This is a demo of a PRS SE Torero in which I have swapped the pickups to the Dimarzio John Petrucci (Crunch Lab-DP228 and Liquifire-DP227) set.
My apologies for the horrible lighting and the misspelling of "humbucker" as "humucker" when demonstrating the various pickup selector positions... the struggle is real, folks!

I just got a PRS SE Standard 24, what an amazing guitar, I just want to swap out the bridge pickup, the neckpickup is amazing and warm. I have got the Dimarzio Super Distortion in another guitar and LOVE that pickup, this "Dimarzio John Petrucci" sounds good too, I wonder which one will be best for more extreme music and heavy metal ?

Hm... Hard to say. The Super distortion has a hair more output but also more bass, slightly more low mid, slightly less high mid, and more treble (if DiMarzio's EQ curves are accurate). Unfortunately, I no longer have both sets of pickups to try a direct comparison--nothing wrong with either of them--just needed to do a bit of a "gear purge" a few years back for various reasons. 😅 Having said that, I had the Crunch Lab in the guitar show in this video and the Super Distortion in a Japanese Les Paul Penco copy from the 70's, and while different guitars (with different scale lengths, tone woods, etc.) can make difference in the perceived sound of a given pickup, the EQ curves seem to line up with what I remember. The Crunch Lab seemed to have a more, tight, mid-range-focused sound while the Super Distortion had a somewhat looser low end (but not in a bad way imho) and yet ever-so-slightly-more sharp on the high-end (to my ears anyway). Anecdotally, I've heard folks talk about how the Super Distortion tends to be a little less "picky" about what guitar you put it in (i.e. it goes well with various tone woods, scale lengths, etc.). I've also seen some complain about the Crunch Lab sounding a bit too "clinical" or "unexciting" on its own because of the mid-range focus but sitting nicely in a band mix because of this same property. I could see that. Personally, I liked them both for different reasons. If you play really tight modern metal, the Super Distortion might be a little too flubby on the low-end (and the Crunch Lab might do a better job out of the box), but then again, you can adjust a lot of that with amps and effects. But if you play classic hard rock/metal, I feel like the Super Distortion does that crazy-well! Plus, you could also wire up a parallel switch if you need less power and more high end from a Super Distortion. I wonder how each one would balance with that warm pickup in your PRS? A user by the name of "phacorrea" seems to have liked the Crunch Lab in their SE Custom 24, but I'm not sure of the differences between the standard and the custom. See forums.prsguitars.com/threads/dimarzio-crunch-lab-liquifire.14116/ In the end, you probably couldn't go wrong with either.

Thanks for this..I have a SE Custom 24 that I'm thinking of putting this set into. I have the set, already..Sounds great!

Thanks, Sandy! I have heard good things about the SE Custom 24. My local guitar tech raves about the PRS stuff (even their import stuff). He says they have some of the best fretwork that he's come across (even compared to Fender, Gibson, and some of the other big brand names). I'm liking these pickups in this guitar--kind of makes me not want to sell it, actually. I had initially been a tad worried about how they would sound in a mahogany-bodied guitar, but they sound great to me. The range of the tones from the outside coils to the inside coils surprised me. Inside coils are almost stratty, and the outside coils are somewhat reminiscent of a tele (albeit a bit thinner).

@@guidrummer1 I'm not a metal player at all, but I love DiMarzio pickups.. I have a Evo2 and a Dark Matter in a Ibanez S series HSH guitar, with the stock Infinity in the single coil position. Great playing guitar, as well. The SE Custom is a Guitar Center exclusive, but I got a good deal on it. It has the wide/thin neck on it and it's extremely comfortable to play, but the stock PRS pickups aren't that great sounding. I'm hoping this combo will sound better. I just have to figure out how to wire them to the push/pull pot. I just looked at your Reverb ad.. seems like a really nice guitar, as well.

@@sandyturner1911 I'm not much of a metal player either (quite a lack of speed and precision on my part), but I like the sound of a lot of it. I tend to play more rock/pop/church-type gigs. I bought a Liquifire and Crunch Lab for this guitar, and I bought a Super Distortion for a Penco Les Paul copy that I was rewiring. I also had the DP 211 (EJ Custom neck) in another Les Paul copy that I had a while back. All four were great pickups. I haven't tried the Evo2 (but have read many people raving about them) or the Dark Matter. That Ibanez guitar sounds great--Ibanez has a ridiculous amount of bang for you buck imho. I believe the Torero has a wide-thin neck as well. The thing that has taken me the most time to get used to (and the main reason I am thinking of selling) is the Floyd Rose. I had never had a guitar with a Floyd Rose before and didn't realize there would be a slight learning curve to get it in tune (or that I couldn't do some of the more country-ish G-string bends while holding the B and E strings that I tend to favor). Once it's in tune, though, it STAYS in tune. Maybe not my cup of tea, but I've got to hand it to the Floyd Rose designers. It holds tune like nobody's business.

@@guidrummer1 I have a Super Distortion that I'm thinking of putting in either a Charvel LP copy that I have, or the ML1 Chapman. The neck pickups on those are useable, but I don't like the Bridge pickups. Yes, the Floyd Rose is a pain, but I finally figured out a quicker way to get those in tune. Good luck on your endeavors, and thanks for the conversation.

@@sandyturner1911 Haven't looked much into the Chapmans--I will have to look into them. Thanks, and same to you! Take care.

Tim Huang Yes I am. I know some folks don’t like the use of modeling amps for demoing guitar pickups (i.e. since they tend make a lot of guitars sound the same), but it was all I had to play through at the time. I love my Eleven Rack though! 🙂

@@guidrummer1Yeah it sounds really nice! After viewing ur demo I decided to get a liquifire pickup to pair with my evolutution bridge pickup in my PRS Se Custom 24. I hope that will sound great for Higain Lead and probably some prog-metal rythem. Ur video is very helpful! Right now the only concern I have is that whether liquifire in my Se24 which has a rosewood fingerboard will sound too dark. Your Prs SE Toreo-which has a ebony fingerboard certainly has a brighter sound.

Tim Huang well, I’m glad I could help. Yeah, the Torero is a pretty bright guitar unplugged. I would think that the liquifire would still sound good with a rosewood board though. It’s a nice, “cutting” pickup (in a good way). Bright but smooth. Of the two from this pickup set, I like the liquifire more. Hope it works out in your guitar! Happy shredding!
