Checking out the Paul Reed Smith 509 guitar this time around. What a stunner...it's a 2020 model, with the upgraded nitro finish, TCI pickup adjustment, phase 3 tuners, gen 3 bridge, rosewood neck, and a CRAZY top. This guitar is unique because it sports a unique HSH pickup setup made from five single coils. Two extra switches let you tap the "humbuckers" giving you a huge range of versatile tones to pick from.

Every PRS I've ever played on sounded amazing. You can never go wrong with PRS imo. Great review; I've never heard of this guitar before this video.

It's a unique one for sure. Best of the best build quality, but you'll have to decide between a classic tone and a guitar that can do just about everything. Decisions, decisions!

Yeah. They are riiiight on the edge of a little too fancy. But the curves of the carved top, the birds, the hardware...man. Just beautiful, stunning guitars.

very cool! defiantly up there with the modern eagle v in terms of versatility . i have modern eagle v wood library on the way.a 2024 model with mahogany body, a crazy faded blue jean quilted maple top,a insanely flamed roasted satin finish maple neck and a zircote fretboard with abalone birds and a stunning brown/burgundy case. never thought i would be able to get a prs but here we are...can't wait!

Really dig your videos and have been watching ya for some time now. I know you have owned a few kiesels in the past but it would be interesting if you did a “dream build” and just put together a mock order of everything you’d ever want in one. Every little detail that you could have if you had no budget. I’d just be interested in seeing what you would pick if you could have the fanciest and nicest that you could imagine haha. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think you’ve done a video quite like that? Rock on man!🤘🏼

Thanks man. That would be fun! I guess there are a couple directions that could go. Most expensive/fanciest thing isn't always the best though. My Suhr modern is close to perfect as far as what I'd pick. Maybe a tweak here or there, but I think a roasted flamed neck with a simple body with nice paint is about as cool as it gets. That said, I don't think a rosewood neck with a quilted redwood top would hurt either :)

Brazilian Rosewood tops cannot be taken out of the US without an approval permit. It is basically the only wood for finished instruments that CITES still bans. If you don’t intend to leave the US it’s a beautiful wood. I had to return mine due to shipping it to Japan. It is engraved on the back of the headstock to not be sold outside of the US. Although the odds of some custom official looking at one is slim, I wouldn’t chance having my $5k guitar confiscated. Just FYI. I ended up with a lovely Tiger Wood maple cut.

Hey Brandon, thanks man. Doing decently well. Hope things are solid there too. Yeah this is a crazy looking guitar, and I get that it might be a little over the top for some. Either way, cool concept here. I'd imagine when playing live, the ability to switch before each song and have it locked into being a 5-way of HSH/HSS/SSH/SSS would be super helpful. Neat idea!

Wish the rosewood necks weren't so tough to find on them (without spending a fortune). Would like to get another one down the road, but apparently rosewood necks are now private stock only. Boo! Guess I'll be shopping used.

Although the 509 is a little "more premium" than the 594, the 594 is the one that really stuck for me. After playing it 5 minutes I knew I was selling the R9. It's an absolute knockout.

Really cool setup on there, right? One piece body, two piece flame top. Pretty unique idea and covers so much ground. I dono if it sounds THAT much like a strat, but its close enough to get you into the ballpark on just about everything. And yeah dude, neckthru aries is gonna rock it! I'll probably order one eventually, but haven't decided on what I'm looking for yet.

Me too, Jeff! The 594 has been a perfect replacement for my Les Paul. Stunning looks, A+ playability, but most importantly, the tone is exactly what I was looking for. Love it!

Yeah I feel like the Cu24 covers enough ground where I don't really find myself wanting more. The 509 does a bunch of extra stuff I'd probably not end up using that often anyhow.

Incidentally, as I have said in Discord too, I tend to reach for my other PRS too when I want a specific Humbucker sound too - whether its more Vintage (594), Classic (Special) or Modern (Cu24) so I tend to go for this if I want more SC tele/stratty tone but will happily use the HB's if I happen to be holding the 509 and want a 'general' HB...

@@TheGuitarPit As I said, sometimes you have to take what colour is available if you want a specific thing or a great price. I had to settle for Charcoal Cherry Burst for my Special or miss out on getting one as no Fire Red Bursts were in the UK and no more orders were being taken...

