Unreal this animal...She’d take up a position and literally watch over them..and us when we were outside. I’m a pretty tough guy but we all cried like baby’s when her age caught up with her. Pyrs are the most underrated family dogs ever. They are so devoted to their families and trustworthy with children of all ages. If you have ever seen a working Pyr with baby goats jumping all over it, you’ll see why children don’t bother them at all. I have been lucky enough to have Pyrs for about ten years and they are absolutely amazing family dogs.

You think you're slick filming an episode with polar bears and passing it on as dogs?

There’s an amazing story about a GP who refused his owners command to get in the car for a Wilde Fire evacuation because he did not want to abandon his flock. Despite the house and most of the property being destroyed by the fire he found the dog the flock and a couple of does that he adopted in. The dog corralled them safely near a pile of boulders and kept them safe despite his coat getting slightly singed and heat blisters on his paws. One of the best stories from the Tubbs Fire of 2017.

We lost our beloved 12-year-old Great Pyrenees, DimSum last year. He’s the most beautiful and lovable creature on earth. I still miss him terribly. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. I will love him and miss him forever ... Watching this video brings back so many fond memories. Thank you for sharing.

I bred these beauties for almost 20 years. We lived in larger houses but not on a farm and they did great. They make very good service dogs for children. They are gentle and have the instinct to guard. My daughter had a breathing disorder and her pyr Destiny slept with her and would wake her if she stopped breathing. He was not trained his mother did it before he was born and he did it by guarding her since he was a puppy. They are so gentle.

Best dog I’ve ever had. We lost our boy to cancer in 2009 and I’m emotional now just typing this. He LOVED guarding our acreage and I literally had to drag him in the house when it got to -45C lol he just wanted to stay outside and keep coyotes away lol. My husband was away a lot and I slept very soundly knowing our big boy wouldn’t let anyone anywhere near the house. I hope to have another one very soon. True gentle giants.

I remember in high school I was being super nosy in math class, and this dude had said his grandparents had a litter of Great Pyrenees. I googled it then and there, I just saw fluff and white. I told him I'd love one, and the next day he dropped this big old 3-month puppy at my house. Before he left, he said "this one a devil". I remember being worried because I didn't know he was a giant breed, but the moment he came into my house I knew he wasn't going anywhere. It was hell raising him lol, he would escape daily and he would never listen. Sochi still to this day just listens to himself. But my god is he just a ball of love and sass. He's amazing, he'll be 6 in February and I expect another 6 with my best friend/child. These dogs are spectacular!

My brother has one. This breed stole my heart. My brothers Pyr bonded with my son, who is ASD. He was so gentle and calming for my boy, and we plan to get one as soon as we move.

Accurate and informative but they left out important facts for anyone considering adopting this wonderful breed. Shelters are full of surrendered dogs because people wanting a pet don't understand they are getting a dog with working characteristics. The reporter should have shown some footage of Great Pyrenees in protection mode. Their show of aggression is very scary (as it should be). People think they are getting a teddy bear (or snuggly polar bear), but in fact they are getting a dog with hundreds or thousands of years of breeding as a guardian. GPs have a bite strength stronger than that of a Pitbull or a Rottweiler. They can break the spine of a strange dog, coyote, wolf, or bear. Or human. They do not welcome strange people unless the dog is properly socialized and their human partner accepts the stranger. As they said, these dogs are stubborn and independent. Recall is difficult for them to learn. An off-leash Pyr is a disapyr and they are agile houdinis at getting out of fencing. They will learn basic obedience but disregard it if something they think is more important comes along (like protecting their human from something they hear or smell a mile away or more). They will remember bad treatment and behave aggressively afterward. People are sometimes harsh with them in frustration over obedience issues, which makes matters worse. Many have been euthanized because inexperienced owners failed to understand the nature of these magnificent dogs and how to train them. Teenage Great Pyrenees (6-24 months old) can be especially trying. This breed does not mature until 2 or 3 years old. Praise and partnership is what works for these dogs. They do tend to accept the young of any species except birds. GPs consider birds as prey or predators (especially raptors). They will be gentle and tolerant of human children and strange puppies unless they have been mistreated (see above). They may even protect newborn lambs or kids (baby goats) from their mothers until they are taught otherwise. However, always supervise, as individual Pyrs may not behave to breed standards on this if ill or mistreated or feeling threatened. I'd post a photo of my companion Pyr if RU-vid comments allowed it. She is truly elegant, regal, magnificent, and well socialized. An amazing breed if you know what you are getting into.

My mother had four of them. They are literally the sweetest, most gentle dogs you could meet. Awesome in every way, and you should hear their bark! Terrifying!

We rescued a male Pyrenees. He likes to bark, dig in the yard. They are stubborn, intelligent and loyal. They are finicky eaters at times and shed like crazy twice a year. Great family dog.

