My two favorite guitars are my SG and my Silver Sky. I feel so inspired when I play both. That’s what matters. Not price, or name...it’s what you feel when you pick up your guitar and play.

SilverSky is a really amazing guitar no doubt but you can't beat a CustomShop Strat that plays like this one. John Mayer knows it, he just decided he could make more money with a new company. Who knows what happened with him and Fender but he still holds his Black Strat as his #1 guitar. You find a Strat that you connect with and has that special tone and you can not replace it PERIOD!!!! I have a sonic blue 60's CustomShop that I have tried to top and I can't. After 7 years its still my #1!If you have been fortunate enough to get a CustomShop Strat then you know. Not hating or biased just being honest here.
I think just A strat. I came upon this strat in the used section of a guitar center, never played anything but strats. This one 60th anniversary 60's , with vintage noiseless pups. I literally had to stop playing it because when I was, I could visibly see people like trying to look at the guitar then at me! Had a couple people recognize that it was a great guitar. Acoustically the loudest one I've ever had. The silver sky is intriguing though.
The shape is ergonomjc genius. Leo got it right over 60 years ago. PRS just took the shape and made a custom guitar for a famous guitarist after the disintegration of his previous business relationship. PRS make great guitars. Buy them or don't.
The Knaggs has a lovely boingy attack that is also more piano-like rather than tinny or sharply metallic. It's gorgeous, makes the others sound like comparable toys.
PRS sounds amazing. It's like a strat, but refined in every way. The Tone, the look, the feel. The main problem is that people who are diehard Fender loyalists are never going to like it no matter how good it is.
fantastic playing on this review Jamie! Not sure if it's just my ears but i think that the slightly hotter output on the prs gives( particularly the neck and middle pickups) a slight undertone of a humbucker particularly on what you were playing.
Great video. The PRS doesn’t do it for me at all, especially considering what Fender do for substantially less, but great to see you three guys talking and playing. Really good review format, keep it up.
I think you are hearing with your eyes. Not all Fenders play great, you have to find the right one. The PRS is consistently good. The idea was out of 100 Fenders, a handful are masterpieces. Every PRS feels the same across the board.
Just get a classic vibes 60’s by squier same neck and almost same weight, the neck pickup sounds stunning for the price. Just change the tuners. You can find them for $2-300 used.
I’ve been waiting for this Guitarist review. I like the Tone Lounge format. Excellent review - fair and honest from a guitarist point of view without all the politics. Could you share what the amp settings were? I’m going to listen again but as intriguing as the PRS is the Fender sounded better to me. In looking more closely at the PRS headstock it looks like the same Fender taper before transitioning to the PRS shape. I wish you held the two headstocks side by side or one over the other. All in all PRS has built another excellent guitar which will keep Gibson and Fender on their toes.
the fender has that typical fender vintage tone. the prs is more smoothed out, les off that vintage sparkle the fender oozes. Two great guitars, as a traditionalist I prefer the fender strat
Gentleman thank you for the very good interview that's a great comparison between the two guitars. How PRS don't sound like a fender. They both sound great.
One thing noticed by the guys at Andertons TV is that the pole pieces of the pickups follow the curvature of the neck, unlike their asymmetrical arrangement on a standard strat.
More sustain and clarity with each note on the PRS the fender is warmer and has that classic strat sound it all depends on the sound you are looking for ! I personally like the PRS here !
I have a maple FB SS. Absolutely love it, other than some minor aesthetic gripes (3 on a side headstock and bird inlays look silly on a strat). Also should come with a nice hardshell case instead of a made in China gig bag
I've been watching this demo for the past 20 minutes, and the time on the clock still reads 12:05. I must be in a time warp from all these great tones.
The price of the Silver Sky is actually £ 2,299 so I’m guessing the Custom Shop Strat is at least £ 1,000 more. And I don’t hear that much of a price difference. To me the Silver Sky sounds less dull. John Mayer called it a High Definition Strat-style guitar and imho he’s absolutely right. Well done PRS!
I think you cant compare different tones matching with price tags. Tone differents cant be measured in price my friend. If it has an different tone, there has to be a different price. If you are happy with the tone of the lower priced guitar than thats good news. If you like the sound of the other guitar you have to pay for the that type of sound. You dont pay because of differences. But thats my opinion.
N Hoekstra It wasn’t my decision but that of Guitarist Magazine to compare the Silver Sky against the Custom Shop Strat. And they had the price wrong by £ 500! Next time watch the video first and then read the comments my friend.
Hi chaps. I don't think you realised that you had the volume pot rolled off a bit on the Fender - that could be why the PRS instantly sounded brighter... I have no problem with PRS making this guitar, I'm all for anyone making their version of a Strat but I'm not liking the sound from this new PRS - it has an "already-produced" kind of tone (if you know what I mean by that) and not as much character in the tone as the Fender. Just my humble opinion... BTW, that Knaggs sounds awesome :-)
And how did you see or know the vol pot was down ? The SS has a powerful output (I've played it). Sounds better than any Fender I've owned or played in 20 years.
Meh. Sounds great to me. It definitely sounded the brightest and clearest. The Knaggs and the strat both kinda sounded muddier, sitting in a more low middy space. I am sure an eq would shift things, but the PRS sounded the best in my ears. Especially in a mix seeing how clear it sounded in this particular demo.
@19:06 min ... need to correct that quote, PRS does shafted headstocks on mahogany necks - I have a Vela with a shafted neck. It's probably an S2 series thing.

