Greg - great video! Thanks for all the information. More avocado videos! Perhaps a orchard update on all your varieties you have going? Thanks again!

Thanks, Andrew. I'll plan to do that when all are in bloom or flushing new growth.

Ok so I was just being over dramatic lol. Finally had my first plant get to about 7ft tall, don’t plan on letting it get much taller than 12ft so I can still reach for the distant future when it starts to put out avocados

Thanks for providing these videos, in addition to your excellent articles. I have a very large avocado tree, and will be hiring professionals to get it down to manageable size. My goal is to be able to do maintenance pruning myself thereafter, but without putting myself at too much risk. So I'm curious how you got up in the tree and sawed off that branch. Ladder or climb? Hand saw or electric? Are you using any specialized tools or safety equipment? Can you point to any resources you like on best practices for doing this safely? Thanks! * I understand that any advice you give is for entertainment purposes only and I assume any all risk of any actions I take. 😜

For entertainment purposes only, ha! I do a combination of climbing and pole pruning and ladder pruning. It all depends on the tree and the slope. On that tree at that time in particular, I cut with a pole saw (not powered). Most commercial farms use pole saws that are gas powered. Frankly, most of them do hack jobs on their trees, but the trees still usually grow back fine. I find pole saws annoying. I use them when I have to, but I prefer to climb up and use a handsaw. I do like pole clippers though. I use mine often on smaller limbs. As you alluded to, the key is to not let your tree get beyond your level of control in the first place. Once you get professionals to bring it down in size, then just make sure that you prune often in order to keep it manageable for you. How often? Once a tree is about eight years old, it grows very fast after a pruning. I do a hard pruning on my older trees once at the end of winter, but I follow up with about two light prunings in summer also. That is what's necessary to keep my trees in the 12 to 15-foot range, so that pruning them never feels dangerous.

In what vegetative period can do significant pruning on the trunk?

hi Greg-great show. Now am in kenya and i recently converted coffee garden into hass avocado, have planted about 50 of them . i would really like to know how to control the seedlings since they are growing too big within a short time .My father likes bushy and tall trees but by my experience they have very low yields.would you mind to explain to me how to keep them short and less bushy and how often should i do pruning. At least to maximize the yields. will really appreciate.

Hi Peter, There's a lot to think about here. Most people find it necessary to prune two or three times per year to keep trees down to a certain size once they have reached full size. However, often it's only one "hard" pruning and a couple of very light prunings. This may be different in your equatorial climate though. Not sure. When is the best time of year to prune? Just before the Spring bloom?
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 3 года назад
Depends a bit on where you live, but yes, that's about the right time phenologically. Early March is usually the best time for my location.

Does it matter at what time of year you need to prune?

It can matter, depending on some factors. See explanation here: gregalder.com/yardposts/pruning-avocado-trees/

What time of the year is best to cut/trim Avocado tree?
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 4 года назад
In most years I prefer March, but if your location rarely gets any frost then January or February is even better. You can prune here in April safely, but as it warms up the danger of sunburn increases so painting exposed limbs with white latex becomes more important.

@@gregalderdotcom Five years back we planted some 20 trees. We are not sure whether the tree will survive the climate. But to my surprise it grows very well. This is our first time doing this. I don't know in other places, here in my garden it starts flowering in mid March. Pruning now will not be very good. But like you said January will good, since we don't have frost around here. But up to 10-12 degree Celsius in peak winter. Once again thank you for the video.

@gregalderdotcom

Yes, it's true that usually seedling trees take longer to fruit than grafted trees.

@@mayapirati8468 Pruning the tree usually delays fruiting, but it depends on how much you prune.

When you get that many avocados per tree per year do you wait to pick them just when you need them and then they will stay longer on the tree or how is the procedure for having avocados last longer
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 3 года назад
Best place to store the avocados is on the tree. So you pick only as needed for eating.

Sure, you can prune the lower limbs.
@NMW80
@NMW80 4 года назад
It may need a type b avo tree to make pollination better so you get more fruit. Or maybe the bees didn’t do their job well.

If i top my tree will it grow more fruit?
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 5 лет назад
More than before topping? No. But an avocado tree kept pruned to 10 or 15 feet can still provide an average of near 100 avocados each year.
