Good morning from Windermere, Florida zone 9b. Laughing at your comment on thorns. I'm 70, gardening over 50 years and a retired florist. I remember just how much I wish Roses DIDN'T HAVE THORNS 🤣 But watching each and every video you produce reminds me how much I love gardening. I take great pride in my garden and in making videos on my little sucesses. I hope you have many more years of being excited about your next projects 👩🌾💕🌿
I wish you could have flashed up what each of these looked like in their prime last season. I've seen them all before 😅 ... just love me a good before and after.
You are going to be suprise, how fuller it will be, and how much bloom it will have, I cut mine in half but I Skip a year ,it is always full of small pink Roses
My 4 yr old was watching with me and told me she wants to plant a climbing rose. She also said she wants to live at you house so she can talk to Laura lol.
I'm glad you showed just how much you can trim off and create a healthy plant. It is very intimidating when you first start. Thank you for such a great tutorial.
It's amazing how entertaining it is JUST to watch you trim✂️ roses 🌹!!! The ONLY prob I've ever had with your videos is that I hate when they're over. 😩🤣 There's no one else that could make learning so fun. You're such a sweet 😊 teacher. I'll say it again, thank you for your daily distraction from my constant pain 😟 darlin. 💜
I have been gardening since I was a child. Just hitting and missing. I learn so much from your videos! What a blessing! Thank you. I am 78 so it’s never too late to learn!
Roses are the one thing this former plant killer hasn't killed. I love roses! Just trimmed mine up the other day as well. Now you made me want to go buy more roses!
Yesterday my friend & I went full tilt into pruning the roses, shaping my globe spruce, cedars & removing shrubs. (Zone 6) Then we pruned a sandcherry tree that gets infected with aphids & ants every year. All the time we were cleaning & pruning, we talked about what Laura would do & how she would tackle each plant. What we realized was that the trees needed better air circulation, dormant oil spray & a way to keep ants off the sandcherry as they help spread aphids. We had so much fun! We laughed, we worked, we took breaks & took steps back to ensure we were going in the right direction. Thank you Laura for guiding & inspiring us to take on change to remove things that weren't making us happy & make change. Sincerely appreciated, your fan from Toronto, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦
You’re already pruning roses and trees in Toronto?! I live in the GTA as well but I’m scared the cold nights this week will bite me in the arse. I’m too scared 😟
@@jhonalynapostol3225 Hello neighbour 👋 I completely understand why you are concerned. This time of year can be a bit up & down with weather but my feeling based on the weather reports for our area (which is closer to the furthest west part of the GTA) is that things are milder & more stable than other years. My gardens are slimmer & mostly run along the side & front of the house & I have a small backyard. So my plants tend to feel the warmth of the sun & heat from our house bricks & the direction we face which is SW. The soil here is able to turn easily & that's when I knew for my situation, that it was OK to start pruning & cleaning. Also, I'm not sure if you noticed it where you are but the trees here are budding heavily. I could see the aphids starting to plump up on the sandcherry & new I needed the dormant oil quickly & I removed some branches I didn't realize were cutting off air circulation. I've learned a great deal from Laura & am very thankful. I hope everything will be ok. Most trees, evergreens in my garden are 5 - 10 yrs old, nothing new or tender. So far it's looking great & we are in for some rain & mild Temps which should help out the plants. Now if only we had the bio-tone line here, that would be really helpful! 😁It's easier to follow than miracle grow & organic which I like. If you ever find any here, please let me know. I won't be planting anything yet but I'm preparing. annuals are the Victoria day weekend, but I need a cedar & a yew for an empty spot. I must say, getting out & touching the soil, cleaning the old & seeing the buds of my magnolia trees & perennials was an incredible feeling. I'm also redesigning a section of my side garden with a new arbour which is fun & intimidating. I humbly suggest to do your gardening when you feel comfortable & it's right for you. Early pruning is new to me as well. I've watched the 14 day weather forecast for a while, it gives me a better idea of what's happening. The soil is soft & my planters are emptied so I'm fairly happy. I hope all goes well for you this planting season. Most of all, enjoy your garden, run your hands through the soil, it's very healing for the soul. I found this quote a while ago (not sure who wrote it) but it is something that always reassures me & I'll share it with you. "A garden is a friend you can visit anytime" everything in little bits & when you're comfortable. Best wishes this planting season. 🌱💝😁
@@mirandabeaudry7936 Thank you very much. We had a splendid day out in the sun & warmth laughing, (keeping proper distance) & changing up the garden. I think we were all happy to get outside in the fresh air :)
I'm just encountering this video now as I contemplate getting my late mother's climbing rose under control (it's reached up between the gutter and the house!). I had no clue what to do so I looked to Laura for the Garden Answer :) I'm in Niagara and wondered, what do you look for to know when it's a good time to prune? And can you really prune almost all the rose without hurting it????