Nice demo , my problem I can’t decide which PRS I want 408 , DGT , 24-08 , Studio , and now the 509 , Which I really like, super versatile , but not sure how I feel about the Blacked out pickups , they remind me of EMG’s but they also make the guitar stand out , anyway another great demo for the average Joe like myself

Awesome. With all those other PRS blues I was waiting for a blue crab and there it is. Something looks almost raw and unfinished with those 509 pickup covers. But they sound great. Agree with another comment here about the darkness, wonder whether that comes from the Brazilian. Probably my nicest guitar is a classical that’s Brazilian back/sides, very dark sound. Anyway, after having a prejudice against PRS as déclassé art pieces, your c24 refin story got me looking into the brand again and I’m loving my 594. Okay, enough stream of consciousness.

The look of the pickups really grew on me. They look modern and interesting. I'd imagine they'd look REALLY cool on something like a Suhr modern. I get that PRS can be dismissed as art but I think the hardware, build quality, and pickups speak for themselves. They really are top top top notch. The 594 I picked up right after this has been a game changer. It plays like the 509 but sounds like a Gibson R9. Hard to argue with it.

Aaah, the 509, coolest Prs alongside the hollowbody Having played a guitar with a brazilian rosewood neck, all of it. I am not sure it is worth it but it felt extremely nice.

Yeah it's cool for style points, but I don't know if I'd ask to have it added to a custom build at an upcharge. Regular rosewood seems fine to me :)

Went with blue for a change, eh? 😆 I'm just morning ya! Blue is always my go-to aswell, be it lake placid on my Fender... Pelham Blue on my Gibson...or faded whale blue on my dream PRS, yet to be acquired. I had to force myself to break the pattern last guitar, and wpnow I've got a she'll pink superstrat!

I have a CE24 and i love it but the only thing is the humbuckers are just a bit heavy sounding for me. Are the pickups on the 509 a little softer sounding, or pickup/coil taps combo that give more of a soft/clear humbucking sound?

I love the 85/15's on the CE24 but if you want lower output, maybe look at the 594 or DGT models? I don't think the 509 is much different than the 85/15 except they have more noise and options.

All is well! And yeah, fun to hold but sad to see them go! This thing rocked, but the 594 is the perfect R9 replacement, and the other one had to go. In a perfect world I'd get a 594 with the specs of the 509 (rosewood neck, crazy body wood, etc) but I think I'll survive!

The heel design is to make it closer to the sound of a singlecut, not a strat.

Fantastic review. That guitar does not need to be versatile. I like the "who cares" commentary about neck heel. More brass on the saddles is great. 17:20 this is what I thought about my old Custom 24. There was nothing spectacular about any of the pickup positions. What if everyone embraced the sound of a split humbucker instead of always comparing it to a Fender? I love that sound. Beautiful guitar, Chris. Thanks. Really great review.

Thanks Rick, well said. No need for comparisons, the pickups are plenty good on their own. They do their own thing, and I think it'd be a great tool for live players or someone who just wants one guitar to cover a lot of ground. Not to mention it's just an absolute joy to play. The rosewood neck is so soft and pleasant. Great guitar!

Unlike you, sadly, it will be the SE import as my first entry into PRS. That one you have is beyond Legit. If I had my choice it would be that model. Hahahah. Peace brother. Stay you! PS. Sweet! That focusrite will do you well. Have you looked at the PRS 594 S2? They're about $1.1k new for the thinline, if you find a vendor that will cut you a deal. That's a -lot- of guitar for the money. Some of the SE's get up into the $800+ range, so it's worth considering if you can stretch. Ditto to the CE24's. They pop up used at around $1200 occasionally.

Really hard to compare to be honest. Totally different guitars. Typically, the PRS guitars I've had have better pickups, unique hardware, finer woods, better finishes, and have been more resonant. They are also ~3x more expensive. That said, I still love Kiesels and don't think there is anything wrong with them. Just not sure I'd be comparing them to a $5800 guitar.

That neck joint would be because there would be a short neck tenon because of them squeezing 3 pickups, with space to pick around the single coil. As a result,the neck joint is like an SG : kinda flimsy. They wouldn't have added that clunky heel unless they needed it for stability. it just goes to show in the world of guitars, you get nothing for free! You make one adjustment to a guitar...and you pay for it somewhere else...always!

I believe it does. It felt a little thicker but I no longer have it to compare. This thread seems to think 513s (similar to 509s) are a tiny bit thicker than a Cu24: forums.prsguitars.com/threads/prs-body-thickness-the-definitive-guide.15022/

I really doubt it, unless you want to destroy the value. It's probably possible to squash something in there or do some routing, but it'd look horrible and wreck it. I think you're stuck with what you get in this one :)

Watching this, I am wondering why you didn't just sell 5-6 guitars in the background rack and keep this :') Edit: Neck in single coil mode was surprisingly dark.

Ha, it would have had to be nearly everything in the rack! Half of them aren't worth a damn thing, and the other half I enjoy :) Too much work to pack and ship em all anyhow haha.
