Sheep need protection from predators like coyotes, wolves and bears. Sheep farmers use a variety of methods to do this, including employing livestock guardian dogs. Learn more about these special dogs in this video.
Traditionally the shepherd's didn't used to feed LGDs a lot of high quality feed. They used to eat what their owners used to eat, stuff like bread, meat, milk and milk products. Shorter lifespan and health issues like hip dysplasia that trouble livestock guardian dogs are mainly caused by high protein dog food.
My sheep produce a lot of compost which produces a lot of squash. Dogs love cooked squash so it's a great system for me. But, yeah, that's a lot of food.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
We have a great pyr and he is awesome. He has gone through 2 obedience classes and passed with flying colors. We adopted him from a shelter at 10 weeks. He is just a house pet but so awesome and happy- loves kids and people. At night he watches out the patio doors as he is protecting his “herd”. Thinking about enrolling him into good citizen training so he can visit nursing homes and hospitals. Rocky is now 3 1/2 - so spoiled- 90lbs of lap dog
Pryanees are smart. I always said they were smart enough to cheat most people at cards and the only reason they didn't take over the world was the lack of opposable thumbs. That said, pyrs learn very quickly but quickly get bored with commands they don't see a point to. A frequent comment on the GP Mail List was, "Welcome to the wonderful world of pyrs and their painted-on ears!"
Great Pyrenees dont mess around when they're protecting the herd or family, They seem docile and lazy at first glance but, when they know their pack is in danger, They're practically impossible to beat.
Giuseppe Pierfelice Actually,.. Since you didn't understand what was SAID, in the video. This may clear your misunderstanding. Note the video style and music similarity. And even the Barks lol. ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dvOHVfWAbpc.html ...
I have 2. They a pain in ass coup inside.so outside is there life. I can tell if someone around and bad vibes. They have low barks for warning and high barks for other reasons. There loyal and loving to us. The female is jealous of any female that's around 😂
We have a four year old female and she protects ourselves and the cats and our little dog. Those deer will never catch us by surprise. Our Molly is the most beautiful dog ever.
Just love this breed and have a 16month old male who has shown strong signs not only for looking after stock but also native animals and birds. The bark is enough to scare most people which enhances his guard dog attributes. Not enough has been said about the love this dog shows toward his owners. Alll in all an amazing breed.
Touch wood, we have not lost one chicken or critter since we got our LGD. Adding goats onto the farm for her to watch over too. These dogs are worth their weight in gold! The coyotes have decided to do their grocery shopping elsewhere.
Me, too. I love, "staff." I heard a guy say that when the live stock come in at the end of the day he counts the dogs, not the live stock. Cuz he know if there is a missing sheep there will be a missing dog.
You guys live the dream of my life. ✨ Those dogs are so impressive. It baffles me how they evolved to real-life SUPERHEROS to your life stock. Literally so fricking interesting! Much love from germany ❤️
If you think about it, this is exactly what humans and dogs have evolved to do. A dog like this shouldn’t be kept in an apartment or for show, their genes are literally programmed for protecting the herd. Those dogs have more sense of purpose in life than I do lol. Beautiful animals.
Good for you!! Its too bad more farmers did not have your attitude. So many set up farms in the wilderness and then just want to shoot any predators that come around and this is very wrong. You are doing a great thing by having livestock guardian dogs. You are saving the wildlife and your sheep. Great thing to do!!!
you can collect 50 percent of the coyote population yearly in an environment that is the least favorable to them. 75% in a favorable enviroment. Coyotes are simply pest that outbreed and destroy wildlife diversity
A few months ago we adopted a Great Pyrenees what a blessing to our family he's getting used to being awake in the day and sleeping with us during the night so we thought maybe he isn't he wanders back and forth around up inside the house is not an outside dog he just happened to be a wonderful dog gets along with half the cats not all of them but if it was his choice he would get along with all of them very protective of our family and we're very grateful that he's come to be part of our family God bless him God bless his breed and please pay attention to what kind of dog you really want investigate the dog breed before taking them home so they won't end up in the shelters God Bless America
The sheep are safe and happy, you are safe and happy, and your dogs are doing what they love best. They want to work, it's like they eed a purpose. Amazing big white balls of fluff.
@@charlottemajewski5992 Has he ever met the guys on the truck? When I was a kid we had a little Heinz 57 mutt, he was the best, and he loved the garbage men and the mail men.
My Pyrenees does a circuit of our fence line every time she goes out into our double fenced acre and a quarter. She is normally a docile and friendly dog but when a coyote threatens her flock (four small dogs) she turns ferocious, snarling and barking...
Thanks for sharing. Can I ask what these livestock guardian dog breed is please. They look like a great pyrenees, but I guess they could be maremmas or something else altogether. Thanks.