Please give us an update when these are in blooms Laura. That'll make some people more brave and optimistic about pruning their roses. It's so hard the first time.
I was almost done with this video when I realized I didn't even have a rose that needs pruning. It's great watching and learning from you as always. Thank you Laura.
This was so helpful! Could you do a video on trimming clematis. Mine get so out of control and I don’t know what to do. It’s a variety that you don’t cut all the way down.
HEY! Will you be doing a month to month garden tour? in your past video you have done garden tours for almost each month and those videos are AWESOME I really enjoy them.
So glad to see you returning to the more frequent posting schedule. It's much appreciated and we all know how much work it involves filming and editing. And have to say the lack of disease resistance Zéphirine Drouhin is displaying is totally offset by its lack of thorns and the lovely fragrance and magenta colour. And worth treating roses to some well rotten manure alongside fertiliser, they're such hungry plants but in the large scheme of things so easy to look after with a bit of a schedule.
I love pruning roses, it's so satisfying! Especially when they look beautiful as they start to leaf out and bloom... 😊 Everytime you come near the chickens, they are looking for snacks😄
You gave me a new love for roses! I planted three new plants last year after a long hiatus because I didn't like the thorns. I'm so glad I'm growing them again because life is so much better with roses than without. I even have a David Austin rose coming in May (thanks to you). I am so much braver in the garden now after watching and being inspired by you.
This is a great video. I hope to see a dedicated update video on these roses. I love them! Here's a suggestion that you might find helpful; Can you do a video talking about the mistakes you have done and learned from in all your years of gardening? Thank you so much and more power to you guys!
Roses have always been the one plant I’m afraid to even try planting. I’m so intimidated by them. Your videos are changing my mind. Perhaps this will be the year for me.
I encourage you to try it! Just do a bit of research ones that are disease resistant for your first go. Why make it harder on yourself? Have fun and happy gardening 😊
I agree the only roses I have are drift roses. I keep thinking I would love to Have a climbing rose on my fence, but the pruning work intimidates me And I don’t really like the look of sticks half of the year.
The roses will thank you with a fabulous show this summer!! It always seems so drastic when you do it but they really do so much better. Thanks for the tutorial and you will have to revisit them when they're in full bloom to prove that you didn't kill them : ))
...and when you do show them this summer, Laura, please show a pic of how they look today to remind us. TY, lovely Laura...and you too, adorable Aaron (LOL).
It is so good to see you full of energy and feeling good this year! Can't wait to see all the changes and growth on our, I mean YOUR, property this year :-)
I have a love/hate relationship with rose pruning 😂 Those thorns will get you, but the new growth that is triggered by the pruning is just spectacular! 🌹
Thank you for this video, so timely!! and I have to add I love reading the comments on your videos too, such a lovely group of people who want to encourage and share their knowledge. It's really wonderful.
Thank you for this video - perfect timing! Was just seeing how sad my rose looks as I was out with my pup... thank you for inspiring me to really get in there and cut it back! Saw a beautiful trellis at Costco to replace my sad wooden one that lasted only one season...womp womp! Can’t wait to get to work!
Have you ever tried to use your cuttings to start another rose? I tried it a few years ago with my knockout roses and to my surprise 4 out of 6 lived .
It’s like you read my mind Laura! I just got two climbing David Austin climbers and two Zephrines to go up two brand new arbors in my garden and was hoping you would make a climbing rose tutorial!
I am pretty heavy handed whenever I prune so anytime you warn us that you are about to do a severe prune my attitude is usually, "meh." But this pruning had me clutching my pearls and realizing that I have always had problems with climbing roses because I wasn't pruning them back enough. I may reconsider growing them again.
I and my spouse have been debating for several weeks about which of us is going to build a wooden trellis for the roses that came with our home. After seeing your grid system, the problem was solved!!! Our roses are all up against the side of a screened patio that has sturdy wooden posts. The wire grid will be nearly invisible against the screen and I will finally be able to start training these climbers. You are not only a really good teacher, but your videos give just the right amount of information -- anything I miss I can go back and watch without having to sit through excess verbiage. (I'm a retired teacher, so I really appreciate good presentation!)
