You did a fantastic job in reviewing the Didache Catholic Study Bible. Your reviews are far greater than what other reviewers I had listened to covering review of bibles. I grew up Catholic, but in my days Catholic study bibles were studied in Catholic high schools which I never attended, I went up to the 5th grade then to public school. I really enjoy your bible reviews, very honest and very informative. You present a balanced and honest review, thank you.

@@Shevock When I went to elementary Catholic school, it was a small class size and the Catholic priest came to teach Catechism. We did not get or have bibles in our elementary school days. My older brother started in a Catholic high school and had at least had one year of Catholic Bible before we moved out of the neighborhood and went to a public school. I believe that you learn and understand more of the Bible when we get older and more mature.

Good review. I wonder, as a Catholic, do Protestants add the extra bits about Catholicism to signify to other Protestants that they're still Protestants or is it because you genuinely don't understand the Catholic ways of reading scripture or the history of it and how this way developed over the past 2000 years as a way to conserve this tradition? E.g., I respect the Protestant choice to go with the 8th Century Masoretic Jewish scriptures over the 3rd Century Christian canon for the Old Testament. I don't agree with the choice to go with it, but I understand it. But if I were reviewing a Bible that was missing the 2nd-Canon I likely wouldn't even bring it up. Bible readers likely know the fact of them not being there. However I'd be interested in verses I know Catholics and Protestants interpret differently like John 6 and Revelations 12 and James 2.

Excellent review of the Didache Study Bible. The Ignatius Study Bible coming out the fall in the RSV2CE translation should be a bit more conservative than the Didache Bible. A question ... I watched your video on the Wesleyan Study Bible, and agree with you that its not so good. So, which study bible would you recommend to conservative Methodist? The Wesleyans are probably my favorite Protestants. I like the Book of Common Prayer 1662, 1928 American, and the 2019 ACNA as well. So, if I were a Protestant, I would be in a conservative Anglican denomination, though I would follow John Wesley's revision of the 39 Articles.

I greatly appreciated this review! Especially the inclusion of the CCC alongside the study Bible. I feel you respected the Catholic faith quite well for being a Protestant throughout, which I enjoyed. One thing to keep in mind about the Church's reliance on the tradition that came before, is the teaching isn't in a vacuum. As you dig through that CCC, you'll find it's merely the tip of the iceberg of well over a thousand years of writings ranging from eye witnesses of Christs earthly ministry through present day. Many of the works cited by the CCC can be found and studied (and yes, picked apart if you want). For me, I found out the phrase "nothing is new under the sun" quite realistic. Everything we argue about today has been discussed long ago...

On the layout of the deuterocanonical books- you're not going to find any Catholic Bibles that put all of them at the end of the OT, in a kind of appendix. I think there's a little variation in how additions to Esther are laid out (because they're a little chronologically jumbled in the Greek version), but in English Bibles, I don't think there's even a variation in the order of the books. My Spanish Catholic Bible has a different order, ending with Wisdom and Ecclesasticus, but the other deuteros are mixed in with the other OT books. I think (and I'm not sure this is you) lots of people hear deutero and think, "oh, so this is kind of viewed as a secondary canon". But historically, the deutero refers to second in time (i.e, they're written later), not in importance. The "in the canon but at a sort of lower place" is a more common view within Anglicanism and some Orthodox will describe their position in that way, but it's a pretty out of bounds view within Catholicism. Official magisterial documents don't even use the word deuterocanon, to avoid giving the impression that there's a substantive divide. Also, I think the standard, and more fully fleshed out Catholic interpretation of the woman of Revelation 12 is that she's both the Church and Mary. Not surprised that a limited study bible opted for only the one but every Catholic apologist I've read recognizes both.

On an unrelated note, when you talked about not liking the double column Bible. I have what I guess you would call dyslexia. I have a problem when I read where it seems like the letters move and it’s very hard for me to keep my place and I often will keep the bookmark under the lines. Keep my visual focus in line but I also find it way easier to read in the shorter to column formats so if you ever have someone who has an actual Physical type problem with reading and keeping their place it might be helpful to try to print, also a large print makes it much easier for me to read as well and I can see the small print, but for some reason the large print it’s just easier to keep my place and it’s not as hard to stay focused like the letters don’t seem to move around as much.

Calling the Catholic belief unique seems like a strange choice of words. If you just mean different than other denominations, yes you’re correct. But statistically Catholic belief is the norm considering the majority of Christians on Earth are Catholic, meaning more than 50% of all Christian’s, while Protestants if you add up all their denominations represent 30 something percent.

The Catholic Church doesn't "infallible define verses". She infallible defines certain doctrines when there has been controversy about them. They usually have their basis in Scripture but the verses itself need not be defined as they're already part of revelation. OTOH, Catholic/Christian theology dies not merely consist of these infallible statements - these are just the bones Catholics must agree with. But just because the Church hasn't defined some "eschatological road map" doesn't mean that this aspect of the faith is not irrelevant.

The gospel is where we draw the line. How does a person enter heaven? Christians believe all humans are sinful and cannot enter heaven in such a condition. Christianity teaches that salvation comes to us only by God's grace, through faith in Jesus alone, apart from any human works or good deeds. One cannot enter heaven any other way. Those hindus would disagree. A lot of people who call themselves Christian would even disagree. This is why the Bible is chock full of warnings about false teachers and false faith.

I believe their view of Onanism is contradictory to the rest of the torah. After all, if you spew, you are considered unclean for the rest of the day unless the sunsets or you bathe, which may alude to baptism. If you have sex, you are unclean for the week. If you spew fluid in your sleep, you and your bed are unclean for a week and you need to make sacrafices. The priest also has to sanctify the bed. By the way, being unclean means not partaking in the holy things of God. For Jews, that everything to do with the temple and holidays. For a Christian, that might mean the eucharist. Or if you die in your uncleanliness, being taken to heaven. So pray God doesn't ask for you then. This last interpretation is subject to the main interpreter, Jesus.
