My Prosthetic Guy is very quiet (I absolutely respect him) - but, he was a beast when he gave me a wearing schedule. Very much in line with what you stated in this video. -- you do exactly what’s on this hand out, no more no less. Good day - bad day - everyday will teach you and your brain. You’ll learn what you need too, to decide what your future will be. RBK - trauma @ 60 years old, coming up on 73, full time user. Fuss and worry over my good leg more than my amputated leg. I’m doing great.

We are happy to be a resource to you! Asking local health professionals, such as following up with the doctor and physical therapist, can also provide guidance for limb care.

I like how you stress taking care of the non-amputated limb.

1. Should the patient keep the shrinker on at all times outside of wearing the prosthetic? (Including bed time?). Or should a shrinker also have a don/doff schedule as well? (Some people also use a liner as a shrinker). 2. Should a patient initially avoid wearing a shrinker upon initial post op until staples are removed? Thanks in advance.

You definitely want to take care of your leg as prosthetic limbs can cause significant discomfort. There is not necessarily a best prosthetic that can be suggested. It sounds like there may be a problem with the socket, where the prosthetic leg contacts your leg.

How long can I safely keep my prosthetic on? I just got over a pressure sore and am worried. I wear a shrinker and socks on my residual BK limb. My stump shrunk alot..2.5" so my new leg and foot are ready now. Getting some irritation on my knee...

Thanks for reaching out. Length of time is the question that everybody asks, but unfortunately as you have probably found there isn't a clear answer. This is because it is different for everyone. We have seen people get blisters in under 10 minutes of wear and then progress to more than 12 hours a day of wear time. It ultimately comes down to the health of your skin, a good prosthetic fit utilizing socks effectively, a progressive wear schedule like talked about in the video, and a diligent effort to check your skin throughout the day. A prosthetist and a physical therapist with experience working with amputees should be able to assist you in this process. That being said, you can start addressing things with the tips in our prosthetic training series.

Why does my tibia hurt so bad right at the top of the bevel? I want throw my POS foot in the F’ing garbage. I am 9 weeks postop, and I can wear my foot all day as long as I don’t walk very far. If I walk half a block or down stairs or down a hill it hurts super bad. My socket is too big and my foot is a POS. I could not keep up with the grandmas power walking in the mall. I am a active 37 y/o dude. I am using sleeve suction and have a Ottobock Triton 1C61.

It is difficult to say without performance of a proper evaluation. We recommend seeing a local physical therapist in the area to evaluate potential causes of pain.

Did you ever figure it out? I'm 3 weeks postop and am having major nerve pain I'm my residual limb. I'm nervous about the future and how ill do. Thanks in advance Mark.

@@jaredcorley3481 sorry to hear you had to have an amputation. Yeah I am doing a lot better. I am about a year postop now. I’m not gonna lie, the first year is fucking rough. I ended up getting a revision because my doctor did a crappy job beveling my tibia and left my fibula an inch longer than my tibia. Anyways yeah I am doing better. I am in the process of trialing different feet. I am going to exchange my Ottobock Triton for an Ottobock Challenger. Hopefully that foot will have better energy return so I can walk faster and maybe even run. As far as uneven surfaces go prosthetics suck and we just have to deal with it. There are a few feet that have some ankle movement but nothing that comes close to a real ankle. The nerve pain will get better. Mine was super bad too. It use to keep me awake at night. Once you get to about 3 to 6 month postop it will die down quite a bit. Hang in there buddy, it will get better. Honestly I did a terrible job dealing with it. I even considered suicide for awhile. I am so glad I never acted on it. There are so many layers to amputation that people don’t understand. It can really mess with you not just physically, but also mentally, socially and spiritually. I post a lot of questions on Reddit r/amputee group. Let me know if I can help you in anyway. I am happy to answer any questions.

Where can my patient buy the carbon plate insert?

For proper application, we would recommend consulting with a prosthetist or orthotist depending on the application. An evaluation for selecting a product is crucial to success.
