I got microlocs in July 7th 2023 and let me tell you starting them off as twist created a fullness on my thin hair. They where braided at the root though. I was scared for years to start them but I honestly have no regrets.

Loved this video. Your personality is everything! I’m 17 months loc’d. I established my micro locs with 2 strand twists not knowing that they would shrink to my head in 3 weeks. I persevered and never had an ugly hair day. A lot of that is mental. Once I decided to embrace the frizz, also about 3 weeks in, my locs embraced me back. It’s been a love affair ever since.
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany 9 месяцев назад
Hello Beauty!! Thanks so very much I truly appreciate that! Yes this journey is all about the embrace with the good and what some consider the bad. It’s truly a journey but one that you don’t have to do over! Congrats on getting Loc’d yourself and thanks so much for watching and supporting! 🖤

i started my dreads myself four months ago. i had bleached my hair and done everything under the sun after big chopping in 2017. my hair was mid back length and i got sick of doing my hair so i did two strand twists. cause i love the look of two strand twists on myself and then i went back and interlocked my roots because it holds better than the traditional palm roll method and my ends are curly. i have a spray bottle filled with water, tea tree oil, lavender oil, rose oil, jojoba oil that i use to moisturize. then afterwards i have a separate bottle filled with the same oils that i use to seal in the moisture. i am loving this journey so far, my hair has thickened up so much. i have always had thick long hair.
@JourneywithTiffany

Hello Beauty!! You go girl!!! I wish I had started mine myself! I bet they look so good!! I have noticed a lot of traditional Locs & others interlocking more for stability. Makes sense. Thanks for sharing what’s in your daily spray as someone might want to try that! I heard lavender is good for sensitive scalps! Go Locs go!!!! Glad you are enjoying your beautiful journey! Thanks for watching 🖤

My hair was sooo thin before my microlocs because of braids, crochets and just combing through and shampooing my natural hair. My daughter's presented microlocs as a gift to me. It was so very welcomed at the time. I have not regretted my microlocs. I love them too. Thanks for your channel.

I wanted to add that you can start dreadlocks with your hair extensions and keep it that way until you have more length if you want. That's how I started my dreadlocks over 30 years ago. I started my dreadlocks after cutting all my hair off from damage perms all that stuff ( The Big Chop) went all natural in 1989-1990. I think started my dreadlocks when my hair was about 2 inches and I kept them in hair extensions until they're about six or 7 inches may be a little bit longer. And then I took the extensions off. They were very puffy for a little while, and they do shrink because your hair is Knotting up. I tell anybody if they ask me about my hair and want to start dreadlocks, but they have to be very patient about it and it's basically like lock your hair and forget about it. Don't touch it don't mess with it. Don't try to over stylet either. And I have to correct you on some thing about wetting your hair. Don't keep wetting your hair that's not what the way you moist in your hair. Dreadlocks can be very dry and just put a little bit of oil on them. Not everyday either. And don't wash it every day. You don't need to, unless you've been sweating a lot or something you're overworking your hair. DREADLOCKS ARE FREEDOM! And maybe wash it if it stinks if you've been in air pollution, a lot. Dreadlocks, are like a sponge, and they hold smells and water. Dreadlocks take way less maintenance than you're probably thinking they do. Basically zero maintenance, but when you do have to do your hair or wash it the longer it gets it's probably going take you 1/2 day to a day. I only roll my new growth like every six months, and sometimes longer. Your hair grows an inch a month some people are faster. My at this point are more free form. I only roll them to keep them separated. I also have really weird hair. It doesn't like to lock all the time with new growth. Not everyone has that problem. That is my hair. My hair is like that silky yarn that doesn't like to stay knotted. I have to leave it alone. I also wrap my dreadlocks, but I would not suggest everyone do that unless you know what you're doing. I do it to add color to my hair and to keep my dreadlocks separated and for some health reasons and to keep peoples hands off my hair. But you have to be careful what type of hair you wrap your hair with because of the weight of the hair that you're adding, because It can pull your dreadlocks out if it's too heavy. People have asked me about it and they don't seem to understand that it is my own hair and it is very long. They seem to think it's a hair extension and it's not. It's like if you took a shoelace and wrapped it around your finger and replace your finger with your dreadlock. I do this because I don't want to put chemicals or bleach on my dreadlocks because bleaching your dreadlocks will damage your hair also the $$$. I have done this years ago. Also coloring my dreadlocks when they were even shorter than they are now cost me about $500 just for the hair color and a friend did it. *Btw - this was over 10 years ago back in 2003. You have to buy A LOT and I MEAN A LOT of bottles of hair color because dreadlocks, are like a sponge. And when I went to the salon to ask them if they would do it, and how much they were going to charge me.....They wanted to charge me over $1000 Plus the cost of the hair color. I have to buy like 35 BOTTLES OF HAIR COLOR!!! MY HAIR NOW IS LIKE TWICE AS LONG NOW IF NOT LONGER. It's also didn't include the bleach. That's why I pretty much can guarantee you. That's why you only see people with the tips of their dreadlocks colored or sections of it colored.. So I learned how to color my hair without coloring it. it only cost me around $65 to $70. If you really wanted to, you could reuse it. It's really pretty, it's just time consuming. It takes me 45 minutes to do one dreadlock because of how long they are. I also do it by myself, if someone else did, it would be faster.

