Join us as we confront the alarming rise of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria, affecting millions of young girls. With regional variations and dire health implications, the time for action is now.
A report by UNICEF has revealed an alarming increase in female genital mutilation among Nigerian girls aged 0-14, with an estimated 19.9 million survivors of FGM, meaning Nigeria has the third highest rate globally. In the country, there are disparities in the practice across states. The rate of prevalence ranges from 62% in Imo to less than 1% in Adamawa and Gombe. It is highest in the southeastern part of Nigeria (35%), followed by the southwest (30%), and lowest in the northeast (at 6%).
Journalist and gender advocate Melony Ishola joins the conversation to shed light on the importance of survivor-led movements. Don't miss this crucial discussion!
