There are several products on the market designed to protect our implanted devices while we play sports or otherwise live our lives. Here’s a review of one such product called Vital Beat.
Note 1) I am not a medical professional giving medical advice! Please talk to your doctor before beginning or resuming any strenuous physical activities, especially any contact sports. Any decision to engage in contact sports should be made by you in consultation with your healthcare professional team.
Note 2) Using such a product does not guarantee complete protection for your implanted device. Any decision to use a product such as this should be made by you in consultation with your health care professional team.
Note 3) This is not a paid endorsement for any particular product. A representative from Vital Beat contacted me after seeing one of my other videos and sent me their product free of charge in exchange for my private thoughts on the product as an athletic patient. I created a private video for Vital Beat, and decided to create this video separate from that engagement. I have not been paid or compensated for this review. I have given Vital Beat permission to use this video as they wish..

This is great. I am a Muay Thai fighter, I am 58 and as I just posted in one of your videos I just had had the ICD implanted 3 weeks ago. I asked the doctor if I could spar and they advised against it, but I said I would put on those armor vests they use in combat and underneath I could put some padding for extra protection... I have to ones again get more info and solutions from you! My combat sports are my passion and I would rather die than to know I can't never spar again! Thank you!

Hi there, i just read your reply and was interested to know did you purchase this znd did it work? I to am a Muay Thsi practitioner, had my device fitted two months ago, went back to MT last night for the first time, but took it easy. I would love to be able to spar again, even if lightly. Any advice on what youre using would be fantastic. Thanks.

@@johnnesbitt3210 I have a lot of gear from RDX, so I got me the RDX F6 Kara Coach Chest Protector, and I put more foam padding on the device. Spare very slow, no hits should land on the ICD. But horsefly I stopped any type of exercise because exercise triggers my VT. It’s over for me, unfortunately! I recommend you use extreme caution if you spar. Only super light sparring. Avoid sparring with the big egos!

Thanks for responding so quickly. I m currently in discussion with my cardiac team. It looks like a new aortic valve, AV node ablation for chronic a-fib,followed by a insertion of a handy dandy pacemaker. This will be all open heart. Anyway, I have watched all your videos and have found them to be quite informative. I guess in a weird way I’m looking forward to this as it has been over 10 years of nothing but frustration. My EF’s have been as low as 17 and as high as 62. It is currently 45 down from 54, seven months ago. I was just curious about your thoughts on the shield system. Thanks again

Best of luck to you Joel. I hope the implant helps you get back to normal again. Take care, and thanks for watching!

Hi Douglas. Thank you so much for your videos. Incredibly informative and so appreciated for the piece of mind. I am scheduled for an Icd implant on Jan 5th. I’m terrified of all of the unknowns. Can I ask if your device is under the muscle? I don’t see an outline at all through your shirt and you look to be very fit. Does under, over make a difference?
@DouglasRachac
@DouglasRachac 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for the comment! I appreciate it. My first implant was under the skin and one corner seemed to catch on everything. Car doors, door frames, cabinet doors, dog paws, kids heads while wrestling…. When I went in for a lead revision I asked that the device be buried a little more, so my doc put it under the muscle. It’s so much more comfortable, and shows a lot less. It is a more invasive procedure, so my recovery was more painful than my first implant. It felt like a burning sensation, but Tylenol and large amounts of ice on the incision helped a lot. So, under the muscle has worked really well for me, and I recommend it, especially to younger active people. Good luck with your ICD implant. Try not to worry. It’s there to protect you, not harm you or limit you. Just take it one day at a time, listen to your body, and get back to living as soon as you can.

I love the idea, but at almost 400$ cad for two shirts it’s so very expensive for something that would likely have to be replaced eventually (after all, it’s a just a t shirt)

Is it not a bit low? Mine was placed infraclavicular. I wonder if it could cover that area. Planning to buy this tho.

My device is perhaps an inch or two lower than most, but for me its a perfect spot. I wouldn't want it any higher. I hope you have good luck with your purchase.

I ride motorbikes, mainly in the dirt. I had an ICD implanted recently and am now considering some sort of protection for it if I come off. An option for my use is an airbag, which inflates over the Icd.
@DouglasRachac

That sounds amazing! I haven't heard of that technology yet.

@@DouglasRachac they have been available for at least 5 years. You can get ones that go over your jacket or ones that fit as a vest under a jacket. A few are electronically activated via accelerometers etc and one well known one has a cord attached to your bike. They aren’t very popular but all feature a section up your chest and over the are where the ICD is. I shudder to think of the potential damage I could do to both the device and my self if I came off, hence my interest. Great series you have made.

Hi! Do you have shield protector or pocket design in the left side?
@DouglasRachac
@DouglasRachac Год назад
Hi Santiago, thanks for watching. This is not my product, but the company that makes them, Vital Beat, can move the pocket to what ever location you need. They have shirts with pockets on the left side for traditional pacemakers (implanted in the chest) and for the S-ICD (implanted on the left side). If you contact them they will be able to help you out.

Another helpful video! Is your device on your right side, though? Or is your video just mirrored? Thanks again!
@DouglasRachac
@DouglasRachac 4 года назад
Jeffrey Levy yes, my device is on my right side. I have an anatomical anomaly called a persistent left superior vena cava. Basically the plumbing leading into my heart is flipped. It doesn’t mean anything in terms of cardiac function or output, but it means I can’t have a left sided implant, so it’s on the right. Thanks for watching!

@@DouglasRachac Fascinating! I guess one benefit: no seat belt issues. :) I really appreciate hearing about products like this. I get my ICD on Monday, and I play volleyball and softball.
@DouglasRachac

Jeffrey Levy hey, good luck on Monday! If you have any pain afterwards ice packs are a huge help. Talk to your doctor, but they typically say that after 6-8 weeks of healing you can ease back into your normal sports, just in time for a late summer game or two! And welcome to the club!

Good idea if it gives you piece of mind, although they are totally un necessary.
@DouglasRachac

In everyday life, I agree. But for someone who plays a physical sport, or spars in martial arts, this kind of protection would be a big help. I’ve only used it once myself, while paintballing. A shot to my device site would have been incredibly painful.
@pijnto

@@DouglasRachac Fair enough, although a shot from a paint ball any where is pretty painful.

Could this system be used to help with seatbelt issues?
@DouglasRachac
@DouglasRachac 3 года назад
Hi Joel, it could, but there are other options you may want to try first. Here’s a video I made talking about those options. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y4anxL8q56g.html

Scott, there are other options out there. Some people have had luck with BMX shirts and jackets. They have built in protective shields, and may cost a bit less.

Does this provide protection from electrical environment?
@DouglasRachac
@DouglasRachac 3 месяца назад
Kevin, no, this only provides protection from impacts. I’m not sure there is a product out there that has been tested and is shown to protect against electrical influences. The good news is, most items are safe to use at either 6 or 12 inches of distance. Even welding can be done safely if the recommendations from the med-tech companies are followed. If you google the words “electromagnetic compatibility guide” and the name of your device manufacturer you’ll find their info on what precautions, if any, you need to take.

can you play american football with that ?
@DouglasRachac

That would have to be a personal decision, and one made with your doctor’s blessing. I think it would certainly protect a device from damage, but a hard tackle might hurt despite this protection.