Fifteen !!! That's a lot of big tummy's to fill. They are OK with Ontario winters ? I know there is a big difference between northern and southern Ontario but it's still cold there in winter. Like up state NY.
of course, theyre from the snowy pyrenees mountains! :) [i have a great pyrenees so i know a lot about em, not really about many other breeds though lol]
I actually witnessed my Pyrs take on a cougar that jumped my pasture fence after my sheep. I had 8 pyrs at that time. 2 of them were young juveniles. Both of the juveniles split off the "pack", and pushed the sheep up against the fence and held them there. The adult Pyrs (6 of them) attacked the cougar. I was on the deck watching all of this. The cougar was taken down by the Pyrs. He jumped up and jumped the fence and disappeared into the woods. Im in a dead run to the dogs to check for injuries. I found blood on 2 of them. It was not theirs. If you decide a Pyr is for you, do your homework on the breed first. And plan on getting more than one. Some situations require backup!
I saw a short haired Pyrenees when I visited family I’m OK. It looked like a giant lab and they said it was a pure breed Pyrenees, beautiful dog. Is there such thing as a short haired Great Pyrenees?
In your future productions, never make the music louder than the narration, even between voice segments. Doing so forces the viewer to turn the volume up and down every few seconds which is irritating.
Me and my husband own a great pyrenees we went for a walk at big bear... California with our kids ..we saw a coyote far away and our dog chase the coyote ..running full speed after him.... the coyote never got near us.. but yet he did stare at us for 2 minutes far away .. our dog went after him full speed.. my husband had to go after our dog and we yell and scream .. to our dog .. until my husband idk.. he got him and told him let him go.. they are very protective ... verry intelligent im currently pregnant... and always sniffs my stomach 😘 but he needs proper train ..he takes my lil one 2 year old snacks away from hes hand he greets him with licks on hes face and arms ...🥰❤ ... sooo yeahh ... and he plays with my 9 year old son like they are best friends .. ☺ hes attach to my husband cries when he hasn't been home early from work .. lol 😆 soo my husband says... you know .. you have to train him ... not to do that .... soo I guess I'm just lazy to insist and insist to not take hes snacks away from him 😉😊
my grandfathers' farm in the Caucuses has about 10-12 dogs (of various ages) and about 1,000 sheep. they have wolf packs there and they are alone with sheep for days at a time. I've never seen solo dogs with sheep, no matter how few... not sure if this changes if you have coyotes, since they are considerably smaller and a true sheep dog like the Pyrenees or Caucasian shepherd can easily take a few by itself...
Michelle Dean It depends on the NUMBER of Predators,.. As much as the number of livestock. Coyotes may be small. But DO Often travel in numbers like Wolves. And are Very Oprotunistic like wolves. So while one dog is doing his thing. It's always best to have others watching the back door so to speak. The more doors, the more Dogs... Simple as I can put it ☺
I have seen a coyote pack split up. Half of them lead the dog away. While the single dog is preoccupied with these escaping coyotes. The other half of the coyote pack kills off the unprotected flock. Get them some backup. Go to the Great pyrenees club of america website for a place to start your research.
Should be fine this vid gives little more detail not every dog you want to be a big massive dog some you want slimmer more athletic like the kuvas and Anatolian Shepard. While your big dogs like your kangal , Caucasian mountain dog or Spanish mastiff will be your muscle and size probably your alpha of the pack too
pastor del caucaso, mastìn del pirineo que no el montaña del pirineo que es otra raza y mastìn español de abelgas, de picuxiana y otras lineas parejas a estas de esta raza
that's how you do it. I think that what you are prob doing s scaring coyotes, and saving the sheep, instead of mindlessly killing a beautiful animal. see-if you have flocks of sheep etc, you have right to protect them. I don t like when however, hunters kill coyotes wolves, just cause....I also feel that coyotes wolves are imp part of ecosystem. good work.
Nos, szóval megnéztem újból a videó elejét. Most úgy tűnik a kutyáknak egyenes a szőre. A kuvasz léte maga a történelem.
The guarding is instinctive due to genetics. Improved with age and experience. A new puppy is normally trained by the adults. Sit, come, down....thats your job. :)
hmmm, the lady said theyre great pyrenees and i just looked kuvasz up on google and although they look almost identical, it said theyre different dogs (i have a great pyrenees) theyre from the Pyrenees mountains which acts as a border for france and spain
@@zairetuck3341 I have raised pyrs since 1986. These dogs are Pyrs. How to tell the difference? Pyrs have a slightly wavy outer coat when held to the light. Kuvas have a very wavy coat. Pyrs have double dewclaws on the rear feet. Kuvas do not. Both are good livestock guardians. Pyrs are bigger and have a broader muzzle, especially when comparing males to males, or females to females.
Hawks swoop down to grab a chicken with their talons and carry it away to kill and eat our chickens often. How do I train my LGD and my border collie to prevent the hawks? My dogs need to be trained to _________________?
if you have an actual LGD you do not need to train him. problem is that during the day LGD are often low energy / sleeping , so you might need a smaller breed to see the threat for him and work as an alarm.
kareem Ahmed these dogs are awesome...very strong and athletic ,whole front section of the dog is solid muscle. ( ours is anyway) someone near by great pyrenees killed two coyotes. ours kept a bear from coming close to his heard . by barking and running toward the bear but never engaging. went on for three hours! till the bear decided his alpaca meal wasn't worth the fight and moved on .
