They could have used USB-C power delivery part of the USB standard instead of the proprietary Qualcomm QuickCharge. You can get USB-PD 20V 60W laptop charger really cheaply and the prices will keep dropping because a lot of laptop manufacturer are transitioning to it. Maybe, if the QuickCharge handshake is made in software in the STM32, it can be modified to use the USB-PD.

When you commented at Ave's Video, I taught you are going to hack TS100 to work at USB Voltages!!

Which readily-available tips (ie; does Plato etc make versions to fit) fit this iron, or are they proprietary to that brand?

Will the TS80 work with a 6S lipo? Would I have to make an XT60 to USB-C cable?

20V 5A USB C is available. The current MacBook Pro chargers provide it.

Hello Marco, thanks for your videos. About a year ago I bought a Total Nuclear Annihilation pinball. Sick game and a lot of fun. Recently I've had some issues that require some soldering. I've never soldered but would like to learn as I plan on adding more pins to my collection. Are either TS80 or TS100 good for this application and if so is one better than the other? I completely agree with wanting the distance between tip and fingers to be as short as possible. I was planning to build my own iron using the Weller tips, until I found a Metcal for cheap. The ergonomics are superb.

I wonder is it possible to tweak ts100 firmware to incorporate a kind of fast acting controller to compensate drop in tip temperature.

It has markings for Qualcom Quickcharge 3 for power supply. Can you test it with a USB-Power Delivery power supply, like the ones bundled with apple laptops these days, or the nintendo switch charger, or one used by a fast charging google nexus phone? As i'm not an android user, I don't have any qualcom QC chargers. I'm curious if it can negotiate power from a USB compliant power supply or if it will just run slowly at 5v, as that could make or break my interest in the product.

Another totally Awsome video and review! Great video Marco! :) I think the tip of the new TS80 seems scarily enough with those 5$ USB solder irons ... it looks actually exactly like those. The first time I saw one of those I ordered one and was surprised to see those little tips do actually work! It seems to me the heating element is confined/packed into the tip part and hence it does provide for more efficient soldering with less power. I do not know if Marco made a review of one of those cheap USb solders ... but it would be interesting to mention anyway ... I know bigclivedotcom did one review of those ...

I've been eyeing the TS100 myself, but, based on this video, the TS80 seems like such a good upgrade that I think I'll just wait for it. I do very much like the design and I have no issue with the USB type-C connector.

Since my Weller WTCP-S magnetic switch died, I urgently need another iron. I would like to keep on using my Weller PS and the silicone power cable, it is 26 years old and still in fine condition. The price of a new Weller magnastat equals the price of a TS100. So I put a 4A bridge rectifier in de Weller station (without a regulator, since I just have a (1A) LM7824 available, which is clearly to weak). Unloaded, the PS now shows 22.4 VDC (unregulated and unfiltered). Would that be usable for the TS100 - TS80? In fact, I just wonder if the TS100 - 80 can handle an unregulated, unfiltered power supply.

Looking forward to seeing if we can use a 3.5mm jack extension lead with this to make what you hold lighter

I think my main issue with using type c usb is the mechanical stresses on the connector for something you're going to be holding in your hand and it really wouldn't have been hard to have a barrel jack but supply it with a type-c adaptor you could run inline for a bit more versatility.

I really Look forward to that. Exactly what i would love to have. You have to be careful though with comparing quickcharge with powerdelivery. They are compleatly different: Qualcomm quickcharge negoshiates over the usb2.0 D+ and D- pins while PD has 2 dedicated pins on the usb C port called CC1 and CC2. Quickcharge just tries to set a output voltage over a slow digital handshake (takes around 2 secounds) while PowerDelivery has a real communicationsystem, so the device knows which voltages and currents can be achieved and then decides on what to choose.

I made a silicone power cord for my TS100 from a tattoo gun power cord. Flexible, solder resistant, it almost makes the TS100 feel cordless. I have an Aoyue 968A+ but the TS100 has pretty much replaced it.

Thanks for the amazing video (as usual) :D I decided to finally buy a TS100 yesterday, mostly because I got my notebook (and power brick) with me nearly all the time, but an USB C version is even better, since I want to buy a good, fast charging battery bank for a long time now.

What are these devices used for?

Anyone else had an issue with tip oxidation out of the box? Had my ts-80 a few months now sat in the packet and the first time I used it, within about 3 junctions I noted that it was getting increasingly harder to get the solder to wet the tip, so gave it a bit of a clean on a sponge and application of solder and nope it's an instant balls up. With probably about 10 minutes use in total solder no longer wets the tip at all and heat doesn't travel to the end of the conical tip sufficient to melt solder. It almost seems like whatever coating is applied to the tip oxidizes incredibly fast compared to what I'm used to. Giving the tip a bit of a flux bath and application of solder worked for another couple of junctions but we're back to balls forming and a no wet tip. Attempts to use flux as before to try and restore it haven't been successful. The tip itself doesn't look pitted or blackened unevenly, it merely has a smooth consistent dark transition line between tip material and the rest of the iron. Just ordered a replacement wedge tip and some tip tinner in the hopes of restoring it back to usable condition but to say it's frustrating would be an understatement also tips for this iron are ridiculously expensive compared to the ts-100, £17 just for one. Update: this worked btw, using dedicated tip tinner flux/solder puck seemed to clean up and rejuvenate the tip.

OK thats cool! type-C directly on it! very nice as the barrel jack would come out after a bit, though you can use usb to power the TS-100 with a quick charge trigger board but it would have to be 12v and over a type-A to barrel jack cable so not really fully in spec.

I have a TS 100 and love it. But i'm not sure how i feel about the TS80's dedicated use of a USB C. Since i use an old laptop power brick as a power source for the TS100. My TS100 does have a custom firmware though, which is great since i love having a boost mode for when i have ground plains that need a bit of extra heat.

can it be run with 2x9V battery in parallel? if will be VERY nice if you can test it :D

When I built a USB-C soldering iron on a lark last year I was able to get a bit over 30W out of it, and if this one is made to work down to 9v you could do PWM tricks to allow it to sink whatever power is available from the source.

I've been watching quite a lot of your videos lately and I enjoyed all of them. I am especially interested in the tool reviews since I recently got started making getting into electronics. Since I just got started I got no tools whatsoever. Since the decision for the right soldering iron almost seems to be almost religious, I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a decent soldering iron/station for beginners which is not too expensive?

Hmmm, I was going to pull the trigger on a TS100 when I moved out, but I guess I might just wait and see what price will be connected to the TS80. Metal construction is worth the wait, and the fact that it looks like something you could use to disassemble a Dalek doesn't hurt either.