About 10 years ago, I rode my mountain bike through a flock of sheep. 2 PMD chased me out: I thought I was a dead man!! Very protective and well trained. They were right on my wheel, but never bit. An amazing animal .

had one named tj was the runt of the litter i couldent tell when i was seven i remember riding on him, tryng to walk him and going out in the snow to play with him. I remember falling in the snow and he immediately laying next to me even at seven i could under stand he was trying to protect me and keep me warm i loved him great dog.

They look like little polar bears. Almost the same as Maremma and Kuvasz dogs!

I've had our Pyr for almost a year now; an amazing breed of dog. He's a people person, he patrols the yard, he's gorgeous and his sense of smell and hearing are phenomenal. Yes, a little stubborn and maybe a little noisy from time to time, but very smart I think and a perfect pet and a great friend.

I rescued one 4 years ago, she was almost dead, today she is beautiful, and loving.

Our Great Pyrenees Lily was a rescue. In truth, she rescued me. :) My Maltipoo of 15 years died July 5, 2022. I was led to Lily on the internet and I just had to meet her. The moment we looked into each other's eyes I started to cry. I knew we belonged together and I feel my Maltipoo Dharma led me to her. We have three other dogs an English Cream Retriever, Highland Maltie and a Morkie. They all get along so beautifully. Our Lily is so gentle, patient, respectful and loving. Her heart is pure. I would recommend a Great Pyrenees as a family dog 100%.

I am so glad you mentioned commitment to dogs. Too many are dumped when their so called carers get bored or cant be bothered cleaning them or walking them. They are family. For life.

Comes to visit someone, doesn't even look them in the face and immediately drops to the ground to pet dogs :D ... life goals

"I'm just so proud when I'm walking one" - this is a sentiment dog owners often don't mention. But damn if I don't feel the same while I'm walking my corgi. I can't help being all puffed up about it, and it's a great feeling.

As a person who uses them as actual working dogs, they are very protective of their flock and family. They are not friendly towards strangers. Many working dogs can be aggressive to strangers but that's part of the breed.

I’ve just returned from a mountaineering training course in the French & Spanish Pyrenees. We were based in the renclusa lodge below the Spanish Maladeta and Aneto summits. The workers at the renclusa had a Pyrenean dog…..it was called coco and was enormous. Super friendly and fun to see every day. The lodge worker told us, one day they let it off it’s long outdoor lead and lost it, only to find it days later in France 😊

I used to have a Great Pyrenees for a period of time. I actually found him when driving home one night and thought a horse had just crossed the road ahead of me. When I stopped the huge Pyrenees walked up to me with no tags in the middle of nowhere. I open that back of my Subaru and he just hopped in. He also had the softest pads on his feet, so I felt he had led a cushy life before, can't imagine anyone just dumping him. I tried for several weeks to find an owner without success. I eventually found a doctor that wanted to adopt him and after checking out her home I let her have him. They just loved him. He was an awesome dog and got along great with my Giant female Mal.

I’ve owned Great Pyrenees for over 25 years. 4 have passed (still breaks my heart). My two boys now were 2 last December . One Pyr and one Anatolian Pyr. I’m in my early 60’s and as long as I’m breathing I will own Great Pyrenees. By the way Sandy, your dogs are just beautiful and their personalities are why I Love the breed so much.

My family and I saw a rescue at our shelter. A Great Pyrenees mix, although we can't tell what she's mixed with. Only a puppy they found as a stray with no one picking her up to take her home. We're gonna see her tomorrow and I'm so excited for the future if we adopt her and take her home! Love big dogs so much!

Our neighbor has one - that dog is the neighbor hood watch all by himself. Very protective and suspicious of strange people, cars, dogs. Once they know you, they are the best. But they aren't retrievers, they are shepherds. You would not want to be on the receiving end of a Pyrenees that is not happy with you.

I've encountered only a couple of Pyrenean dogs but they were both extremely docile. You would have to make them either really angry or really frightened to get them to even bite someone.

My best friend in high school had one, and I was terrified of him because of how big and loud he was. When I finally got into the yard with him, he almost wallered and kissed me to death! 😂 Been fascinated with them ever since!

Rule of thumb: The bigger the dog, the more likely that they are laid back and gentle...

My wife and I just adopted a one of these that has some border collie in her. In three months she has gone from the size of our 7 year old corgi to about a third the size of the female in this video. So fluffy!!

I love my Great Pyrenees! He’s been my unofficial service dog since I’ve been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He’s big enough for me to lean on when I can’t walk straight or am struggling with my balance; on fatigue days, he’ll lounge next to me but get up and check the house to make sure things are in order; he checks on me all the time and makes sure I’m not feeling sick or unwell. He’s also so cuddly and lovable and it helped my mental health so much when I was going through an ms episode. I didn’t have to train him to do any of this either, he’s just naturally this way, truly an amazing breed

Pyrs are amazing. We had a shelter puppy that was a Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd/Walker Coonhound mix. Bear was 125 pounds of sheer, unadulterated love. He loved EVERYBODY. And yet I never doubted for one second that he would have gone full protector on anybody who dared get into our house or make a move on us when we walked him. God, I miss that dog. (He died of cancer last November, aged 6 3/4.)

