Recovering from Pacemaker Surgery 

I got my first pacemaker at age 15. I'm 50 now and got my most recent change 2 days ago. I get scared every time. But I have never had an issue. Good luck every one!

Hey man I just want to say I really appreciate this I’m 26 years old I have a few congenital heart diseases/conditions I have a single ventricle Fontaine heart I’ve had an ASD&VSD I might have pulmonary hypertension I’m still going through a lot of test and I am most likely going to need a pacemaker and I was extremely scared until I’ve watched most of your videos I just wanna tell you that you really help me relax today I was scared af .

Thanks for this - very useful. I had my pacemaker fitted three weeks ago. I do feel a bit less tired and know I have lost fitness. I am a runner doing 10k, half marathons and trail runs. My resting heart rate was 32 - 38 which I thought was fine but I was also having missed beats which meant I often had to pull up very suddenly during a race because I became dizzy and light headed. I don’t think I’ll really know how effective the surgery has been until I start running again - and I don’t have to pull up. I was told not to lift, stretch up or run for 6 weeks. In three weeks, I shall start running again. My children bought me a weekend away in Copenhagen to celebrate my 70th birthday last January, so we shall all do the Parkrun together on the first Saturday of November 2019. Thanks for videos and observations - I have found them interesting and helpful.

I had mine installed on April 3rd. Experienced everything you did. My job is physically demanding so I haven't been allowed back to work yet, so we'll see how that goes when I get back. Stay Healthy!

Thank you for this video. I wish I had seen it earlier though as I had my pacemaker implanted 2 months ago. It is however still very useful as it alayed some lingering fears/anxieties.

I'm 70 and just got an ICD, had my first checkup/adjustment today. I was emergency hospitalized with VTAC episodes so getting this thing was not run of the mill and I was in for 2 weeks. Once out I had no problems with it and the best I can describe it is that it feels like a pack of cigarettes in my shirt pocket, nothing more. Seat belts are not a problem and although I can feel it's weight, there is no pain or discomfort associated. These things are simply amazing!

Oh yes, you can definitely feel when they make “adjustments”. Get a seat belt cover, preferable sheepskin one. Helps a lot.

Had a dual chamber leads to my pacemaker. Only had sling for 48 hours. After that I was able to use the arm only restrictions were don't lift anything with that arm or raise it above shoulder level. Took bandage off myself after 48 hours but left the medi strips on. After 7 days it was completely healed and strips were removed. Full activities after 48 hours as long as I didn't raise that arm up in the air. No pain , not sore at all. After the procedure I even looked for a bandage to see that he did the procedure. My first follow up my surgeon scanned the pacemaker. Didn't feel a thing. No adjustment made. My pacemaker is working at 18% and is set at 60. After 5 weeks was allowed to raise the arm up again. It's been 3 months now that I have the pacemaker and I don't even know it's there

re: the seatbelt problem - you can get a sheepskin 'sleeve' that fits over the belt permanently to protect your shoulder. I am lucky - I have a pacemaker, but in Australia we drive on the left, so the driving position in the car is on the right, therefore, the seatbelt is over the right shoulder.

I'm 17 years old and I have been diagnosed with second-degree type II AV block ( mobitz II); The definitive treatment for this form of AV Block is an implanted pacemaker. I can't describe what I'm feeling... I mean... Look at my age

Not sure where you had your surgery but I didn't go through all that. After my first install, I was back to work in 2 days with no sling. That was 10 years ago. I just got my replacement 2 months ago. In by 6, out by 10. Back to work driving Uber the next day. Just had scar check last week. All OK.

I had my pacemaker fitted 14 months ago at New Cross hospital at Wolverhampton, I have not heard anything from them since my surgery.

I didnt get a sling . just told not to lift heavy things and not strech my arm over the head.

Sorry shouldn't be going to work for at least 3 weeks, I was agreed to have 6 weeks off (ok lifting) but I also took 4 weeks holiday as well. Sling, no I didn't have a sling. In fact as was going to US for training after what I thought would be 6 weeks, I was going out on bike. I started after 4 days because have aero bars (tri bars) meaning there is no pull on pacemaker. But actually I went to US after just 4 weeks because op was cancelled and under pressure they gave me another one in 2 weeks. So actually only had 4 weeks plus 4 weeks holiday. Anyway got it checked before leaving to US (from UK) and found I was hititng over 170 when cycling. sure they were shocked I was cycling, there you go. This really is a minor surgery, I have had far worse (like a vertebrae fracture and Kyphoplasty). wasn't cycling after 4 days anyway. I wasn't even kept in overnight, and no one is (in Uk)unless complications. By the way had it on right side because generally have shoulder bags on left side (and was going to US with such a bag).

Does your pacemaker vibrate at times?? Like the feel of a cellphone on vibration? Do reply... I'm from Pakistan..

Did they give you a sling with instructions? The one I got had no instructions that anybody could decipher. 4 nurses tried to put it on but they gave up and tied two straps together.

You had really crappy diet and did not excercise for years. Pace makers should be the last resort, since it causes damages to heart in the long run. I wouldn't have gone the conventional route to be honest.
