Students! It is possible to go straight into hearts out of school. You just have to find the right facility. Ortho is the money maker of majority of the hospitals. So learning how to do a few ortho cases is key. Ophthalmology is great to have on your resume as well. A lot of hospitals have a specialty eye team just like hearts, and they pay more. If you do robot cases. Make sure to do a wide variety. Not just general, not just gyne. But be able to go into urology, thoracic and ENT for robots. Robots doesn’t just mean the Si, Xi, and SP. but neuro spine has robots and so does ortho for joints. Vascular surgery, specifically endovascular surgery is great to know too. Some hospitals have their own vascular team aside from hearts and knowing that specialty is amazing for your skills in case you get into crazy predicaments but it also looks great for recruiters. Not all hospitals make you choose specialties so that is something I would suggest you don’t take in unless it’s a place that does teams. Aside from that, try to learn EVERY specialty.
@SURGICALTECHGEEK
@SURGICALTECHGEEK 3 года назад
Realistically, very low % of hospital hires without experience and go straight to hearts. Not gonna say never but very little %. And hospitals aren't the ones that chooses your cases during clinicals. It's the preceptor. Everything else that isn't a speciality can be learned on the job while the rest are hard to get into if they have teams as you mentioned. Anyone can be taught a lap chole in a week but total joints take awhile. Good points though! I'm with the vascular team and i love doing endo aaa!

Thank you for the in depth video explaining the harsh realities of both pros and cons. Tho it doesn’t seem to take long to become a CST, the wages, and physical demand of being on call and constantly lifting heavy object and being standing for long periods of time sold out for me personally. As you mentioned this may not be too bad if you’re an income-driven workaholic but, as a family man, this is the deal breaker for me. I commend anyone who pursues this career, and as many online income statuses show, it may not be “worth” it, but that’s why you gotta love just doing it as only certain specialties generate actual income higher than the national avg.
@SURGICALTECHGEEK
@SURGICALTECHGEEK Год назад
In everything in life, you gotta start somewhere. You can't ask for higher wages without a background. With just 1 year of dedication you can drastically change your income 2 to 4x as much if you travel. All it takes is 1 year. As far as lifting rep trays, there's a max limit of weight for trays. Don't quote me but it can't be heavier than 30 lbs due to wrap and sterility issues. For calls, there's no way around it, it's required everywhere. It's not for everybody and I hope one day you get to find your passion. ❤️

@SURGICALTECHGEEK 2 года назад
To get through PA, you need a bachelors. ST is associates and can give you a head start. If I were you I'd do sonography.
@Baconbeater
@Baconbeater 2 года назад
I know I’m not part of this thread but do not do surgical tech. Surgical tech is way more specialized and it’s own path as opposed to the rest of those professions that are somewhat intertwined. Surgical tech also requires WAY more knowledge/schooling to get through than the rest of those choices, and to be honest is more stressful, too, at least for me it was. Do CNA or EMT-B; it’s quick, you get good exposure, it fulfills your pre clinical hours, and doesn’t overload your brain with stuff that you will not use. The whole point is to get your clinical hours quick and easily so you can do what you initially set out to do. Phlebotomy, EMT-B, and CNA all have overlapping skills, whereas surgical tech does not. It’s way too specialized, and the VAST majority of skills that you learn in there are not applicable to other professions. CSTs only really make sense as surgical team members, in SPD, or as a Rep for a company. There is one exception, though. If you’re deeply interested in surgery, then CST would be the way to go. However, PAs aren’t being used as much anymore in the OR, they’re used in CLINIC, where experience as a former EMT-B or CNA would be MUCH more beneficial. No point in paying 150k plus for a PA in the OR when the hospital could easily have a resident, CST, or ortho tech assist-for 35% of the cost and just have the surgeon close. Let me add that there is another exception: if you plan to go into private practice. However, the VAST majority of PAs do not go that route; ultra small minority. I know you had also said that you might want to go MD or NP; CST would be even less useful in those fields unless you were trying to become a surgeon, and that’s why I focused more on PA then the other options
@jadehuffer2838
@jadehuffer2838 2 года назад
How does gaining experience in certain specialties work? I was under the impression that the hospital will just put you wherever you're needed and you have no say in what kinds of operations you assist with. Also, when you say clinicals do you mean clinicals as apart of your training or something else?
@SURGICALTECHGEEK
@SURGICALTECHGEEK 2 года назад
Clinicals are for school. In the beginning, they put you everywhere because as a brand new tech, you don't really know yet where you're good at. It took me 6 months to see where I'm strong and that's when I tell them I'd like to be in, for example, vascular cases as much as possible and they would. Varies by facility.

This career is very interesting! I learned and saw a ton of stuff however it is very under paid. I ended up going back to bartending and am currently in nursing school. I am both thankful for the experience but also regret putting so much into school for 2 years for a degree I won't use anymore. Definitely look into it more before doing it! If 20 and hour (minus benefits and taxes) is worth it go for it. You are the first one in and the last one out of the the OR and many people look down on you since you don't hold a license (cst is a certification even with an associate degree so they are able to pay you less).

I have a history of seizures (they’re controlled w only lifestyle now bc I’ve grown out of the a little) and not getting full sleep for even one night can put me at risk for them. If I had to stay awake for 24hrs it would be literally unsafe for me. I'm back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner and currently taking some prerequisite classes. I've been a CNA for over 6 years and I love being in the nursing field but I don't like the responsibility of being a Nurse. I'm not good at that. So I came across talking about Surgical Tech in my biology book, so it got me interested in it and searched up more about this field. I've watched different videos and now it got me thinking of switching my career into becoming a Surgical Tech... my question is, is being in that field worth it? What do you exactly do during surgery? what is your main responsibility? Thanks...

Advil. Tylenol. If you have allergies, take your meds because you don't wanna be sneezing if you have a hood on during ortho. Most terrible thing. Hello and thank you very much for your execellent detailed information regarding Cst. I ran into a private school in the bay area couple days ago to findout about the cst. Listen to you and read all of comments, I was first very excited that I think I found a great career to change to when i’m in the late 40s. But then, at one point, you mentioned a coworker quits then go back to work at chilis for more money. I’m honestly discouraged. I have a family to take care off and the tuition I will have to pay is close to $20K for the 12-months cst program. I will have to pay cash which I might have to borrow from relatives. I’m scared! Isn’t it the average salary for cst is 60k - 100k for bay area as I google it? I’m so sorry writimg for so long but I’m at a turning point before taking the money paying the school. Your advice is greatly appreciate. Thank you Surgey Tech

She was a special case because she wanted to make money but didn't wanna take calls. She always call out and never sign up for extra shifts. She did not go back to chilis but she did quit to do non Healthcare home job but she quit that too and went back to scrubbing at a different private hospital for more money. My loan was 28k minimum. I did what I can to pay my loans while in school. I did work study while my colleagues bought cars, bags, vacations. With my job, I'm almost done paying it off. I was scared to take that much money out but i wanted it soooooo bad. Think about investing on yourself. You need gas to fuel the car. You need food to sustain your body. Same thing. You need to invest on yourself to see growth. You'll age in 2 years with loans. Why not age in 2 years with an associates degree and a dream job? It's all about perspective. Hope that helps!