My pyr, Ladybug, was every bit like hers: loyal, protective, affectionate, and large. She lived to be 13, she's always in my heart.

We have a big male. We live on 10 acres in the mountains of British Columbia and never have problems with bears, cougars or coyotes anymore. Super friendly to our AirBNB guests who love him, but seems to instinctively know who belongs and who doesn't. He recently scared off a couple of potential thieves who were too scared to get out of their van.

My boyfriend had one. Everything this lady says is true. They're hard-headed, high maintenance with the fur, and they do what they want to do. They do have a poor appetite. They are seriously like another person. So hard to raise, but GORGEOUS and adorable! I will miss him forever!!!!

I have a Pyr whos almost 2. He is my everything 😂💖. I agree with everything in this video. Extremely barky. Very territorial. ALWAYS shedding, at all times of the year. And very big. My dog Ghost, who still has a bit of growing to do, stands at about 5’8” on his back legs. A lot taller than me 😂. But in the end he is my life! My absolute best friend. I’ve owned many dogs, and he is by far the goofiest dog I’ve ever had. He has so much personality.

I have an Anatolian Shepherd, another Livestock Guardian breed. I’d add the words Magnificent, Creative, and Sensitive. Mine is my PTSD dog, and boy, does he help!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the Great Pyrenees. My 1st Pyr, he's gentle with our goats, cats, peacocks, & chickens sharing the 2 acres. You're absolutely right, I thought he wasn't feeling well, after he's turns 2yrs, he only eats one small meal a day, sometimes he goes on a day without foods, although the foods are out there for him. Not even a beef steak will change his mind, he'll just turns away!

They are superdogs. It's a pity that in the Pyrenees here in France, they are not used enough to protect flocks against wolves. People complain about wolves' attacks but they don't do any thing to protect their sheep with these type of dogs, apart from claiming all the time against the wolves. French don't know/accept, how to live with wildlife, as Spain or Italy do. I feel sorry for the flocks but if more of these dogs were used, it would reduce the attacks.

I have a Pyrenean Mastiff I live in Maine I rescued him from Florida he was covered in yeast sores. Hes healthy happy and loves the cooler climate. Best friend extremely loyal!! Mine is just over 160lbs. He's a beast!

I really like the lady doing this series she seems good with people and dogs but still asks relevant questions about each breed characteristics etc.

My first dog is a great pyr. He's wonderful. Easiest puppy. Easy training. He barks, but everyone LOVES him and i do feel extreme pride walking this massive fluffy sweetheart.

I grew up with one of these (although I knew her as a great pyrenees). She was a twin, dwarf, and runt of the litter so she never got much bigger than a pitbull. But, oh, she was the sweetest thing. All the neighborhood walkers loved her, and when she managed to escape she was so well known to them that they always walked her back to our door. The cats enjoyed to sleep with her, and she had such a gentle way of accepting treats and asking for popcorn on movie nights. I hope one day when I have a big enough yard I'll be able to adopt one again. Thank you for posting this video and showing everyone how lovely this breed is.

My family and I rescued a Great Pyrenees when she was 5 months old and we absolutely love the giant beast. She has been a wonderful guard dog and protected us many times and she loves playing with her slightly bigger sister who is a English Mastiff.

What a HUGE fuzzy bundle of love. I think I'd have to redecorate my house to make it safe for one of these beauties, but ...WHAT A DOG.

These are perfect for 100 acre farm, no smaller. 100 acres per dog, they do make the rounds every night. Chasing coyotes and barking all night. Had a few and they are fantastic. Only get one if you have the acreage. Do not get one because they are pretty, they are WORKING dogs. Let them work. You will be rewarded in spades.

I've had 3 males at once. They were the love of my life ( after my wife ...at that time. Of course.) Everything this woman said is the truth. And I have carried a Great Pyrenees, front paws on my shoulders, dew claws digging into my sides carrying all 125 lbs of him. As he was watching a friend, picking up his sleeping daughter from a sofa. Stroking his head and telling him what a good boy he was, He never took his eyes off of her.

Being we own three of these amazing dogs i must say i will never own any other breed. Loyal, protective yet gentle giants.

We shared my son's big boy Duncan for years, and I've never known a better dog. Yes, he barked all night (music to my ears). Yes, he slow-walked if called when he was comfortable. He had to be disciplined pretty strictly when he was a pup because... that's the only opportunity you get. I have an inner picture of him appearing at my bedside with wide "pet me" smile. My husband came home with a tiny orphan goat one time. The next time I saw him he was bundled between Duncan's big chest and front paws. A s neighbor got too close and I heard a most menacing growl. That was it! No one stuck around to find out whether he was bluffing (he wasn't). We lost him in January. He'll always be in our hearts.

Love how you said "it's like hugging a cloud". I think that all the time. That's why we named our Pyr Skye. For anyone wondering, yes, the fluffy hugs are as awesome as they look. I jokingly say mine is an evil genius since she broke one gate off its hinge and figured out how to unlatch the other one.
