I never used to run sponge filters but since building a fish room I have completely changed over out of necessity. With an inverter and a car battery I can keep the fish room running for days if the power goes out!

Good tip on putting sponges in the box filter. I chose sponges for my fish room.

I like the Easy Flow Sponge Filters with the uplift tubes from Aquarium Co Op, but even when I try to bag the filters to remove them for cleaning and maintenance it makes a huge mess all over the tank.

I love the bubbles and the bubble noise . My main pro to going with a sponge filter is bc of the many power outages we experience here in Houston.

Great video absolutely right about the aquarium co-op sponge filters I run them in all my tanks as well. Also so glad they came out with the uplift kit and put that on all of them as well. For my money they are absolutely the best sponge filters on the market.

Going away from Sponge filters, have numerous coop ones, but an addition hang on back with just filter floss does a much better job of cleaning the water in my opinion.

I use the hygger dual sponge filter, but I definitely wish the sponges were more coarse like the aquarium co op one!

I mean if you are going to run a sponge filter, why not just get an internal filter. You can get a mechanical + bio, with surface agitation and best thing is you don't have to deal with that air bubble noise + air pump noise.
@robertjohnston25

Internals cost more up front and usually to run too, also the sponge filter does both mechanical and bio as well and generally safer for young fish. A great thing for them to graze on too. I’ve never owned an internal canister filter to be fair, but I also can’t see myself spending the money on one without the itch to just get a hob for the same price and 3x the capacity, while also being outside the tank.

I started with a great internal canister filter.. after a while, I even added a second for more water flow and more filtration. I switched to a sponge and it’s been doing a much better job than both canister filters were doing. I like the sponge.

Too fix the gurgling on regular sponge filters, use the LRB yogurt cup lid method. Works a charm 👌

Will a bigger spong make more noise?
@SteenfottAquatics
@SteenfottAquatics 5 месяцев назад
Not really, the noise comes from how much air is being pushed through.

How often do you clean them? Just rinse in water I'm guessing
@michaelboulos3272
@michaelboulos3272 5 месяцев назад
NO! Squeeze the sponge in some dechlorinated water and never rinse in regular chlorinated water bc it will kill all the beneficial bacteria on the sponge
@SteenfottAquatics
@SteenfottAquatics 5 месяцев назад
How often depends on how many fish you have. The more you have the more often you'll have to clean it. In a lightly stocked tank you could go months without having to clean it.

@@michaelboulos3272 what about well water? I do have a water softener with a brine tank. Should i be concerned about the salt content of my tap water?
