Rule of thumb is to live and work on the same side of the water. Both are great but leave the tunnel driving to weekends and visits to your friend’s house.
I've been living in Hampton well over a decade & it is very true that there isn't a lot to do here. Crime has really gone up & a lot of us residents are fed up with it too!
I love the history lesson in each video. Request: can you make a pro and con about living in Virginia, in general? Also, I think they should feature you on the state's site. You would make an excellent guide.
ANDYDAVIRGO wow! Thank you, Andy!! That's an awesome compliment. Makes the video-creation process feel very worth it! A general VA state video is a great idea, and I'll add that to my list for sure. Thanks to you!
Lifelong Hampton resident here, and you're absolutely correct - Fort Monroe is amazing! Tons of (non-boring) history, water everywhere, a couple lovely very small beaches, quiet, and away from the madding crowd. Also, summer concerts at two venues, a fun beach club in the old officer's club, and a couple miles of the best sunny, breezy, low-key boardwalks around.
Hampton Resident here. Have to call you out on this one. Langley, VA. and Langley Air Force Base in Hampton is not the same place. Langley is an unincorporated community in the census-designated place of McLean in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Langley is often used as a metonym for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as it is home to its headquarters, the George Bush Center for Intelligence. The land which makes up Langley today once belonged to Thomas Lee, former Crown Governor of the Colony of Virginia from 1749 to 1750. Lee’s land was named Langley in honor of Langley Hall, which was part of the Lee home estate in Shropshire, England.[2] In 1839, 700 acres (283 ha) of land was purchased by Benjamin Mackall from the Lee family, while keeping the name.[citation needed] Meanwhile Langley Field was named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, an aerodynamic pioneer and a former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Langley began aerodynamic experiments in 1887 and formed a basis for practical pioneer aviation. He built and saw the first steam model airplane in 1896 and the first gasoline model in 1903. Both planes were believed to be capable of flight. He also built the first man-carrying gasoline airplane in 1903, which failed to fly on its first attempt and broke apart and crashed on its second. It was, after major modification eleven years later, flown "successfully" by Glenn Curtiss for a little over 3 seconds, traveling 150 feet through the air in 1914.[6] Langley Field was the first Air Service base built especially for air power, is the oldest continually active air force base in the world, and is the oldest airfield in Virginia. Source Wikipedia. BTW another 'Pro' is that Hampton doesn't flood out as much as the southside when it comes to rainstorms because the city wasn't built on a dry river bed.
lived in ENC forever and Hampton/Norfolk area has always had the reputation as being a pos, especially when it takes several minutes to clarify why it may not be - everyone talks about the violence caused by the obvious that's why maybe the real estate is 'cheaper' as buffed - thanks for the video
Thank you! I do like to throw in the little tidbits. I actually learn a lot myself as I'm making these local videos because there are multiple layers to the historical context of each city.
Great timing! At 8:00 tonight I will! Pros and Cons of Living in Williamsburg is posting this evening :) Let me know if you have any questions after watching it.
the schools here still suck though. the staff in hampton schools is unresponsive to parents, and NEVER call anyone back. They take forever to post grades, to the point of it being too late to do anything about bad grades, by the time they post them. most of the high schools smell like weed.
Hollywood FL Realtor Kate Smith thank you very much! Hampton is a bit of a hidden treasure with regards to its American history. Glad you like the video! Appreciate you watching.
RU-vid's algorithm said I had to watch this 😁 Another great vid Sam. Growing up at the beach I always thought the peninsula was this mysterious place equal with NYC 😁
Thank you!!! Hahaha, glad RU-vid wanted you to watch it, and also glad that you decided to, ha! To many on the Southside people do think the Peninsula is a mysterious place.
The Chamberlain still has Sunday brunch it’s just not near as good as it used to be. I live in Hampton and working in Norfolk. My job is less than 20 miles away takes me on average an hour and a half to get home every day and can take up to 2 1/2 hours in either direction. I still live on the side of the water because it is far cheaper what would cost 220,000 here is easily 350,000 or higher Norfolk. There is no nightlife here at least not any that you would actually want to be a part of crime has gotten out of control. I really do love Hampton but I can’t afford the rent on for Monroe or any other good area so unfortunately I will probably have to move.
As a native and former resident of Hampton, that city is not as beautiful as one might think. As far as going swimming in the Cheaspeake Bay, I wouldn't do it. When the health department has to check the water every morning for fecal bacteria to determine rather or not the local beaches can be opened, that is not saying much about the health of the Cheaspeake Bay let alone the beauty of the cities that border the Cheaspeake.
