Let's be honest, surgeons (and even other physicians) can be very emotionally childish, yelling and having temper-tantrums. I had an anesthesiologist yell at me one day while I was working on a nursing unit, he was upset because the secretary had left her desk and I couldn't find the surgical consent packets. I looked him in the eye and said "I am not YOUR personal secretary, and I will not be spoken to like that, find the packet yourself" and I walked away! I will not tolerate that kind of bullshit from a doctor or anyone else!

I was a scrub tech for 17 years. I met many that became a first assist but I was already first assisting and making more than the first assist. I also never had those experiences of being yelled at like that during those 17 years. I could not justify paying to go back to school to become a certified first assist when I was already doing so. I just became a certified PA as that was the next step for me. There is not much more to learn in surgery for me. Surgical tech is an amazing intro to being in medicine. Just keep a cool mind and pay very close attention and be willing to ask questions. Also study your anatomy!!! Also work in nothing but trauma centers and at night if you can. You will learn it all. Amazing field and I will miss it. It is also a good way to get into PA school!!

Great job and great guest. Wow! I am learning so much. Yes, some doctors will yell and be angry and probably want you to dismiss yourself immediately. If that gets to be the case, WAIT until another scrub tech is present and ready to take over for you. REMEMBER, at the end of the day, it's about the PATIENT and [respectfully] NOT THE DOCTOR. 😉😊

Great informative video! If possible can you do a video on what's the difference in all the different types of First Assist? Such surgical first assist, nurse first assist, PA working in surgery as First Assist. Do all the positions get paid the same amount as a First Assist? That would be an awesome video if you can get in contact with each of those professions and interview them at the same time!!!

I am not in the field, just doing my research to see if Surgical Tech is something I might like to do. I'm hearing from multiple sources that Surgeons and nurses yell at and mistreat their techs. Why is this allowed in hospital culture? It seems so inappropriate and unfair. So nurses get yelled at too? I understand performing surgery on a person is a huge deal and the pressure must me insane but doesn't seem right to scream at another person doing their best?

PA, is a physician assistant I am assuming you are talking about, that is a masters degree and they can do a lot more than assist a surgeon, including full assessments, ordering tests and medications etc, not the same, and definitely not an equivalent to a surgical tech or surgical first assist.
@SURGICALTECHGEEK
