At Starfleet Lock & Safe we are regularly called upon to provide custom safe solutions for our clients and customers.
We often see old safes that the customer would like to convert from a mechanical lock to an electronic lock. Quite often that isn't an issue, but every once in awhile we run into situations where special features are needed, such as multiple users, manager codes, dual control and more. When that happens, we try to satisfy the customers needs with the proper lock.
SecuRam Systems offers a wide variety of electronic locks. One of the best and most popular safe locks is the SecuRam ProLogic system. Specifically, the L02 keypad which can be mated with four different style of locks. This is especially good when dealing with institutions that require all of their locks be programmed identically. However, not all safes are compatible, even with the variety of locks to choose from. When this happens we have to come up with a satisfactory solution.
There exists a group of older safes that operate with by mechanical safe locks that require the lock to remain in the unlocked position while the safe is open. With a mechanical lock this isn't a problem. However, an electronic lock wants to automatically re-lock itself within a few seconds. This can cause the safe to be locked in the open position and require the user to re-enter their combo code in order to re-lock the safe.
There are electronic locks that allow you to withdraw the lock bolt by turning the keypad or a knob. These allow the safe lock to remain unlocked until the safe is relocked and the electronic dial or knob turned back to normal. They are called Direct Drive electronic locks.
Unfortunately the SecuRam ProLogic series of keypads are unavailable in a direct drive. The electronics are incompatible with the concept.
So how do you get around the issue. You design a switch that tells the electronic lock to remain in the unlocked position until such time as the boltworks have been re-extended. Then the lock is allowed to lock itself back up. Sounds simple, but it really isn't.
This video shows you my prototype switch and how it works. This means that we now have the capability to install electronic (non-direct drive) safe locks on safes where we could not do so before.
We hope you find this video educational. For more information about the services and products available from Starfleet Lock & Safe, Inc., check out our Facebook page, our other RU-vid videos, or visit our website.
