Religion and….science?! Yep, you read that right! So many people think that religion and science are incompatible, but this could not be further from the Truth.
Pope John Paul II said in his encyclical Fides et Ratio that “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth-in a word, to know himself-so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.”
Enter Fr. Robert Spitzer, an insanely smart priest, author, and president of the Magis Center. We talk today all about how science and religion are not only compatible, but also how both are essential in the order of the Universe created by God. We also talk about refuting common objections to the existence of God, the time he debated Stephen Hawking, and whether or not he believes aliens exist. 👽

I have watched so many interviews, but the level of energy and enthusiasm in this one was on a level I have not witnessed before. The energy seemed to pop out of the screen and the child-like exuberance of Chris Stefanick was great to watch. What a wonderful character Fr. Spitzer is. I must watch more of him.

The MACRO of Big Bang is all fine and good The more MICRO coziness of an earth-moon cocoon and recent findings/speculating about sentient clouds and deriving from the advancing knowledge about plasma physics and plasma astrophysics = exciting stuff!

I would be interested in an explanation as to how we go from the reasonable explanation for God (as provided in this video), to the truth of the Catholic faith. Can we arrive at that conclusion by the light of reason? How can we use the conclusions offered by Fr Spitzer to evangelise? Can we use them to evangelise?
@jcactus23
@jcactus23 4 месяца назад
@framebot, I've for a long time, didn't like the phrase, "Oh You of Little Faith", because it yelled "demeaning" to me and to the many "Me's" as a group. I use this term, at this time, with you, as describing one person, without any demeaning in any way, one who I perceive as not having totally believing, and/or still need some proof before stating "yes Lord, I believe". For my journey, that moment came when one of my original mentors said, Jack, "Faith should comes before knowledge", not "knowledge should come before faith". I am so delighted and excited about this presentation by Fr. Spitzer because I don't find it as a mitigation or placation of my doubts, but as a fulfillment of my beliefs. God bless you, my friend. Great interview, thank you. I’d gently disagree about the likelihood that we’d need to evangelize or baptize aliens though. Aquinas said the Incarnation of the Son does not limit Him to one species. If God created intelligent life elsewhere, then the Fermi Paradox implies they live too far away to ever communicate with us, which would be part of the divine plan, and God has a relationship with them that does not involve us, at least not in this life.

God is all about unity. I can't believe He'd create sentient beings with whom we'd never have communion. Also, why should THEY be punished for OUR fall? Unjust.

You can't argue with an ashiest about the existence of God. It is absolutely so much more scientific to teach that the Universe created itself than to teach that God always existed. You can not deceive yourselves about that. The science is there.

Couldn't that alien, with intelligence and free will, be a demon? Why would it necessarily have a redeemable soul? Fr. Spitzer implied this is the only possibility and didn't address the demon possibility.

I wonder whether the good intuition that bubbles over here should be re-framed. The 14:00 “prior to the beginning of time” does not really make sense. There’s nothing “before” the first moment of time. Moreover, modern science’s understanding of physical “movement” in time is precisely that, within time. It does not, on its own, justify inferences to “outside linear time” (17:40), let alone “before” it. Rather, as you do allude to, we know from our own intelligent and evaluative creativity that finite unities, like the whole cosmos, come from creative mind.

I'm morbidly sleep deprived, so I might not be grasping the fullness of your remarks (additionally, I'm listening to the video at 1.5x the regular speed because I am in a hurry to go to sleep, lol) but perhaps what Fr. meant by "prior to the beginning" was prior to the creation of man, since we humans need to operate within the construct of "time." Prior to man's existence there would not have been a need to quantify what we know as time. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for the engagement but Fr Spritzer is clear that there was "nothing before the beginning .. and so the nothing could not move it itself from nothing to something." But movement needs time. @@maureensullivan8898

Yes I noticed that glitch too, but you can rest assured that Spitzer of course knows there is no "prior" outside of time. Prior in the ontological sense would be more precise. These types of shows as good and energizing as they are, by their nature are exceedingly brief and over-condensed. You can't do justice, even at the popular level, to the topics touched on here in 25 minutes and sometimes too in the whirlwind elements of precision might be lost. If you want to really get Spitzer listen to some of his longer format talks, or better yet read at least one of his many books - the one discussed here would be a good place to start.

For some reason the last part of my reply was eliminated... so to continue - you can't do justice here, even at the popular level, with such complex topics. I recommend listening to some of Spitzer's longer talks or better reading 1 of his many books. The 1 discussed here would be a good one to start with.

The problem here is with a consistently great show like Chris has, none of us are expecting this to happen, so we don’t have our Advil ready, all along not realizing the show isn’t going to turn around eventually and have a point to it. It didn’t happen often, but even Tony Gwynn had an off day at the plate.

A person can believe whatever they want to believe. They can easily believe untrue thing, just to make themselves feel better. No matter how uncomfortable it might be, I would rather know what is true. Faith is the most dishonest way to know anything.

Sweetheart, only the goofiest of modern atheists define “faith” the way you appear to. Faith is an integral part of science, too. Faith, properly defined, is the adoption of the best possible explanation, using logic and reason, given all available evidence Are you one of those who is so married to their own belief system that you didn’t even watch this video?
@lukemarple

I can't help but see the premise at the very begining of this video to assume that things are "just matter" as misleading and disturbing. I think it is enough to understand that we exist. To say that someone knows what is going on is hilarious. We have all been taught by the previous idiot. Why do I need to beleive in your God to love the universe? I don't need a priest to recogonize you as my brother. I see you in myself. To quote the enlighted Hopkins: "Each Mortal thing does one thing and the same, deals out that being in doors each one dwells, selves goes itself, myself it speaks and spells, crying what i do is me. for that i came." Chris, no one should make assumptions about what anyone truly desires and/or wants. Don't use it as the reason for your beleif in God. (Rewatch your own logic and words at the beggining of this video and pay attention to the assumptions you make.) The idea of a Creator is an anthropormorphic understanding of our reality. The reason WE identify with the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit is because those religious ideas spring directly from what it means to be and understand the human experience in this reality. But that is not proof of a reality of a creator? If 2024 has taught us anything. Identification does not = Creation. In fact, Identification creates conflict. Reality is. We live together in it. Lets start being freinds instead of making distinctions between us. I am a human person ready and willing to love you as a human person. Together lets build a better world. Science is grossly misrepresented in this converstation. Science is a best guess so far. Thats it. That's all any of us got. All that can come from nothing is all that is.

I definitely believe in God, but I don't know whether there's an afterlife. I'd rather there not be an afterlife because there would be no hell, except this one, which is temporary. People are persuaded to join religious groups out of fear that they won't go to hell. If there's no heaven, I'm OK with that. You weren't upset before you existed, so why would you be upset if things go back to the way they were before? People say, "I want to have a legacy," but that's just egotistical. If you're Catholic, then you probably believe in purgatory, which makes more sense because people aren't completely good or completely evil. Protestants say that Catholics are going to hell. There are religions that believe all Christians will go to hell because they worship a man who told people he was God's son. They think that there is no Holy Trinity, and that there is only one deity. I'll admit that the concept of hell is frightening, but there are thousands of reasons why we could end up there. Maybe it's because we worship too many Gods, or not enough Gods. It could be because you ate the wrong kind of food, wore the wrong fabrics, or had a lustful thought about someone else's wife.
