@@effortless4588 because Alex wanted his plan to work at first, because he lost all faith in humanity after being shot by his love in the comics it was the final straw. He would build a plan to remake humanity in his own image, infecting specific people to join his Evolved as you continue through the campaign Mercer got increasingly annoyed with heller because of him getting in the way of his plans. He tested hellers resilience after he killed the Goliath to see if he was indeed worth keeping around even after all the trouble he’s caused, after all having the strongest evolved around would prove to be useful in his takeover and Heller was still subjected to having his mind changed. If you think that is bs or whatever look at it like this. Mercer grabbed heller by the throat and Heller couldn’t get himself free, he couldn’t even move one of Mercers fingers from his throat. But whenever Heller resisted being consumed by Alex, he let him go. Continuing on through the campaign Mercer basically changes his mind because of Hellers love and selflessness when it came to the ones he loved especially for his daughter put a spark in Alex. So Alex captured Hellers daughter so he would come for him, he gathered all the strongest evolved in one spot then consumed them so that they wouldn’t get in the way and continue their carnage. And finally let Heller win and consume him, Trusting Heller with the future of mankind. He even welcomed him to the top of the food chain at the end. So there’s that.
