Hi, Laura. I am a Consulting Rosarian via the American Rose Society. I garden in Zone 7. Gardeners in warmer zones do not bury the bud union. We winterize our roses by covering the bud union with mulch, then pull back the mulch in the spring once there is no chance for an overnight freeze. I love your videos!

What kind of mulch? I have been leaving some leaves on mine over the winter. The rise bush is up by my house and I have a big tree that drops leaves late fall. I have noticed the leaves blow up under the rose bushes and they grow really good in the spring. Is this good enough?

I always wonder how much faster her day would go if she didn’t have to walk across the street to set up a camera in the truck to walk back across the street to get the roses to walk back across the street to get in the truck 😂 Trying to capture all of the walking clips would be so frustratingly extra for me.

Hi Laura, I was surprised to learn in this video that you bury the graft union. With so many other grafted plants (like a Japanese maple for example) it seems like you have to make sure to not bury the grafts. Could you explain why roses should have that part buried? Thank you!

@brooksstudiosgarden1615
@brooksstudiosgarden1615 4 года назад
Ok, so I just looked it up and it is recommended if you’re planting roses in zone 5 and below to bury the grafting union to protect it from freezing temps. Zone 6 and above can plant them with the grafting union above the soil. So that confirms that she really knows what she’s doing!
@sanjaydavenport1937
@sanjaydavenport1937 4 года назад
David Austin roses recommends to bury the graft union below soil. I have been burying the graft union in my roses for a decade now and it works great. I know there is a big debate about to bury or not to bury.

Yep this comment needs to be PINNED, my neighbor touched the cables with a carbon fiber fishing rod and died on the spot. Everybody was shocked to find out carbon conducts electricity, his family was devastated, he was in his 40's. I really wish Laura would be more careful about this , at 700k ppl will imitate her without thinking. I really hope she doesn't end up like that chinese lady that got two girls killed with an improvised popcorn maker. When it's just you, an adult, in your backyard you get a darwin award, when you're an influencer and kids have access to your vids it gets a bit more complicated and while you can blame the parents, I think Laura is the decent type of person that would feel haunted if she ever hurt anyone.

I am curious why you didn't consider planting these roses in a gopher cage? They are super easy to make yourself with hardware cloth. I had the same problem and no amount of Repels All would rid my garden of those persistently hungry critters. I finally took a few extra minutes, when replacing my lost plants, to make cages for all my beauties and have not lost a single plant since doing that. Rural gardening where I live requires some serious methods, and since I don't like killing the creatures, the next best thing would be to remove their source of access to desirable food.

Would it help to use perma-til in your dug holes to deter the gophers. I have used it in every hole I have dug for several years now and it has stopped the voles from eating the roots of my plants. They don't like their noses getting cut from the lava like sharp edges.

“Burned roots?”.... In a recent video (definitely within the last few days) you had mentioned “burned roots” ... I think it was in regards to people using the incorrect level/amount of Biotone (or other fertilizers) when planting/transplanting something. I always thought the more “vitamins” for a plant, the better...When I saw the amount of Biotone dropped in with the roses, it looked like a lot...or was it? Lol! Hence the question..😀

I dig my holes, positioned the roots, buried halfway and then saturated the hole with water. Per instructions. Then once it drained, I filled the rest with dirt and then watered again to help it settle. The fresh greenish pink buds that were on its branches have since turned brown :( have I ruined my roses?

Laura, Please don’t laugh when I say this, but all this time that I’ve been watching your video’s, I had no idea what David Austin Roses were. I know, I know, I’m a novice at this, but I’m learning, lol! I was thinking that it was a “brand”, which it is, but they are so much more. I did a little research (which is what I do when I know that I don’t know), and I now understand the importance of the “brand”. I learn so much from you, so any info you can provide will be helpful. Thanks Laura

The soft apricot and butter yellow of these ones are just stunning. Can’t wait to see them in bloom. Wow! Your new land is huge and that’s a lot of fence. It looks great with the new fence around it. Can’t wait to see you play in your new playground!!! Stay safe. Love & Hugs! 💜🤗🦋🦜🌷☀️

Love you and Erin The Impatient Gardener. Found her Channel thru you. She also gardens Zone 5 just a few hours from me. My weather is more comparable to hers. We are no where near ready to plant.

I live in Utah, Zone 6b, and I LOVED when you dug in that shovel to plant the first rose. The way the soil broke up when you pulled it up tells me you have the exact same soil as we do: clay, clay, and more clay. It gives me hope that my garden can look beautiful, too!

Hi Laura! Your videos is the first thing i watch in the morning to get thru my day! Enjoy them very much! Can you have those in pots? I live in las Las Vegas z.9 i think we are not experts at gardening at all. We just bought our house last year had and it had desert landscape and been adding some greenery thanks to your videos and advice. Thank you!!

Hoping your family stays safe, here in Canada the nurseries have either delayed opening or are doing curbside pick up only! No plant shopping for me 😭😭😭 I wish Espoma products were available in Canada too! Might have to order some from Amazon

Mandy Clark hi I am from Canada too. I would love to have espoma products here as well as boni de. I checked on Amazon last year and there are few options and very e pensive. I wanted to do a border run this spring but that will have to wait now 🥴.

I bought David Austin roses and was a little disappointed when I realized they’re miniature. However! The first blooms were huge (normal) and smelled amazing. These are so worth it. Love them
