In this video I take you step by step through the process of registering your songs with PRS For Music and PPL. These two organisations collect royalties for song writers and musicians in The UK. If you live outside of The UK, there will be equivalent bodies in existence in your country.

what about if we are not registered with PPL but we got a first registrant code (5 first characters).. can we just make up adding the last 7 characters in the PRS registration page? Can the song earn 'royalties" or earn in any way if it's not registered inside the PPL website or the ISRC is embedded in the song file?
@bartekpiwonskiofficial

If you are in the UK, PPL is the sole agency for ISRC's in the UK. So if you want to generate your own ISRC codes that will be internationally recognised, the only way to do it is to be registered with PPL.

Hi Bartek ,I was wondering if you could help me ?I have a few questions regarding PPL AND PRS . I joined PRS over 10 years ago and only registered as a writer as I was only singing , I did not pay a member fee at that time, In them years I began to produce my own music via home studio and signed to DISTROKID. Going in blind I released a few tracks and registered them on my PRS account thinking this was enough , I have realised I need to do this the right way as there has been a lot of materiel been done and released with the incorrect methods and would love your advice on how to go forward in the right way please. @bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial 9 месяцев назад
Hi. You don't upload actual tracks to PRS or PPL. Your songs are tracked via their ISRC codes. However, for better coverage, especially in international territories, PRS has recently partnered up with Soundmouse. Now here you upload your mp3's for tracking purposes. Check out my other video on this new partnership: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZNqcdehxY-w.html I will also be publishing a video on what the registration process with Soundmouse looks like and how to upload your tracks in the near future.

I have a question, once your song is fully registered with all those codes, and you post your songs on youtube? how does youtube recognise that they are your songs and they are copyright protected? do you place that code also on youtube so it links this work with your username?
@bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial Месяц назад
@LATINONUEVAERAOFFICIAL This is slightly complicated and it depends on whether you post the songs by yourself or go through a distributor. When you go through a distributor, your ISRC codes are automatically assigned to your songs and you will get paid when they are streamed on RU-vid Music. Also, some distributors like Tunecore offer RU-vid content id within their plans so you can get paid that way as well. Even if you post them on your own channel for example.
@bartekpiwonskiofficial

@bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial Месяц назад
@LATINONUEVAERAOFFICIAL PPL deal with broadcast royalties from your masters and if you have an officially released video, like on TV but not your own video on your own RU-vid channel. PRS deal with song writing and publishing royalties that you can earn 2 ways - while performing live or when other people perform your songs live or on recordings. Or when your music is played in public or broadcast on the radio/TV or when your songs are synched in games, films etc.. MCPS, which is joined up with PRS, pays mechanical royalties for sales of physical copies as well as online streams. I don't think that there is a way of getting paid directly through PRS for posting your own music on your RU-vid channel. Unless your channel is monetised, the best way to get paid for that is through RU-vid content id option.

@bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial 2 месяца назад
@DRZ_UK In theory they should not have any rights to your performance and mechanical royalties. Unless they had some input in the song writing process. However, it all depends on the contract you have with them so it's worth checking. Also, some labels have publishing arms and, if they manage your publishing, they will take a cut of those royalties. @bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial Год назад
Hi Remiee. The layout of an ISRC code is as follows: The first two letters identify the country where you are based, for example UK. The next three letters are your unique registrant code. Those five initial characters are assigned to you by PPL so when creating your ISRC codes, you simply need to put them at the beginning of your code. The next two numbers represent a year in which a song is released, for example 23. The remaining five numbers are called a designation code but effectively they form some kind of a catalogue number. The most logical way to go about them is to match them to the order of your releases in a particular year. For example 00001, 00002 and so on. So a complete ISRC code will look something like this: UKABC2300001. Here is a link to the guidance issued by PPL: www.ppluk.com/membership/more-information/isrc/

Silly question, there are some songs that are unfinished but I want to credit the artists and composers, will they get paid based off any iteration of the song or any versiom, because I have a feeling i’ll end up rerecording the song. So does the copyright license apply to the song in it’s entirety or every component of it like the lyrics, the musc, the singing does that make any damn sense
@bartekpiwonskiofficial
@bartekpiwonskiofficial Год назад
Hello there. You've asked a very good question. I am actually preparing more of a series on these subjects as I get quite a lot of 'supplementary' questions to this video. Firstly, you own a copyright the moment you have created something regardless of the fact whether it's registered or not. Of course registering it helps to prove it and it allows you to claim royalties in certain scenarios. To answer your question, it is important to distinguish between writers or composers and musicians who recorded the song. If you wrote a song with other people, for example you wrote the music and someone else wrote the lyrics, you both have a copyright to that song and can claim 50% each from any performing or mechanical royalties. That's the composition. Now when it comes to recording multiple versions of the same composition, different musicians could take part in recording these different versions and therefore they could only claim recording royalties for a version that they are on. And this is where the difference is in registering a song with PRS vs PPL. With PRS you register a composition, including the lyrics but with PPL you register each individual recorded, and typically released version of that composition. However, for someone else to be able to claim any of these royalties they must register themselves with PRS, PPL or both as well. That's different from registering the songs. I hope all this makes sense.
@Nottz4Lyf18
@Nottz4Lyf18 Год назад
@@bartekpiwonskiofficial thanks for getting back to me i’ve been going around in loops, generally I write lyrics and sing and some one else makes the music but I hate waiting around for them to finish so I like having lyrics copyrighted just in case any of the other parties abandon the project but use my work for anything else (obviously without the prs or ppl i thought i’d get no notifcation of it’s use because it was never registered if that makes sense), the song was never completed so i never had it on prs or ppl so they can use it without me ever knowing about it if that makes sense. Currently signed up to distrokid but they don’t publish or cover tv, radio or live performance, do I need PRS as well as Distrokid and PPL on top of those two, or PRS and MCPS because that seems similar to distrokid, anymore help would be greatly appreciated you have earned a sub sir

@@mehranmosaddeq It depends. Do you write songs or only perform songs that other people wrote? If you write or co-write songs then you register them with PRS as your works. PPL deals with your rights as a performer. Think about it that way. You write a song but then also perform it whilst recording it. You are on that recording as a performer. Once your song is used somewhere, you are owed royalties both as a song writer and a performer. PPL deals with the actual recording whilst PRS deals with composition. If you are a song writer and a performer, I recommend registering with both bodies. If you are only a performer, just register with PPL.
