I was Robbie's mechanic back in '89 when he was riding a John Lassak prepared Aprilla Rotax powered 250 gp bike- Robbie was a JOY to work with- we ended up finishing 3rd in the AMA 250 cc championship that year - don't be fooled by Robbie's mild mannerisms - when that helmet was strapped on, you had better be ready for a fight - unbelievable talent
When Kenny did his annual fundraiser for wounded veterans in 2015 it was at the ranch in Hickman. Inside his shop were some of these Proton GP bikes and shelves full of parts for them, many still wrapped in plastic. It was pretty unreal to see all this cool stuff. KR quipped that there's a lot more to being a bike builder than having a hacksaw and a grinding wheel.
I started watching GP at the end of the 2 stroke era..... Saw them life, the noise, the smell...... No electronic aids, like a wild horse. Glorious days Thanks for the video
like a wild horse is a good description. I had a pumped YZ490 and the funnest thing about it was. Letting one of my buddies try and ride it for the first time. HAHAHAHA...They would always bring it back within 1 minute and say "ok I'm done" With no smile on their face because it scared the shit out of them almost flipping them over backward in every gear and they never wanted to ride it again.
I made pistons from forged pre-forms for these engines in the late 90's. The client was 'Tom Walkinshaw Racing'. There were a few minor design changes with skirt vents and crown shapes. I rescued a few of these pistons from the scrap bin when I was made redundant. If you reply to this comment with some contact details you may have them.
@Peter Cutler, I would very much enjoy and email from you regarding a piston, grown up building tiddlers and would love an insight into the GP bikes Jamesgibson1999@googlemail.com
wow just wow, I absolutely love the GP 500cc two strokes mainly from the USD fork bikes onwards, that triple engine is a unique design that's for sure, kind of like a semi factory engine, between the v twin privateer and the V4 factory bikes, and it is totally unheard of to own a set of factory GP bikes with all the spares, so awesome.
jeremiah jayaseelan you must be doin something wrong. I am 63yrs old I have 12 motorcyles. A mix of both 2 and 4 stroke. I have never rebuilt a 4 stroke cheaper than a 2 stroke and my 4 stroke motocross bikes need more engine maintenance than any of my 2 strokes ever did. The 4 strokes are awsome power wise and easy to ride but 2 strokes are cheaper to run and I get more fun riding them because they challenge me
Back in the late 70s and 80s was BIG into the triple 2 strokes ..had them ALL at one time or another up to the kawi 900 ..man those were the days .folks thanks for the flash back
Back when it took more than just money to win..and massive skills n balls..were a MUST..today we'll you all KNOW..back then it took everyone to make it happen ..
tu fully modenas, lepas modenas tarik diri, proton join. then last race australia 1st pole, race dapat no 10.pastu xpakai lagi sbb motogp switch 500cc to 1000cc
I'm not all the way thru the video yet but how dare you rob us in the US the ear candy of a two stroke with music. We rarely ever get to hear a racing two stroke!
Robbie Peterson, met you and Rich Oliver ( talked to your mechanics outside the bathroom later ) at Road Atlanta years ago at The Grand Nationals. You guys were/ had been racing Yamaha 250 two-strokes, but that day you guys had the first Malborough Yamaha 500 c.c. two stroke, the first time I had seen, possibly touched the bike of legends. Great day for me. My second visit to South Africa, went to the South African G.P., took my dad who was living in Capetown via Swaziland, stayed small guest house with two teams, got pit pass from Shell Advance Honda boss. Quite the time! Gary McCoy won.
Wonder how much he paid for them... I am sure KR didn’t give them away. He has option to ride anytime he wants, most likely also to buy them back or approve of a sale to someone else.
Zaman Tun M.. Era gemilang Malaysia. Proton terkenal dgn konsep 3 cylinder. Selain Proton KR 3,Ada Forgaty FP1. Dan hari ini Proton Geely dipacu engine 3 cylinder.
Jeremy McWilliams used to get a good time out of it qualified on pole at Phillip island in 2002 got swamped of the four strokes of the line but one lap pace in his own it was rapid
Cosworth developed a special metal matrix alloy for this project which was based on 2618 aluminium with increased silicon to limit expansion. We called it 4X alloy. I recall there were 3 minor changes with transfer vents and crown shapes before the project ended. I rescued a few discarded pistons which I still have today. However they are bare without ring or pin. Peter Cutler
Hard to believe this has so few views. RU-vid viewers are an odd lot. I am not much of a "personalities" person, but a "science fair" type. Thanks for the wonderful content. Nuts and bolts > dumb ego stroking.