This is just my opinion,i come from Albania and in the mountains we own herds of cows, goats and sheep.Coyotes is nothing compared to bears, wolves, eagles(which attack lambs). We use the Caucasian shepherd and we only have one per 30-50 sheep. The dogs you own are practicly soft versions of Caucasian shepherds, and our herd/guard dogs , sleep eat and live with our sheep all times. So I kinda think its not that bad to be employin 15 dogs against coyotes.
ToxicStormGaming Oh,.. We are Only Soft to look at. And our lines go back some 10,000 years. And though we are called Pyrenean Mountain dogs in Europe. We are a Primary use for getting rid of Bears there. The reason for High Numbers of Pyrenees in the situation of this video. Is because Coyotes can be in Large Numbers. And are Very Oprotunistic animals. So we have Many Corners to cover ☺☺☺. But there are videos here of us with coyotes, bears, and Bull Moose. We get around lol...
Summer Carmen ??? Pre-Menstrual Dogs ??? They could be unpredictable lol. (not sure your meaning PMD's) But LGD's aren't Killers. And should avoid physical confrontations that could hurt them,.. And their ability to protect. They are meant to Warn, Torment, and give predators the same decisions. Avoid excessive energy expense, and possibly injury. Which would limit Their abilities to hunt further and survive. Float like a Butterfly. But don't get Stung by Me hehe ☺
Wes Lerat Not sure who your comment is aimed at... But everyone talks up their favored breed. Kinda how we are. I just know we Look Better than the others lol. Bonus ☺
just a foot note on maremma's. They will guard THEIR flock with their lives, but, what breeders won't tell you is that they will kill your neighbours sheep. It doesn't matter how well you feed 'em,they will still attack your neighbours sheep. I have personally known people this has happened to. I live in a dingo area & it's a constant battle to keep sheep alive. A vet once stated to guard the flock use something that DOESN'T eat meat. If you live next to a maremma you'll understand that vet's meaning.
This is the true form/work of a flock guarding dog--to intimidate and scare off hungry animals with their loud bark, size, and numbers. People think that these dogs are bred to take on and battle other animals, but a combat dog like an American Pitbull and a flock guardian are two completely different things. One thing people need to understand is that dogs like these are guard dogs and not warriors for combat. People think that just because they see sort videos of these dogs either chasing or attack attacking a smaller wolf that is not even really fighting back and doesn't show the entire thing from beginning to end means they are the greatest, strongest, and toughest breed. That is not true. There's a reason kangals are not used to take on larger animals like bulls or bears and are not popular or widely known for the sport of dog combat unable to battle as long or as intensely as American Pitbulls can. I have seen video of American Pitbulls beating kangals and even making them run away. Never underestimate a dog that was bred to take on bulls, bears, and wild boar like the American Pitbull is. To see what American Pitbulls can do, watch a video called *Pit Bull Vs Bull in Maxela* where an American Pitbull takes on a bull by itself. For more info on the American Pitbull breed that even talks about how they were used to take on lions, watch a video interview with a well-know expert called *ALL ABOUT THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER WITH RICHARD F. STRATTON*
Literally everything you said was wrong. Livestock Guardians are fierce fighters and would pick a pitbull up by the throat and throw it. They fight wolves and bears in mountains. They're muscular physique and large canines aren't for show my dude.
Pitbull fans are the fucking worst. They aren't even the best fighting dogs! German shepards reguarly shit stomp them. A pitbull wouldn't even phase a male adult Kangal
Guy Says seriously?? This is a video about LGD'S not about how wonderful an American Pitbull is. I usually don't comment negatively but right now I'm having a hard time swallowing your comment since my 6 yr. daughter's 6 yr old best friend is in the hospital for being mauled by the neighbors sweet, little, misunderstood Pitty. If I hear one more Pit Nutter say "It's all in the way you raise them" I'm going to vomit. Yes we are fully aware they are combative and will attack bulls, horses, livestock, cats, children, elderly people etc. And it's people like you who obviously get off on watching these dogs fight other animals that has helped to promote the destruction and corruption of the once very good breed of the American Staffordshire Terrier. I know I will probably be attacked by many Pit Nutters out there so don't bother.
Guy Says , I see the point you are making but my understanding of the Great pyrenees primary job is simply to keep predators away. They are not intimated by wolves, bears or coyotes, that is how they were bred. To run danger off and get back to their charges. It is rather like comparing apples and oranges. The rancher down the road has several great pyrenees. He has not lost any of his animals. I much admire this giant, gentle and dedicated breed.
I had Wolf Perrenese cross and the one Male and the Perrenese bitch took care of the coyotes on my Ranch in northern Alberta they passed away peacefully but their son met his demise when he went up against a Wolverine. That Wolverine took down a total of 4 dogs a Burmese a Lancia Newfoundlander and a lab plus my Daughter's 1st horse the wolf cross put up a good fight but I had to put him down the vet said he was the toughest dog he had ever seen