I visited Hampton 8 years ago and I enjoyed it, but to me it seems like it would be a better place to live when I retire or near that age because it was very laid back but he's right because I didn't find much night life things going on .
Yeah but Buckroe is a horrible place to live... a matter of fact I just had a shooting in the park not that long ago a 7 year old and 11 year old got shot
Good stuff as always. Seems like some nice riverfront property on the Hampton River. VA Hospital and medical center. Veterans cemetery. The Hamptons Golf Course is a true jewel. Plus Tommy and the Bull immortalized Hampton with "We are from Hampton" to the tune of "We are the Champions". Until next week.
Plan on relocating to Hampton soon. Don't know how to feel about this video, many slavery overtones. While in the music business I visited Hampton University and at that time a high school "aquintence" attended. Remember walking the shore with her in front of the chamberlain. Fond memories...
I noticed Hampton has got bad with crime in the last 5 years it wasn't like that when I was a kid. I probably wouldn't never move back to Hampton. If I moved to the area it would be Poquoson or York county.
Watching your video of Hampton, having been a 20 year resident from the age of about 6 months, a graduate of Hampton High School - Class of '75 - until I married an Airman from Langley the following year at Newport News Park, and had been living "a hop, skip and a jump" from where I had been living in the Cherry Acres area at the time. I was good with everything you said, until your commentary on Langley Air Force Base, repeated an oft mistaken MYTH about Langley A.F.B. - the CIA is NOT headquartered on Langley A.F.B. - it is located in LANGLEY, Virginia, which is much much closer to Washington, D.C. Other than that, everything else sounds good. Unfortunately, I have been located in Indiana since a year after my husband and 💑 I got married, when he got discharged from the Air Force, and took me with him (of course)to his home state, to live near his own family. Talk about CULTURE SHOCK!! 😲 Try relocating yourself from the ocean breezes and Chesapeake Bay culture to the middle of landlocked farm country!😨🚜 And just in time for the Blizzard of '78? (Look it up.) But, it's been home now for over 40 years, and I'm not too sure that I could really adjust myself back to the Hampton Roads area on a permanent basis?🙅 But, home is where your heart is, and I left a pretty good sized chunk of mine right there! And yes, Hampton High School has an amazing history of sports. Just check out the history of their football coach!! Mike Smith has been their coach since LBJ was President!! And, he's STILL THERE! And they also having an enviable record as a team. He was coach when I was there, and I was just sure he would have been retired in 10 years, but oh, silly me! He lives on!
First of all, I had to eat crow about that Langley statement, hahaha. Thanks for the comment about it! I actually made a correction in the description bringing up my gaffe, which to me was a ridiculous gaffe! I've had many client joke me about that one. Thank you so much for the thoughtful and detailed feedback and stories about you! Mentioning Mike Smith was another nice add that I didn't put in this video. But yes, culture shock from here to Indiana sounds quite extreme! The Blizzard of '78 sounded wild! "The Snow That Wouldn't Stop"! You'll never see that here, ha!
@@samsansalone - Sorry, Sam. Pass the salt and a little of that "crow" over my way. My bad - I missed your correction in print on your error on Langley A.F.B. being the HQ for the C.I..A.! Mea culpa! Another pro about living on the water is the softness of said water! Compared to my current, and long term home in the "Midwaste," the water here requires a hammer and chisel (or a very heavy duty water softener) just to get a shower or do the dishes! Heaven help the laundry! The iron level in the water up here makes it possible to get your own "fake tan" just by standing in the water spray! For real, without having a water softener, your plumbing fixtures are all the same color, no matter what color they start out when purchased - a dark brownish orange!😣 Something about the geographic location has enough iron in the water that you don't need iron supplements in your diet! It's really distressing. But, like I said before, it's become home. I miss my eastern home though, but the problem is, I miss my home there as it WAS, not as it is now. I think it's really true, that you just can't go home again.
You've gotta try Musasi if you haven't. They have silver and gold chopsticks for regulars and literally the best sushi! Do you think home values will go up once they complete the tunnel in 4 years or so?
I absolutely think so - I think this could be a sneaky good spot for some value/speculative appreciation. Many people don't pick Hampton because they're commuting across the tunnel and many don't want to deal with the hassle. I'm really hoping the tunnel expansion changes this and if it does I could definitely see a rise in prices as people take advantage of the price difference.
