Mark, WA7KBY, wants to know to mute his SDR while he transmits with another antenna or if he even needs to?

Seems like that device is for the radio and SDR using the same antenna. He asked about an SDR using a different antenna. Am I missing something?

To use the device with a separate receive antenna, connect the transceiver directly to the transmit antenna. Connect the receive antenna, the PTT control line from the transceiver and the SDR to the switching device. The XCVR/Radio connector on the switching device is left unconnected.

I have had two of those boxes The MFJ 1708_SDR and both have failed, this last one burned up! waiting to send it back for the third one. It does work but is not reliable.

Hi David. General question. I am finding Coaxial cables are not what they used to be. For example they used to be copper wires. Now I am finding that they are copper plated steel wires. Had several failures of RG58 and others. Use magnet to test them. Also makes a big difference when making coax traps etc. I am in the UK what are cables like in your country. Cheers from old George

Good video, I've had to stumble around this earlier this year when I got my RSPDX. I'm not a huge fan of the MFJ-1708, there is a noticable delay on the relay when tx-ing. I still use it on my rx mag loop, and just simply didnt connect the coax from1708 to my radio so it would still flip the relay when I tx, and the rig doesn't need that antenna. For my other channel on the SDR, I've used a ZSC-2-2+ to have my 7610 output my rx signal on whichever ant I'm using to the ZSC-2-2 to split the signal, then put it back into the radio and rx it on the SDR. The 7610 also cuts the rx channel when tx-ing, so no harm to the SDR. However, the ZSC-2-2+ expectedily reduces your rx signal.

I have an rsp1a and use the mfj1708bsdr - it works well in my experience

I've seen my MFJ-259B antenna analyzer show a signal on my IC-7300 waterfall even though it has no connection with the 7300 or its antenna.

I don't know if this would work for me. I run unitrunker and dsd with two dongles. It's in a ruggedized case (knockoff pelican) running on a windows mini pc powered by a 30ah lifepo4 12v battery through a 5v buck converter. It'll run well over 48 hours non stop. Originally I wanted to put it in my work truck. When I transmit on the commercial vhf nxdn radio in the truck, it knocks the dongles offline. Even with the mag mount antenna disconnected from the bnc connector on the case. It sucks. I use it at home and after some initial bugs that I worked out, it has been very stable. But it does not fulfil what I designed it for, a mobile transportable headless trunking p25 scanner. I still had fun building it.

I use an RTL SDR as a pan adapter for my FT-857D via a (PAT70M) Board. How can I stop RF getting into the RTL SDR when transmitting as it knocks the SDR out? There is already RFI/EMI clip on ferites on all of my equipment as well as 1:1 ferite wound common mode chokes inline with the antenna.

if the buffer/amp is picking up the signal from the right place, the radios PTT will disconnect the rx from the tx properly and you still get the radios preselection poroperties

I would just turn off the SDR before transmitting on my main rig. After all, you cannot use two receivers at one time, can you ? I have one of the cheaper SDR's because I didn't want to waste money in case I didn't like it. If I wanted to check my TX signal, I would just listen to my National HRO-5, then cut off the B+ when finished. If the SDR was off when you transmitted, it wouldn't be damaged by your 100W signal (unless you had my Drake L-4B and the awesome power it puts out if I drive it with 120W). All my antennas are up 70' at the ends, and round 66' at the feedpoint. The SDR antenna is up there with the rest, but 45° off from the dipoles so it doesn't interact with them too much. The SDR antenna is a 200' long, sort of random length off center fed dipole with no value. I sit on the top of a 550' hill, so my signal "rolls off" bringing the angle of attack down to between 10 to 15° to the horizon as best as I can figure. That happens to make my 80W signal almost 5/9 anywhere I talk to. I still want to disable my SDR so as to not damage it with the intense signal if I forget and turn on my L-4B in a hurry. MFJ stuff does work, but I do not trust such an "attenuation" even if it does ground the SDR input. Also, I do not trust myself to remember to use the MFJ box when I hear really rare DX. There used to be an ICOM 6 meter transceiver that I am still looking for from the 70's (SSB&AM) with its own telescoping rod antenna, not a handheld, but a battery cased CB radio sized transceiver with Mic and shoulder strap. I saw one being used from a hilltop near Rochester,NY quite successfully, probably during a band opening, but great signal reports given and taken with that little rig. I would love find one! 73's ALL de W4FJF.

I like the sdrplay radio. Sadly the Linux drivers are pretty sad, gave mine away

How so, most of the 1940's etc radios had seperate TX RX units
