yourself and open-minded, you’ll learn all you’ll need to know not only in the classes, but honestly more so in the internships! interesting question, if i went back to school (I’m assuming that’s what you’re asking?) I’m not sure if I’d do anything differently? first year i struggled a bit because i had to advocate for myself a lot, and i was learning how to, but second year i really came into understanding how to advocate for myself! i met amazing colleagues and professors, and for the part-time gig, it’s really hard to find a part time job (at least it was for me), due to the demands of the program but i did end up finding a remote research assistant job for a professor! but bar tending probably has more evening hours? so that definitely could be possible! and probably a good balance to the student-life during the day :) best of luck!

@@hi.yeonni Thanks for the response. I more so meant if you could go back would you go into a different field of social work? Or are you where you want to be? Secondly, why did you feel like you had to advocate for yourself? Lastly, Ill bartend through school for sure, I more so meant after school once you graduate. But I see what you mean as lack of part time due to demand of work.

Can you please make a video on how you are managing Nyu loans? I’m starting my MSW journey this coming fall and I got into both NYU and Hunter College. They’re both great but my number one choice is NYU but it’s a lot of money and I’ve never taken loans so I’m thinking of settling with Hunter.

Hi! I am a student at Keuka College and I am working on getting my bachelor's in psychology( I will be a junior in the fall). At my college, we have a program that requires all students to do 4 internships during the 4 years. Do you have any recommendations in regards to good places to do an internship at? I still don't know what I want to do when I graduate and its so frustrating!

Other than case management, are there other better options if one obtains a bachelor's degree? I better make sure the salary is better than what I get as an SUD counselor. My current job is pretty great, but obviously as a SUD counselor you do hit a bit of a brick wall career-wise, which I am considering...

Hi, Hyeonni! Here is another Asian woman passionate about helping people. But my problem is that I grew up speaking Mandarin, but English -- Do you think I could have enough clients to make a living in college town in midwest? My English is good (with a PhD from this country and able to lecture to college students in English) but will never sound completely native. I have to be in the US for family's sake. Do you know any immigrants in your field? How is the market for them? I'm thinking of getting a master of social work to be a counsellor, but I want to know more about the market before I jump in. Thanks so much!

I love your videos! Do you have any advice for me dealing with pressure from my parents/society to work a role in Engineering because it pays well and is safe? I graduated in Engineering and now have a job in IT and really have wanted to get into social work. I want to pursue a Masters, but I know it will disappoint or shock my parents. Any advice on how I can get the strength to do this??
@hi.yeonni

What a wonderful question. My supervisor who is a licensed psychologist actually also comes from an IT background! Hmm well for me, when I told my parents I wanted to be a social worker, they were pretty much like, “well.. you better marry a rich man then” (I KNOW, RIGHT) But I was just like, this is my life, this is what I Want to do which will make me happy. And At first there was definitely a lot of resistance, but what are they going to do, I believe parents generally want their kids to just be happy and be able to take care of themselves. So when I followed through, got into NYU, graduated, did internships, got good jobs, my parents finally sort of “let up” on their negative feedback. It took time, a lot of patience, a lot of not letting their negativity cloud my goals... but in the end I believe it was worth it ^^ best of luck, you got this !!

I used to be in software engineering and now I'm pursuing a career in couselling. I've heard of lots of people who have done the same so you're not alone! The advantage of having worked in IT is that it pays well, so I didn't have to take out any student loans when transitioning to psychology. My parents were also concerned about the money but social workers and therapists can actually make a lot in Canada. besides, you can also do some side jobs like day trading, which is a viable way to make money for those who are engineer- minded. Both counselling and day trading are flexible in terms of time so i think that would work very well together.

If you don’t mind my asking, what is the average salary you’ve seen for social workers in California? I’ve been looking online and the range of what people call a “starting salary” is huge
@hi.yeonni
@hi.yeonni 4 года назад
i think it really depends on the city, California is huge, so living costs are extremely different depending on where you live. the starting salary for San Francisco is much higher than one in Los Angeles, but that’s also because SF is extremely expensive when it comes to living expenses and rent!