Hello there! Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah, I don’t do anything to my hair on an every day basis I do it as it’s needed. I do think that everybody’s hair and everybody’s journey is so different, so what works for one doesn’t work for others and vice versa. I think people must learn what works for their journey. These are just things I’ve experienced and has worked for me and that I would and wouldn’t do. Thanks so much for weighing in today and telling us all about your awesome journey to this point! I’ll be 2.5 years in my journey on July 26, 2023 with pencil sized traditional locs and I have some side notes to add: PRO: although this may be because of my hair texture and thickness, my hair NEVER smells sour or sweaty like it did when I was a loose natural or wore braids. CON: oil… oil… and did I mention oil. My hair has always held onto oil and would produce oil naturally. With most loc videos, people are always talking about adding oils to keep their locs moisturized. However, I’m learning that I may just need to spray my hair with water only for extra hydration. As a result, every hair scarf, loc sock, or satin pillowcase, is covered in oil stains from my hair. CON: my retwist only last a few days. After paying a nice price for a wash and retwist, my hair looks great for about 3-5 days, then it will start frizzing back up at the roots. PRO & CON: freshly washed and retwisted hair looks thinner, but the longer I wait between doing my hair, the thicker and longer it appears. Like you, I also keep blankets around my neck, however, I have never had a problem with lint. Since my hair has a tendency to grow outside of my locs, I get a lot of locs marrying or loose hairs giving me that “bug crawling on me” effect.
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany Год назад
Hellooooo Beauty!! Thanks so very much for sharing your pros and cons! I loved reading this! I agree with you, it takes a long time for my scalp to get the sweaty smell! Maybe it’s because our scalp can breath unlike before! I very rarely use oils and if I do it’s early enough to have soaked in. Yep just water and essential oils if you like that kind of thing! Honey that big effect is serious 😂😂 almost ripped one clean out my scalp before thinking it was a bug on me! 🤦🏾‍♀️😝😂 Thanks a mill for watching and sharing. 🖤

This has been VERY helpful, so much that I've watched your entire video so thanks for sharing! I've been relaxer free for almost a year and a half now. Just getting my hair pressed or getting feedin braids in between and I'm just tired of doing both..LOL! I'm ready for something with low maintenance. I'm ready to just get up and go without worrying about throwing a hat on my head. At 43, I'm just ready for a change so I'm watching videos on loc journeys and doing my research to ensure I'm ready to start my journey, which I believe that I am. For me, it's just coming to grips with being able to embrace my 4b-4c in its natural state. Laaawd...this brings me so much fear to my confidence..😂 But I work remotely so it may not be so bad..lol. It's so hard when you've been use to straight hair all of your life and never had to worry about frizzy edges or you've just been self-conscious about your roots..lol. But the more I see locs, the more I WANT them. But also like you said, I gotta be ready for the starter phase..lol. My hair is past my shoulder when pressed out but the shrinkage is real after a wash..lol. So my dilemma is first, finding my loctician (which I've narrowed down to 2 or 3). One only provides the coil method. The other two provide coil and two strand. One of the locticians stated that they suggest starting with coil on more kinky textures and two strand on longer hair. Which brings me to my second dilemma, trying to decide if I want to start off with coils or two strand twists. I know you'll get the same results in the end. I do know that I don't want my locs too thin but also, not really thick either. More medium, maybe pencil thick...just a small tad thicker than yours. So yeah, this has all been so nerve wrecking..lol. But again, appreciate the video...Very helpful!

Hey beauty heeeyy!!! Oh I’m so glad you found me as well! Listen…. I know what you are going through cause I was def a fish out of water when I started so that’s what made me start doing these videos for others starting out!!! I have a playlist of Loc videos so feel free to look through them! Make sure you know the difference in the Locs and locking method etc. I’m so glad you are doing your homework! The more educated you are on it all the better YOUR journey will go! You will have confidence in what you want and don’t want done. Good thing for you that you work from home!!! Now that’s a plus because you just have to manage when you step out inbetween which can be hats, headwraps in cute ways, it’s about to get cold so beanies and other things. Don’t worry about how it’s going to look at the beginning just think of how it will look in a year from now, two years and three! You are starting from a good length so you have that on your side. Check out my visual Loc album and watch how mine transformed from sparse chicken lmbo 😂 to a head full! Thanks so much for sharing with me your plans, feel free to check out other content and let me know if you have questions. Much luck on your journey to be! Keep doing homework and when you are sure of what you want and you’ve got just the right person go for it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting I appreciate it 🖤

Thank you for this. I'm relaxed and started growing my natural hair out back in April. Right now, it's a little past my neck when it's pressed. I was going to do like a co-worker and start it with micro braids but, this is another excellent option. I have a couple areas where it's broken, and you can see the difference in lengths so I may get extensions to make it even. BTW, you were wrong for the roaches on the screen! I had a huge water bug land on my monitor while I was on it a few weeks ago and it almost took me out!