That was a great how-to video. There are quite a few videos on how to prune climbing roses but not many on how to prune them depending on what is supporting the climbing rose (flat surface, obelisk or archway trellis). I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's always so satisfying to see you fearlessly prune plants in the name of long-term beauty!! I can't wait to get into our new house so I can attack some of the beautiful but overgrown plants on the property.
👋 thank you so much for this video! I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I’d really appreciate it if you slowed down your sped up clips just a little, even if it results in a longer video. I’m a very visual learner which is why I love your videos so much! 💕💗💕
One thing I would enjoy to see is an update further into the season of the growth and blooms of these roses. We moved into our forever home and I have a blank slate in the back yard and I'm thinking roses again.
So happy spring is finally here! I did this last year to several that were over grown mammoths. lol I look forward to those blooms this year. I still have a couple of David Austin runners to do this week.
Oh! I loved seeing that clean up and pruning take place. I loved that you were outdoors again working it! Fascinating about the bulbs and how you stored them and now are getting them ready for another year! Love watching roses get pruned. My iceberg roses need a hard pruning and I'm nervous but will follow your demo.
Thank you for doing this rose pruning video. I have all three of the examples you demonstrated and always felt so much anxiety when I went out to prune them. Pretty sure I won’t anymore. 👌
You gave me the courage to tackle a climbing rose that I let get out of control for like 4 years I was to intimated because it was huge but now it looks so much better 🙂
You really helped me determine how much to cut back. I was always worried about cutting back too much and if my rose plant dies. Thanks so much! Always love watching your videos. BtW, I fell in love with Russell - he is so adorable! I love the way he follows you everywhere.
Great video Laura. Really loved watching this. I pruned my climbing roses last weekend so it was really good to get the confirmation that I got it right! Very relieved! 😂
Such an important point that you made about training climbing rose canes horizontally , like the fan on your coop, so many more blooms that way ( apial dominance), it’ll look so gorgeous 🌸
i think pruning roses is one of the most satisfying jobs in the garden... it's a battle of will between gloves and thorns (man vs nature), the roses love it, and you are rewarded with gorgeous flowers for your efforts... i am learning more and more each year about roses, one of which, thanks to you, is ROSETONE... oh my word!! the difference in the color of the leaves bursting open on my roses this year is amazing!! i am so looking forward to seeing how they do since i'm giving them obviously the BEST of the BEST fertilizer, lol... i love your climbers; i love where they are placed and i think your choice of variety makes a stunning show on your different trellises... spring is coming; is it because of the COVID year we've had?? i am looking forward to spring more than ever this year! thanks for the video!
Great job Laura!! The way you are directing those canes will produce a showy set of blooms. That Zephrine is actually a pretty large growing shrub... Question: Do you spray your roses with a preventative horticultural oil after pruning?
Great video today Laura. On pruning climbing roses. Great tips and advice. They look so much better cut back. They will be so beautiful when they bloom. Can't wait to see. I been doing lots of cutting back today to.
Thank you, thank you for this tutorial! I remember the videos from last summer when you would comment on the rose bushes on the chicken coop and how they needed to be trained. So glad to see the “how”. I purchased a David Austin climbing rose last year and needed to know what to do this spring. Thank you for continuing to not just show us what you do but teach us how to do it too.
Thanks so much! I really needed the help. The first video I ever watched by you was your rose pruning video from your old house and it helped me greatly. It also got me hooked on your channel. You made it seem less confusing and achievable. Thanks again!
Aaron, can you make a montage of all the times Laura says she ended up pruning more than just a little 😂 Also, the timing of this video could not have been better for me. Very nice job, thanks you two!
My daughter loved the chickens in the video. She wants to know if you will make a video of just the chickens wandering around? :) Thank you for all of the wonderful videos and information! You do an amazing job!
Great video! I couldn’t help but wince every time you ran your gloveless hands up snd down the thornless cans of the roses covering the coop, lol. I did a severe pruning on my 17 year old carpet roses that stand 8ft tall. I limbed them up and planted winter snd spring blooming bulbs. My husband said I took so much off of them he is worried. But the space is so tight I needed to raise the canopy so the path stays open. After watching this, I am encouraged. You give me courage.
I've never really wanted a rose (seemed like too much work) but you make this look so easy that you may have convinced me to give it a try on an obelisk like this!
