Can you do a more in-depth video about actually living with a protection dogs and having the dog around other people normal social situations? I, and I am sure others who have little actual experience with protection dogs, would like to know how they can safely have their dogs around their friends/family, how to make introductions, what environments it's appropriate and inappropriate to take the dog around (i.e. can I take my dog to a family gathering, out in public, etc), and what to do if you have a dog that simply will not accept strangers even with socialization. I feel like this topic tends to be overlooked.
Good video but you should elaborate more in detail on this topic it’s not really a cut and dry one for most but I love the breakdown of sport and protection! Maybe touch on genetics, character nerves and temperament!
Sure, just socialise often so they aren't fearful. Use correctionsand positive rewards to encourage things like looking back for you checking around corners etc. I good protection dog should know from your own reaction and their ability to percieve a real threat. Fear and reaction biting is not what you want. Always use walks to assert your dominance in a kind way, make them sit at road crossing or just throughout the walk, ease pulling tensions with changes of direction to show you lead them. Talking positively and interacting with your dog whilst walking will make a massive difference as its their favourite activity they want to share it with you. walk tall proud hold the lead loose. Even if your dog will protect you they should still beleive you're their protector too. If they freak at something stop stroke and give them a treat once you have lead them away from the freak out behaviour with the treat as a distraction. Eventually tie rewards with all these past things they found scary. These are just some things I could think of from personal experience. purely opinion based through my experience though, im not an expert like this content creator
I'm so glad you said that because people think I'm being rude or disrespectful and I'm really being concerned for the breed and for people that have the breed any really shouldn't
My dream dog is a confident English or Neo Mastiff that is a family pet but has a defensive mindset. Example: If someone tries to break in, steal from me, or hurt a family member then they should step in. Is that too much to ask nowadays? Please tell me if I’m being unrealistic! A lot of Mastiff breeders I’ve come across are all about “shows” which I don’t give a crap if your dog is a AKC champion. I want a natural guardian dog not a perfect bone structure dog (when I say natural, I mean a natural instinct to protect and guard its family). Is that even possible anymore? I’ve only come across backyard breeders or show breeders. If you know a good breeder for I’m looking for please recommend them to me.
Hi Angela, You need a dog with natural genetic favouring of guarding. I wouldn't say tha most mastiffs would not be able to guard a home because I think for the mos part their bark alone would help. However engaging is down to the dog itself not a guarentee unless you have seen the dog do the work dont believe that their working parents mean they will 100 work. Your main concern with mastiffs should be cost for medical care and the fact the dog will die young and take 2 years to even mature. You should look into the sentry guard dogs this gentleman breeds or other functinal mastiff breeds. working neapolitans splitt years ago into cane corso and and show neapolitan mastiff. Since the cane corso has had boxer dogs and other watered down unhealthy breeds. A healthy deep generation American Bandogge, Presa Canario is what I own currently. You may be interested in the American bandogge in particular as its American pitbull x Neapolitan Mastiff working line. Both of my dogs from about 10 weeks old showed natural guarding abilities are incredibly soft and loving like a big puppy. A good presa canario or bandogge should be suspicious of strangers. I haven't heard of many presa canario that wouldn't attack someone if they entered their home. 5 months old someone came into my house it was then I saw he was not a puppy anymore
So do you have a dogs that will protect against a man let's say breaking in your house. And dogs that will engage like a fix or coyote? Because from what you stated they are not one in the same
owning a guard dog is very stressful if you're not built for it. Do you take on being incharge of every social situation? Are you skilled at reading behaviour of others and your dog to the point you'd bet your freedom on it? You will deal with daily ignorance that can get grinding on you. The amount of my girlfirends family I have had to lay the law down with. There are people with no experience of a real working dog, they will act like they are fine with your dog and they think they know best, untill their child does something like try and play fight or your family members other dog is a little shit and snaps sometimes, perhaps they dont care because its 15LBs. Either way if youre not already tuned into those events you've just got a family member injured badly and your dog is gonna get put down and you're gonna get arrested. I can call them off attacks but its not much help if theyve bitten the person even once. How you talk to people you'll need to watch, my dog will not take someone speaking loudly to me hell stand right on my toes and puff up. You have to make everyone aware of your dogs behaviours if they want to be around you. Although ultimately what will happen is you have to adapt everything to your dog as you can't make your dog everyone elses issue. Youll have may idiots try setting their dogs on yours too. True story ive had somoene wih a pug cross jakc russel never stop his dog from trying to nip my dog even when Ive told him my dog will hurt it by mistake. But because its their dog they genuinely beleive it is super man. You can bet the second your dog corrects them theyre gonna start bitching too. I honestly want more legislation here in the uk because of the bully breeeds everyone has with 0 knowledge of dogs.
Yes, but that is a very slippery slope. I am speaking on the right based off of protection. If we keep it real so to speak, police and military will be supported on their word and evidence. Private citizens need proof, and words are often useless...in court, especially civil court.