PRS definitely has more overall definition and balance through the pickup positions. The hybrid design of the PRS headstock on a strat body is not a winner.
I am by no means an expert on setting up guitars, I do my best with what I have but I swear the intonation is off on the red strat. I'd rather have the strat but the prs sounds fucking beautiful

The biggest reason for not having a backplate is to silence the springs with your clothes right?I have watched all the videos About this guitar,look and sound great IMO,and nobody review it with a floating trem.I just wonder if it is impossible to have it floating ala fender trem or if it is a universal law to not change anything when it comes to the silver sky?
Whilst I think PRS have exceptional quality I have never got on with them. I know this is a strat but it doesn't sit well with me. Honestly I'd rather have the real thing. Or that Knaggs! I always love it when the choptank comes out for the Blues Headlines.
3 great guitars each with a unique sound. just a matter of preference i suppose. I will say I don't like that greenback speaker in the Friedman. It's too muddy for my taste. I play a Jensen Blackbird in a custom Trutone 1x12 cab and an old radio that was converted into a 10w amp with some mesa boogie tubes in it...extremely clear and uncolored sound.
I’m kind of indifferent about this PRStrat but generally it seems that it should be more frequently compared to a Fender Elite Strat. Old school starting point with more modern appointments and whatnot.

Ariff Johanis Ahmad PRS spent two years on development of this guitar. Primarily because John had to figure out which specs he was happy with while playing it and being on tour all last year. People are making it sound worse than it is. Also he wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel. Just something that the world could easily get while getting the vintage sought after tones without the heftier price tags.
Yeah absolutely. Who could even think that there would be other things than body shape when designing guitar and infact, it's one of the least time intensive parts of the design. Also said strange folk could think that when designing a signature guitar for a busy artist, simply doing the endless prototypes might take time until the player is happy with the product. Such strange mindset those people have. (this is obviously sarcasm you dumbfuck)

I'm confused if that's the case, the only thing i sorta could understand was that the outcry was due to an "original" guitar brand doing a strat knockoff when they are known for their own designs.
Being a blatant strat copy, PRS and Mayer probably know people will expect it to be able to take a beating and still sound roses, hence the scarf joint (making the angled headstock far more stable presumably).
The blues junior woody doesn't sound anything like a regular blues junior. I've played 2 woody's and they are darker voiced, the cabinet resonates completely different, the reverb reacts complitely different.
@@joshua0226 Not only the cabinet, but the amp itself is darker voiced. So, I connected the Woody to a seperate cabinet and compared to a regular Blues Junior connected to that same other cabinet, and the amp itself is darker voiced.
@@thatguy9528 nope, I’m good and so are plenty of reviewers here. Clean sounds like crap. If you want clean, here is some advice. Get a guitar with EMG’s and a decent solid state amp. You’ll have all the clean you need. Oh, and name one famous guitar player who regularly plays on a clean amp.
Tried to listen with my best headphones - to my ears the Strat just sounds better. Absolutely love John Mayer and would love to let that bias me, but this PRS does not hit it for me. I am sure its a quality build guitar, with great playability, but the “mojo” tone is just not there :-(
yup... the strat has a warmth and clarity in the midrange that gives it that "mojo". The Silver Sky just sounds weedy, harsh and thin. it's actually pushing the amp to breakup in a rather non-musical way. Things that were perfectly designed in the beginning need not be fixed.
I like the knaggs the best but what do i know im a lp guy and prs has a good. Copy of that to. Y'all buy what you like and can afford. My strat copy coast 100$ and i like it better than most strats.
They are different period. But you can be sure of the fact John Meyer has and will not be trashing his Outstanding collection of Fender Stratocasters that is for certain.🤔
Why were the comments speculating about how well the Silver Sky was selling deleted? Great demo as always. That Knaggs is intriguing and sounds great! Isn’t it ironic that Joe Knaggs was a designer at PRS. Nice take on a triple single coil.
The issue with PRS is that it has it’s own identity in the guitar world. John Mayer is a strat guy and so PRS compromised it’s design to create a strat for John. This PRS is a strat with a PRS headstock. There are companies that create strats or superstrats copies, but that’s what they started doing from the beginning; example:Suhr. PRS broke away from the norm and created there own recipe for guitar manufacturing, and in this design prove once again that the strat is the one of the best. PRS should have told John to use their design or stay with Fender or go somewhere else. I’m waiting for the day that John returns to Fender because you never forget your first love.
Pete D I saw JM on Sun at O2. He played the PRS all night apart from on “Slow Dancing......” when he played his old sunburst Fender Strat. The sound of the Fender was so much much better than the prs. It had character & was softer & smoother. The prs was obviously very powerful but didn’t have as much character as the Fender.
I think this guitar sounds fine. So does my squire strat. It maybe (must) plays great but I have not played the silver sky. And am I the only one that thinks that you can make a cheap guitar sound great through a good effects pedal board? $2300.00 is for people that would buy a range rover. Mostly show and little go for the money. With all that said, I liked this video as it did provide me the information necessary as I would like to play this guitar to see what all the buzz is about because I just don’t get it. Spellcheck gets me every time. SQUIER.
