In todays video I prune two David Austin roses after their first year in my garden! I followed the David Austin rose pruning directions for shrub roses that have had one bloom year. I can't wait to see what they look like this year! I'm a beginner (also in zone 9) and I've been afraid of pruning my DA roses as they're already growing so slowly.

If you plant your roses in organic soil in pots you will be amazed on how they grow also try a table spoon ful of Epsom salt rake in then water in the early spring

I don’t do that because I’m too impatient but I know that is a recommendation by rose growers for the first year! No blooms, just let the roots get established.

Thanks for this video. Do you leave your container roses outside during the winter? Do you wrap them?

I do leave them out unwrapped in my containers! So far so good! One thing I was thinking about doing in future when I have permanent locations for my rose containers is taking container bottoms off and allowing the roots to go down into the soil (because that’s possible with the majority of my roses)….which would make them happier I think! But as of today they are container roses that endure the winter in their pots with no extra love. 🙂

Hi. I have a roald dahl for two years. The spring blossom is amazing. But it never bloomed in the fall. My area is zone 9B. Do you know why?😢

Hi! My thoughts are: fertiliser! Deadhead old blooms! Watering regularly and full-sun position all season. Plants on drip flower better then hand watered pots. The consistency helps them. Roses need tons of sun..although on those 100’ days they want afternoon protection! I hope something resonates! Good luck!

Which David Austin roses do you recommend for the containers and what size of the container? I am in bay area as well...

I am working on a follow up on my roses so look for that coming out soon! But to answer your question, the Roald Dahl is a perfect shape for a container as it drips over the edge. Unless you want a more erect look, then the Alnwick is perfect. It has a V shape! I think the Gabriel Oak will also be a “dripper” like the RD! As for life in the container…they all seem to be doing equally fine!
