In Eric's game against Bellin, the computer finds an interesting piece sacrifice as a defense. After 1. e5 dxe5 (instead of cxd4) 2. Qf3 Nc6! 3. Qxc6+ Bd7 wins a tempo and after 4. Qf3 cxd4. You get two pawns, one of them a protected passer on d4, white on the other hand is lacking space. Black has to prove something, but is far from lost.

I did not understand why at 11:41 after 1. e5 dxe5 (instead of cxd4) 2. Qf3 e4 (hope I've understood the notation there). If white's knight takes it, then could black's bishop not just go to b7? I assume that is silly but not clear why.

Last game. Eric did not say the reason why Bg3 doesn't work. White simply plays Nd4. Position equal. Thus, Bb5 played to take away d4 square for the knight by forcing c4

@@jeeum A bit late but... it’s because Qf4 prevents Bg3 (the queen will just take and defend f2) and Bg1 will allow the knight to take it (and then the queen will be defending f2 again).

After Queen A8 at 13:32, why isn't Black's most obvious move Bishop B7? Sure, losing both a rook and a bishop for a queen isn't optimal, but at least it definitely gets the Queen without delay. Does it set back Black's tempo too much? Edit: Never mind, Queen has A7, and from there there is no way to hold her anymore. Black can force a trade of Queens instead, but I guess that's bad too because Black is already behind in pieces.

In the final game, Eric wasn’t able to distinguish the difference between playing Bg3 directly from Bb5. Note that Ba4 was accessible in both scenario. He also miss to point out the resource Be3 when black finally played Bg3 where Nxe3 check runs into Ke2 and Ne3/Bg3 is hanging. Probably still winning for black, but it is always important to dissect critical lines. Anyway, still cool commentaries by IM eric.

13:00 Is Nc6 - a knight sacrifice to save the rook - worth considering? After Qxc6+ Bd7 with tempo on the queen, there is really nothing else for the white queen to do as the rook is now defended by the black queen. I can't see anything terribly wrong with it, losing just a minor piece, black could still hope for some comeback. Any thoughts?

Losing a piece without any compensation against an IM equals game over. You'll also have a disgusting position that you won't enjoy playing. Hoping to comeback isn't really going to work. But I guess I would play a few more moves to see what I can do, and then resign probably. Immediately resigning is also fine here.

At 41:00 d4 for black does not lose the bishop for free, just gives the pawn back. Probably much inferior to Nh6, but not a losing move.

Kxe1 is not forced. Stockfish recommends Be3 Qxe3 Qxe3 to stop mate after Be1.

Perhaps because the knight can still grab the pawn in the center. If black knight takes back, white rook takes and white is still up a piece.

I love playing 1.c4 against people in 1400-1600 (I'm 1550ish) because people usually don't know how to respond, and then I get to play d4 at some point and get a superior QGD set up as opposed to playing 1.d4 first where they would most likely follow a typical mainline.

Mr. Rosen , early in the last game featured , you state whites best piece is the white bishop, because all of his pawns are on dark squares. Can you please explain ? I'm relatively new to chess about 1300 . The way I think is , the white bishop can't defend any of those dark square pawns making it weak and you say it's the best piece. Please explain . With the pawns on dark squares, the bishop is able to move across the board freely, if the pawns were on the same colored squares as the bishop then the bishop wouldn't have anywhere to go as the pawns are occupying the same squares the bishop can go to, thus making the bishop weak.

That's what I thought too, however the response d5 might be hard to meet, as e6 is the only square the queen has to do both jobs

Queen takes d5 is a blunder because when black checks the king with the queen he wins the whites queen if white brings bishop to d2 , Black takes on f2 with check and wins the Queen and if white queen tries to go to d2 , black goes bishop to b4

I beat now GM and blitz superstar Andrew Tang in a slow tournament game in 2012. He was rated 2200 and I was 1850. He didn't take me seriously until he dropped an exchange and then started slow thinking but I was able to convert it. I think in the same tournament I also beat 2300 former state champ Leonard Johnson because he was so disgusted he dropped a pawn in the opening he resigned on move 10. He dropped the pawn because I played Bf5 with a pawn on g6 and Rg8 to the open g-file after a trade there. He was so focused on my kingside potential attack he missed a simple double attack against a pawn hanging on his queenside. I had many good results against experts and masters back then just playing without any fear of their rating.

In slow games, at the titled level, yes these games are completely over. For lower levels or faster time formats, you can still swindle your opponent.

The first game, you lost the game as opposed to the opponent winning it, when he has only moves his pieces to their starting squares... moved each piece only once and 2 of their pawns twice
