Fee challenged the prosecution's portrayal of Menendez as "Scrooge McDuck swimming in gold coins," arguing that the evidence linking bribes to official acts was speculative. He emphasized that the valuables found in Menendez's home were not necessarily bribes, suggesting they belonged to Menendez's wife, who he claimed received gifts due to financial struggles. The trial, now in its ninth week, also involves businessmen accused of conspiracy.