Yeah traffic in the 757 in the worst!!! The crime is bad too....somebody literally stole my whole truck 1 year ago. ....buuuuut, I love living here though compared to other places I have lived🤷🏾♀️
I would not go under that tunnel if there was always traffic. Yikes I fear of things like that truck that was on fire and being stuck or even on a bridge.. lol
AWESOME feedback, thank you! The answer is most definitely YES. There are some areas in the York Country that are quite important for me to do soon. Will be putting them out as soon as humanly possible!
Was stationed at Langley AFB... no such thing as CIA there. Favorite restaurant was Capt Georges (seafood buffet) on waterfront Hampton. Buckroe beach was ok but really liked Grandview beach since never crowded which had limited parking and long walk to beach (has that changed?).
First of all, great feedback all around. And I don't know if you saw the message I posted in the comments about my gaffe. But yeah, I totally got the Langley thing wrong. Love the constructive feedback! I want to always be accurate.
Yeah, I had to eat crow on this one. In the remarks I put in there that I screwed this part up, but the problem is once you post a video on RU-vid you can't edit it, so I had to make the comment in the description showing where I messed up. Thanks for keeping me accountable!
This is often why people tend to choose cities in the Southside (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, etc), so you're not alone. Thanks for watching, Jose!
Mr Williamsburg John Womeldorf yeah I had to eat humble pie with that one. I caught my error and made mention in the description of what I had said that was incorrect. Sadly with RU-vid once it’s out there, it’s out there! 😃 Appreciate you mentioning this, if you see anything else please feel free to let me know. I try very hard to make sure everything I say is 100% accurate!
I"m getting stationed there this season. Can you tell me anything specifically about the Little England neighbor hood. I've tried searching but information is somewhat scarse at best.
Great question! As far as a real estate neighborhood categorization, it spans over from the east side of the water (near a place called Cedar Point) and then all the way west towards West Pembroke Ave. Generally speaking the area is quieter the farther east and south you go. Streets between Pembroke and Victoria Ave are the busiest and if possible I'd look at as close to the water as possible, though the drawback of getting too close to the water is flood insurance, if you're buying. Are you trying to buy in there? There are also some new construction in there and isn't too expensive, though you get what you pay for. The lower the price of a new construction house typically the more you're sacrificing in neighborhood and overall location quality, generally speaking.
Hiii i am a undergraduate student and i am thinking to go to old dominion university for my graduate study..... so plzzz help me regarding the cost of living , part time job availability......... as i am an international student. That will help me a lot
1. Crime. 2. Traffic. 3. No mountains. 4. Mosquitoes (will eat your face off your body). *sad face* :'( 5. Flooding. 6. On the coast (think hurricanes). 7. Boring. Edit: Nah man, I think maybe I should stay away from Hampton. I was stationed in Portsmouth, Virginia and that place was straight up ghetto.
How tf is it boring and crime is not bad mountains do not matter. And it’s super fun they just build a little water park seems like u never been there. Your probably jealous because you live in Detroit or something.
@@Totallyrealmessi23 I'm not sure why you mentioned Detroit, because I'm actually from Virginia, as in Salem, Virginia. Salem is quite beautiful and peaceful. More rural than anything. You should come visit. 😊
@@Totallyrealmessi23 We have farmers markets, fairs, and live performances at our civic center. It's more of a hometown feel. Very clean. We're most definitely surrounded by mountains (valley) and nowhere as busy as northeast Virginia. We're southwest close to West Virginia.

I noticed that yiou deleted my comment! Can't accept the truth about what I stated about Hampton, can you? That is all well and good. I know the truth, that is all that matters. Everyone else is just going to have to learn the truth Hampton the hard way
@@jaymiejustice9708 High murder rate and drug rates. The police would rather harrass drivers who work the late shift and have to be out past midnight than do something about the crime rate. High taxes. It takes them 35 years to get roads paved despite having the very high tax rate. Hampton is quick to confiscate property without compensation (The Old Pine Chapel Village proves that one). If you owe them taxes, they will garnish your entire paycheck instead of working with you. If you leave the city and own no property in the city, you still receive a tax bill from them and they continue with the hollow threats until you threaten them with lawsuit if the threats don't stop immediately. Very corrupt leaders. They don't take care of their parks nor their schools and many sewers a caving in on themselves. They don't do health inspections on restaurants. I could go on and on, but I think you have gotten a picture what Hampton has become and it's a shame.
I also forgot to tell you "Any history that once calls Hampton home no longer exists." Hampton tore all that down back in the 1980's and did so in the name of progress.
I was so engaged by this video, then you seemed to gloss over that the White Lion was a slave ship, it is regarded as the origin of enslaved Africans in English colonies in mainland North America. That’s nothing to be happy about. Please note this.