Yeah two stroke are fun for the highly skill moto racer...but for the average an even a good rider who not used to that power hit point lift the front an turn the corner on the back wheel its no surprise kenny elected to work the power so it was more friendly ...i always wonder how the heck with all that front end lifting kick of the nsr or yzr how they road in heavy wet conditions...so its no shock the king made it smooth all the way thru....one thing about the japanese their riding an roads where very different an obvisiouly their motorcycle philosphy...of what they want to build too....as a serious racer i can understand KR i raced motocross for 14 years...an most of the bikes were not race friendly motors had to be done suspension overhauled or u get spit off an that was bike wide...now things are much different...all street bikes are design around the honda CBR...a razor blade handling type Road racer.....turns beautiful but not as stable...peace that is really cool the proton...i know the oil gas era was banned by european emissions not sure if racing was first...to do it but thanks for the look....very nice....
This is pretty cool... I literally discovered motorcycle racing 3 years ago, and this KR3 bike just yesterday... Does this bike still come out to play in public view ?
Funny @1:12 As you can see the kr3 simply steam's past the rest of the bike ,No kidding Batman ,the Rest of the bikes are 125cc & up old relecks the Robert's Former bike was a early 90's Generic Low grade Work's bike that couldn't touch the factory bikes of Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki , & in that order.
nice ride ! What two stroke oil you running ? at 50;1 it must be good..... my old race days I ran PolyOxide, zero carbon.......no failures, like most good things it went away .....
Great, thanks....I have some vintage two strokes I'm going to be firing up.... I used to race at Lodi Cycle Bowl where KR started and before he started, now I just blow out the carbon once in awhile
That's great. We used to live on Standiford Avenue in Modesto. Brother Rob lived in Mantica and we used to visit Lodi often. We even built a Husaberg dirt tracker for little Kenny to ride there on Friday nights. The thing blew its guts going into turn three and took out half the field with the oil spill. Good memories. Now back in Africa...
No, you implied it was developed during the 4 stroke era. It was getting top tens in 1997, 5 years before then, it never got much better, it wasn't really a match for the Honda's and Yamaha's.
@@zafarel6960 nope, no ill intent towards the guy above. I love racing bike and im from malaysia, i knew the brand and just correct what was wrong. You got butthurt? Weak.
Very interesting video but the music is just far toooo loud and no need for it. Plus Mr Mcwilliams is Northern Irish and not Irish.... There is a difference....
That's one lucky dude that's the closest you'll get to owning a works gp bike as yamaha/honda/Suzuki do not sell their gp bikes 2 strokes not dearly missed
I really want to watch someone make a video 500cc 2 stroke motogp battle with today modern motogp at same time same circuit not comparison from seperate videos...please im desperate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually , there's a modern version of 2 stroke bike nowadays but it was built by some unknown manufacturers from Switzerland ....and its called Suter MMX 500 , you can watch it on you tube.....the engine capacity is actually 576cc, awesome and good looking bike with top speed excessing 300km/h ..... The price is out of this world , each one will cost you 95,000usd ( RM 400,000in Malaysian price) They have races against 4 stroke 1000cc bikes in isle of man TT race.....
@@KiroroShinako patut nya proton fikirkan perkara ni...motosikal jenama PROTON..dari cc rendah sampailah ke cc tinggi..kita boleh berbangga dgn motosikal jenama negara...bukan kereta jer.
Very nice, but the bike was neither designed by Kenny Roberts nor by Sponsor Proton.Engine designed and built in England by TWR and the frame built by French company FTR. Sorry to say but no significant technical engagement by Malaysian company Proton. That might have been the problem because TWR had no 2 stroke experience. Why did KR choose TWR will remain a mystery to me.German Sepp Schlögel or Swiss engineering company Suter would have been better choice.
Todays Bikers Wouldn't Have Clue What Its Like Riding A Two-Stroke I Only Had A 250A Suzuki. The RD Yamaha Was Faster And Looked Better. But I Could Leave Any Car Up Too 70mph No Problem Wish I Had It Now At 60 Years I Would Still Burn A Car Off Ha Ha ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C_TZA-zh6Xc.html Arch Enemy But Best Mate's Barry And Kenny. Memakai mesin KTM dan HONDA, proton hanya di jadika sponsor saja di motor ini. Sama seperti petronas di motogp dan f1 cuma nama untuk sponsor produk pemasaran.
