There are many legitimate situations to use proxies. But there’s a fine line between a high quality proxy, and a fake.

I agree with your point about super high quality proxies inching into the territory of being a counterfeit, but I think it all comes down to the player and their intent. I got really high quality MTG proxies because I play over Webcam with friends and want the image recognition software to be able to register my proxies.

I can accept new players with proxys of commons and Rares in a local Armory event, if its fine with all players. That makes it easier, and cheaper, for new players to play the game and expand the community. 😊

Idk as long as it makes no pretense of being real and it is not an official event, I don't care.

I'm working on upf decks for at home play and will be using proxies to fill out some of the decks. My plan is to use a totally different card pattern/border so that it's clear that these are proxies. I'm mostly using it for cards like the fables and the special promo heroes that are hundreds of dollars.

I run a few high-quality proxies for pricey cards I only own one copy of and don't want to switch it between decks-or for prohibitively expensive cards for cEDH decks (i.e., reserved list cards) and I ALWAYS include real cards as backups in the deckbox I can swap in if anyone's not cool with the proxies. I've never personally had anyone say they won't play against proxies, but if we're playing with any prizes on the line, I can spend 2 min swapping in the 3-5 proxies if necessary and boom-we're off. Either way, being transparent goes a loooong way.

Currently I have a template that I put card images into which adds an obvious striped border and print that out. Only works for sleeved decks, of course.

To your concluding thoughts. We'll never stop people from making fake cardboard It's cardboard. A) there is little else as easy to make/fake B) the price of certain cardboard often justifies the creation of proxies in my opinion C) there exists anti counterfeit measures on real cards.. Unless you are trying to match those, I think your proxie is harmless. D) real official pieces are always more desirable therfore selling the counterfeit as a proxie, since it won't pass for real, means it's doomed to sell for pennies on the dollar. Making Proxies is the everyman's path to experience more expensive depths of any CCG, which as an industry standard now, are all pretty expensive for ink on cardboard. This is all coming from guy who is deep invested in real flesh and blood.

Proxy’s as placeholders is absolutely fine, again, as long as they are obvious proxies. No way should they be used in any event that has prizing of any kind

In my opinion, a proxy crosses the line of being a fake, the second you try to pass it off a a real card. Whether willingly or not. Just be up front about it. I have no issues with people in social settings having proxies for pieces they will never be able to buy, to try the full complexity of the game. I prefer the real thing, and where I can't afford it I substitute with what I have. I haven't made a proxy for FAB. Not for moral reasons or because I can afford five copies of Fyendal's spring tunic. I'm just a casual player and commoner is really good format for that.

our store is real nice about allowing proxies for expensive cards in the favor of having good matches. If its a RTN night its a little different but regular armories we'd rather folks have a fun match up. Sometimes certain cards just cant be replaced in a deck
@hamsandwich6685
@hamsandwich6685 Год назад
I'm trying to play the game, and I care about how cards look. I'm for proxies. Don't use them at events, or I don't even use them outside my house, but it allows me to enjoy the game deeper. Almost any proxy I've made of a legendary or a certain card, eventually I actually pulled the real version from packs. I'd rather have and use the real cards, but life is too short to get caught up on hundreds of $ for cardboard. I wouldn't foist my habit on to other players, unless they already express how they like or use proxies themselves. Even though I think this way. I'm the only one at the local store that isn't bringing proxies to the store. It doesn't bother me, it's actually making me a better player because I face everyone with a proxies tunic or crown now.

I like your take on this pulling my 2 cnc out of Ira to put it in the emperor gets old But when I sit down to play someone I am playing the cards that I have. not the cards that I want to have when I’m casually playing some one I would expect the same. I don’t own every single card I want to use but I’m not going to get fake cards to increase my win rate to play vrs my friends. That is clearly rude and unfriendly.

I always proxy out expensive cards for Cube play, and i prefer to have them look as close to the real thing as possible for consistancy sake. I have no desire to pay for real cards at that point. Luckily so many real cards cost less than a "legit" proxy.

Back when I used to play Netrunner, everybody proxied all the time. But they were always pretty obvious. I used to just color print off the card and stick it in front of a clearly non-playable card. That was not a collectible game though... All in all, I kinda like the restrictions the valuation of cards make, and I prefer to play in an environment that generally doesn't use them. That being said, our locals often will ok a proxy, for new players, on certain cards. Us 'old-timers' don't necessarily get that benefit though. Again, *that* being said, we often sometimes cut each other slack if someone just couldn't find their copies of whatever card... I think the key is open communication, similar to the point you make.

I usually proxy with the card print (I make a sort of "extended border" to have people know it's a proxy) for cards I share from decks or I already paid but they are still shipping. I rarely, but sometimes do, proxy card I don't own just to test a deck.
@nestalesne8024

Personally my first deck was 100% proxies, printed in a blank sheet of paper with mtg card back because I used transparent sleeves and didn’t have enough FaB cards to do the all deck. If a « good » proxy is a the worst looking of all, I guess people making fun of my proxies means that they were great proxies 😂

Go Briar! 99% of my “proxies” are all the extra copies of E-Strike and CnC like everyone else lol. And by proxy I mean a post-it note with chicken scratch writing. I should probably try printing something greyscale like you exampled, but I’m lazy and the bright post it color on the card face image helps me immediately identify which cards are proxied as I thumb through the deck when I need to replace them with the real copies. I used to print color proxies for MTG EDH decks back in the day - my play group didn’t care one lick about proxies and the color made them look nicer when playing, but that got just about as expensive as buying some cards lolololol.

@GeeJayGamesOfficial

I wonder whether "need" your proxy to look good is the right word. In a lot of cases it will be quicker and easier to print out a "proxy" unedited, eg, looking like the real thing, and if that proxy is just going to be used at home, and no-where else, I think a lot of people would, 1, like how it looks, and 2, not be bothered to edit it. I've not done this yet, but who knows maybe I will in the future, and I am supposing this would be frowned upon by most TCG players. - One day I'm going to want to play FaB with my friend Charlie who has never played, and I think I might just print out all the CC decks we will use, with Fables, Legendaries etc, we won't sleeve the cards, we'll play at my kitchen table, or outside, let the cards get beat up like we did playing MTG in the nineties, maybe even throw them on the BBQ when we're done for the day. To do this non-proxy would cost us thousands and thousands of pounds for the experience, in which case, we would not do it, and we'd probably play a board game instead.

I don't like that a game is "I spent money on cards so my deck is better than yours" but it is disrespectful to those who have committed to the game when they have an expensive deck playing against something someone printed out.
