More from me: / marcoreps
This was long overdue! I am tying up some loose ends from the popular JBC soldering station video. The new design is simpler, cheaper, more efficient and equally powerful. I have learnt a lot about solid state relays in this project and I hope you will too.
Schematics and software:
drive.google.com/file/d/0B6S_...
If you are not sure whether you should build this, take a look at dangerousprototypes.com/forum/... That is a well tested, often built and much more universal soldering iron controller than mine.

When you do homebrew PCBs, it helps to put a small (0.5mm) hole in the through-hole pads - makes it much easier to hand-drill as the holes act as centering marks and help to guide the drill to the centre

2:38 Technically, both MOSFETs are turned on. The back to back configuration is necessary to also block in the reverse direction, but reverse biased MOSFETs can also "actively" conduct backwards, since they are unipolar devices. This is the same as running a very low resistance resistor in parallel to a diode: Almost no diode losses

Hi, thank you for the great job... a doubt, where is connected the pin CT (GND-green-JBC) that appears in the scheme?, on earth (PE)? I see that ACA1 and ACA2 (24V ac) are the connections of the first secondary transformer and ACB1 and ACB2 (24V ac) the second secondary, the transformer I think is a Sedlbaver Typ-NR RTO826053? Is it necessary to have a good earth in the house for it to work properly? Thank you

I'm building a project using a c245 cartridge that uses DC power because I have an old laptop power supply. It's 19.5 volts with 6.8 amps, well it just enough for the cartridge. But there are a few problems here, Marco uses AC power while I use DC power. I have a reference to Aixun T3A, it uses 1 P-channel mosfet AO4413, obviously will have to modify the design of the power supply part for the cartridge but I don't know if it is necessary to modify the temperature measurement part and code?

+Marco Reps Very nice update! I like the idea of the SSR because I'm working on some SSR right now. My questions is, do u think this SSR will work with AC current? I have ordered the photovoltiac IC's (VOM 1271) and still waiting for them. Any tips?

Definitely works with AC, that is what I am using here! If you want to make the circuit board yourself, I would recommend to use regular TO-220 MOSFETs instead of those tiny powerpak ones, because easier routing!

Looking at your schematic for the zero crossing detect. I just see you tapped off the toroid with no resistor divider. Unless I'm looking at it wrong or missing something, would the IO pin get over loaded with the 24vac sine voltage? Any help would be appreciated
@Huzaliproductions
@Huzaliproductions 2 года назад
Hey look at a casual uC inpit there are diodes to protect it. So the diode is limitng the voltage and the resistor the current. To be isolated you could use a bridge rectifier and an optovoupler.
@Huzaliproductions
@Huzaliproductions 2 года назад
Okay apparently there are optocouplers that have an ac input so you dont need a rectifier. i.e. EL 814

Hello Marco. Excellent work, and very elegant outcome. I have been a Weller user (exclusively) for over 20+ years now, and it is the first time I encounter JBC. I have seen you had/have a Weller, how do you compare it with the JBC? Especially in regards to reliability of the tips?
@reps
@reps 6 лет назад
I think it depends on the heater / tip system. A cartridge system like JBC will usually be better than a 'seperate tip' system. But Weller also makes a cartridge system now, but I have never used it. So I can't tell which one is better.
@MatejBosansky
@MatejBosansky 5 лет назад
Regarding to tip connection. In TS100 they are using custom copper connector, similar to your fuse type. Maybe you can create your own from copper sheet. in TS80 portable soldering iron is used audio jack. Find this tip type for affordable price can be difficult task. So far I found Weller WL26640 for 20e. Check for teardown of this soldering irons to see how it looks like.

Hello, Very nice work, i'm thinking of creating the same kind of soldering station using DC instead of AC maybe feeding the tip with a flyback boost input source so that the soldering station could be powered by a battery. I was wondering, if the tip is powered by a transformer and the rest of electronic by an another, they should be isolated from each other, so it should be possible to monitor the voltage on the thermocouple when powering the tips, what do you think about that theory ?
@KallePihlajasaari
@KallePihlajasaari 2 года назад
Because the thermocouple shares the one heater wire it will read totally wrong when the volt drop/resistance losses in the common wire swamp the millivolt thermocouple signal. You can use the same technique with your boost converter of disabling the power when you want to take a reading. You will need to possibly use an isolated transformer output to prevent the ground issue though.

The PCB is very special fitted to the enclosure and the parts (a wild mix of through hole and SMD) I had available, I don't think it will help. The thermistor should be at room temperature. Because I don't expect any excess heat, I have just put it directly on the PCB
