Hi Lindsey, I am a relatively new RN of almost four years. I did LTC for the first year out of school and for the last 3 I have been working with ID and special needs population. This is a supervisor and DCS instructor position. I have always had an interest in dialysis nursing since my LTC position. I have been looking for another position and I am always drawn back to dialysis! My biggest hang up(and only) is that I am a young 60! Physically I'm good no meds no issues for me ... What is your opinion? Are there older dialysis nurses around?
@dialysisnurselindsey
@dialysisnurselindsey 2 года назад
Depends on the clinic! Are u looking at clinic setting or Hospital dialysis! I would give it a shot! And try to shadow at the clinic after the interview to get the vibe. Are u in a rural area or more “city”. Yes, a young 60…this is awesome!
@penandpencilplow
@penandpencilplow Год назад
Hi there, I would think your age wouldn’t be cared about as long as you can physically do the job. There’s individuals out there who are in their 50s/60s and look 15 to 20 years younger than their age. I’ve seen them! Anyway, you’ve already communicated you’re in healthy shape. That’s what matters. It’s the person not the age. There’s a shortage of dialysis nurses. I would think you’d stand an excellent opportunity to be hired at many clinics/hospitals. Dialysis/Nephrology nursing is autonomous and intellectual. It requires early very early mornings and handling being able to filter the blood out of someone and circulate it back in using a machine. Potential employers will be looking at ability to do the job, no matter the age. Also prisons are eager to hire nurses and an option for any aged nurse. I hear it’s great autonomy.

When you say bending, what if there’s a wheel chair you can sit on and roll it?

Do you need experience as a chronic dialysis nurse before they will let you be an acute dialysis nurse? I currently have 4 years of hospital bedside RN experience, with no HD experience.

I was offered an acute HD position and had no prior HD experience.. I believe they want you to have at least icu or ED experience if u lack dialysis experience before allowing you to enter into acute HD but I’m not sure.

@@dialysisnurselindsey thanks; however, I ultimately decided to do Chronic dialysis due to location and work life balance. (Don’t want to be on call). But who knows? Maybe I will switch over to acute once i gain more experience. I have ED experience and I am used to switching patients often.
