It is not good to cover paintings with plastic for long storage.. It blocks air circulation which is essential to preventing mold and fungi growth. Best to cover paintings with a cotton fabric.

i've come to the conclusion that cat hair will just have to be an addition to the paintings. when they find our work in a few hundred years they will know us as the artists who had cats living in our flats...lmao.

Thank you Florent for the information. One question though. When waiting several months for a painting to dry before applying varnish, where do you store it? I am worried that if I keep my paintings on the wall, they will collect lots of dust during that time. Is it OK to fully wrap them with paper or something when they're touch dry?

Just the info I was looking for! Not a painter (don't have the talent in that respect) but writing a story about a painter and wondered (writing sparks my curiosity and makes me think about such things the way painting sparks my painter's) how he'd keep a work in progress from gathering dust. Your tip about putting it against the wall or easel seems a good solution that I can have him use. Along with the others, of course. Except the last because the story's set in a time before plastic. But he too has a cat. A long-haired one! Yeah, that house paint brush sounds like a good suggestion too.

I'm new so my first few paintings will be on oil paper or unmounted linen, then I'll be painting on panels. My plan is to make my own wet panel carriers out of foam core, and leave them in the carrier to dry. I'm hoping this will work.

My first attempt at using the classical approach to glazing was a disaster. No matter how much I tried to protect it; it needed grooming😜

Yeah I’ve scrapped two decent starts due to hair lint and dust. I forget to wipe off the pallet is all! Oh! I ordered 15 low wide 20 ml glas jars with supposedly airtight screw on lids. I’m going to get a good thicker glass palette and glue these on the outer edges and put some oil paint colors in each so I always have my colors available easily but can stay wet. Less waste!!! Just take some for a project and when done if there is left over you know put back in unpolluted. Sometimes I end up not using a certain color I thought I might. I tried putting back in tube. I failed. I’m all about mixing colors these days ....especially darks... also my brushes in a sealed box with that oil to keep dust out. Just take the brush I want and clean off. Found a paper towel that says virtually lint free..... the getting a little hair or two in the paint on the canvas is the one thing that drives me mad! Push it around to get it off and destroying a perfect edge with perfect contrast ( I get an inch area of that phenomenon sometimes!) what do you think of my little glass jars? The thicker glass so I. An easy safe wash with those jars stuck on. (Jewelry glue). I have a thin plate used for framing and it’s Scarey to wash sometimes. Windex window cleaner works along with the razor blades. I was using solvent. My Medium idea was a disaster for wet on wet and glossy ness! It dried as I painted almost! And was very Matt. What the hell??? So now I have stand oil and Venice turpentine that will last forever....almost makes it like a cheap acrylic I swear! Well the stand oil I use still but very little and mainly just oil....looking forward to the oil painting spring edition. The non toxic part. And I did paint a no portrait. A donkey in the snow with a baby sheep. Ha ha. And I’m practicing on my kids now instead of just Rory my muse. Not loving charcoal....I think it might be a sit down kind of project....and don’t blow the dust off....spit will ruin a part! Did Angelo stand for drawing?

I realize you deal mostly in oil painting information. However, do you have any cleaning technique information for acrylic paintings? My son has some acrylic oil paintings he did about 2 or 3 yrs ago that is pretty dusty. It never dawned on me to cover them up or put them away. However, now I would like to varnish them to better protect them. What should I do? Thanks for considering my questions.

good video, like all of them! My problem is not the initial keeping dog hair and dust off, but the longer time to keep it off after applying final paint and/or varnish. How long must varnish remain dust free and not covered, before you can cover with plastic or a drop cloth etc... new to oils, so I am just getting ready to varnish my first two paintings, and I have no idea of time line. thanks!

Do you have a recommendation on how to achieve a matte finish on oil paintings? I use Acrylic base and Oil for added effects on top layer. I can't seem to find a matte finish meant to be used with acrlyic/oil paintings.

How long does the retouching varnish protect your painting and can I put it on an antique picture to preserve it until I figure out how to preserve it?

Thank you for the info. But I still have a question. How do I protect my painting while it’s still wet and have not finished painting it?. Those pet hairs will get on it and stick to it. I can’t stop the dog from shaking himself and spreading all that hair, plus the dust that easily accumulates with open windows. Help?

I painted mine yesterday, and today there is dust stuck on the still wet surface...should i try to remove it now or wait for it to dry and try to dust off with brush? Or will the dust stick to the painitng? :/