Hello beauty! Awesome so glad you enjoyed it and possibly found another option! Also on length.. Loc’s also give you full control over the length of your loc’s by adding permanent extensions that are totally undetectable. Starting with 2 inches of hair you can have “Rapunzel” Loc’s to the floor if you desire! If you don’t have patience but you have money/ talent your imagination is the only limit! With practice you can easily repair any kind of problem that you can possibly have with your loc’s!🎉

I think its more for the man that they dont want them with long hair especially in the federal government. But ive never had an issue with braids, wigs, or now I have locs. They just want us females to keep it off the shoulders. And ive been in the military where I wore microbraids 90% of the time and now federal law enforcement no issues. I feel you on the people now wanting to copy you now they see them mature. 🙄 I was getting asked a lot if i have sisterlocs even though I have microlocs that was started with two strand twists. Im 9 months in and still not locked 🙃...so even if you think you got that 4C type hair it can take awhile for them to completely lock.

Law enforcement has come such a long way and I’m so happy about it. My law enforcement data were back in 2005 on fir 11 yrs. So it’s def changed by now. I can imagine bigger states and cities having better experiences. Girl that repeat with those around you once you get them is real 😂. You are so right about texture you really can’t assume because I’m 4 in and still struggling with some Locs 🤦🏾‍♀️. Thanks for etching Beauty and for commenting 🖤

I'm kind of nervous to get them, because the initial install sometimes looks painful & the maintenance.
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany 11 месяцев назад
Hey Beauty! My install wasn’t painful AT ALL! That’s saying a lot because I’m tender headed! My lady was very gentle and I even ended up complimenting her on her gentle nature! So you just have to find someone who will be gentle. The maintenance is very little at first sis because it needs to be dry outside of water or rose water! So very low maintenance at first as you are doing very little manipulation to it. You have to just make up In your mind what would make you do it, and when said thing presents itself go for it!!! You got this! Thanks for watching 🖤

Have a start date for establishment soon. My hair is short. Can i do lot of protective styles for 1st 2years while grow?😊
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany 8 месяцев назад
Hello Beauty! 😊 So the short answer to that is yes you CAN do protective styles over them. Is it recommended it’s NOT! Doing those over your new babies will run you the risk of them not developing the way you need them to, possible extra breakage and thinning, and you being unsatisfied and possibly not wanting them. Now everyone’s hair is different and can take different levels of stress and I am not a beautician so I can only speak from the stance of my journey versus my friends, but from everything I’ve seen of those close to me who have utilized braids, wigs, extensions, crochets etc. to weather through the uncomfortable and awkward stage, Our journeys ended up very differently and I still have mine and they don’t because of not being happy with them. I think once they mature a little bit a wig over a protective cap every now and then isn’t horrible. I just personally didn’t want to do anything to compromise my expensive investment. I know, I know it’s such a uncomfortable stage and quite frankly a look to get used to, but I promise you, you get used to it. Here’s the thing…. it’s about to get cold and may be already cold wherever you are. When I started, I wore a lot of scarves and went on a scarf buying frenzy, and was watching how to tie my scarves in different ways like a mad woman! But it worked! So I wore hats and scarves all winter long while I took hair growth vitamins until summer and by then I had a little hang time and was able to do a style or two that made me feel comfortable enough to wear them out. I utilized headbands and scarves after that until they got long enough. There’s ways around that awkward, beginning stage without compromising your new babies. I hope this helped. Will definitely do a video on it soon. Congrats on your journey to be, and I know you’re going to kill this!💪🏾 thanks for watching🖤

How is the frizz with sister lock ? I have regular locs and the frizz was major.
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany 9 месяцев назад
Hello there and good question. Speaking from my own perspective it’s not much!! The only time I notice any frizzing or puffing is at the roots when it’s past time for a retie. Otherwise the length of the lock not so much at all. Every now and then I’ll catch a lose strand and will wrap it along my Loc but not hardly. I do use silk pillowcases etc so I’m sure if I didn’t there might be more. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching 🖤

Hi beautiful! What is the difference between microlocs and sisterlocs?
@JourneywithTiffany
@JourneywithTiffany 10 месяцев назад
Hello Beauty!! I’m not to sure but…. I think the biggest difference is that micro Locs are obviously way smaller in nature than Sisterlocks. I also “think” micro Locs can be started and maintained in different ways versus Sisterlocks are one way only with starting and maintaining. Sisterlocks can also be thicker in nature as mine are and still be Sisterlocks. Now don’t quote me on this as this is just me researching and regurgitating since I don’t have micro Locs and know very little about them. I think they are both so cute and you WIN no matter what kind of Loc route you choose! Thanks so much for watching 🖤
