Great information! I like the idea of using the stick you measured to the height you needed. Makes it easier. Then I also like that you remove all the old foliage. Makes perfect sense. All the steps you mentioned today are appreciated. This is a video one could always refer back to. Now that you have them all trimmed you you can sit back and wait for the beauty to appear in Spring! Exciting even now!

You’re such a blessing, and a tonic! My husband passed away a couple of years ago, and I had to downsize from my Georgian Colonial home, and leave my greenhouse, and acre of land, and gardens. David Austin’s we’re my very favorite pick of roses, some 15, or so along with countless Teas. One was a Generous Gardner climbing on a pillar on my back terrace. Well, not having a clue myself, I followed the advice of a local Master Gardner, who was a close friend.! “Don’t prune a climbing rose for two, or three years, if at all!”. Nope! By the third year this prolific grower was a sprawling heap on the lattice top! Abundant flowering gave way to abundant petaling! Generous Gardner petals early, and easily while still producing large quantities of buds, and flowers. Fragrant, and lovely in individual form, with rich green foliage, she’s a show stopper! However, messy, and unwieldy if not tended to with verve! BTW, I’m a North Carolinian…born in Albemarle, and raised in Charlotte until my family moved to California. My piece of Heaven was this beautiful house we built designed after an 1820 Greek Revival..Georgian down to the door latches. And plantings from Mimosas (Albasias), Magnolias, Pecan, Silverback Maples, Tulip Poplar, Crepe Myrtle etc. you get the picture…..it was like plucking up much that I had loved, and dropping it on a hill outside Los Angeles.

I intended on looking this up, but now I know! Here’s to a healthier year of roses! 🥂 I just love mine. 🌹

Jenny, thanks for the rose pruning tips. I'm not crazy about growing roses, mainly because the newer cultivars don't seem to have much scent to them. I did, however, pick up a couple of miniature rose bushes at one of my favorite family-owned nurseries early last fall. I hope they survive our cold temps. I'm sure enjoying watching Brynna grow and ❤love seeing her in your videos! She is full of spirited puppy energy and so stinkin' cute!🐕🐾

I love David Austin roses, ordered about 10 years ago. First year I was so happy, beautiful! Next year the deer also loved them, nothing I tried stopped them. Bye my beautiful roses. I would love to know why deer don’t bother all of your lovely flowers. I live in South Carolina and they will eat anything, even day lilies.They don’t like my perennials like sage, lantana’s, Hibiscus, Salvia. And oh my, I planted Mexican Heather, the honey bees and bumblebee’s completely covered it until November. If anyone wants bees , they love it! We just have to adjust to live with our wildlife! Thanks for the tips on rose pruning. I had a couple of roses for several years and then they ended up dying. Was never really sure what happened with them (it was probably me). Haven't really wanted to try roses since then. Brynna is really growing. Love seeing her.

My Jerry and I visited Creekside Nursery last Spring! I purchased my At Last rose from your nursery…my first rose! This rose was such an amazing addition to my zone 8A garden. I had blooms until January. 🌹This video gave me the courage and valuable information I needed to prune my first year rose. I’ve got 5 David Austin roses on their way and I’m so excited to get growing! I can’t find your video where you planted your David Austin roses. Great information. I have always heard that a rule-of-thumb for bush roses is to take out the small branches that are growing inward...so you leave a look as a "bowl"/"vase" could sit down in the middle of the pruning. (if this description makes sense.) Thanks for the idea of putting in a measured stick to get the right sizing.

Much needed this. I have some heirloom roses. This will be the 2nd year. They are not doing as well as I expected and I may have some that won’t come back this year. On another subject, can you do a pruning/think out video on blueberries? Mine are past needing a good clean out.

I really enjoyed this video and I am going to tackle mines this week and I am also going to take the leaves off because I had a lot of black spots and yellow leaves. I garden in Georgia zone 7b.

Thank you for posting this video., I have seen many gardening videos over the years and no one posted this infor. I would say however that there is no need to remove EVERY leaf on your roses. After 40 yrs of pruning, I am trying to save your basal joint of your thumb from arthritis. Just remove the diseased foilage and that on the ground. There is nothing to say the spores are not in your mulch and will splash up the next heavy rain. That is why I use a systemic fertilizer in spring. I also use Neem Oil in the evening hours. I know you are busy. Maybe your son could police the roses once a week with a bucket for any bad leaves. What if you had a whole plot full of roses like rosarians do? No way do they remove every leaf.

This is so helpful for some of the first-year roses I have in the ground--thank you! Unrelatedly, I also wondered if you could tell us what the yellow-foliage shrub is (seen around 13:35) that's planted by your meter box, around the corner from your white rose of sharon? Beautiful video, more people are getting roses, they are not as difficult as some people may think, your video helps does that are beginners in the world of roses. I have over 50 roses in my garden zone 7a in Utah. I always prune my roses in February, we are cover in snow in January. I cannot wait for Spring! Are you planning of getting more roses this year?

My sister passed away last February and my best friend gave me a beautiful rose in remembrance of her. It’s a Jackson Perkins. Was just roots when I got it. I really want to keep it alive! I live in zone 9 in Texas. It’s blooms are beautiful, pink outlined with yellow. How far down should I prune and when do you suggest I prune it as I live in south Texas. I received it and planted it in late spring. I just subscribed to your channel today!! I have been following Laura for a year now and found you through her! Hello. I love my David Austin’s! I have about 15 and wish I had room for about 15 more. I live in South Carolina. Like you, I followed DA’s instructions with great success last year. I have a question…..do you add manure and bone meal when you fertilize in March? I was thinking about doing that this spring. Which DA’s do you have? I always enjoy your videos. ❤️

I did not know that you were supposed to prune rose of Sharon 😳 I bought mine a small plants so mine are probably up to my knee, I'm wondering if I should really prune it this year I do want mine to get tall and bushy 🤔

I completely agree. You do not have to be David Austin to grow DA roses! BTW I had no idea that you could cut your DA roses that far back Year 1. Is that because you live in a warmer climate than here in New England? I thought in Year 1 you could only cut the stems back 3-5 inches. That is what I remember reading in the DA handbook and online. Just wondering....

Thank you for the information! We will be pruning our roses soon. We had snow recently which bent the stems down to the ground. Do you get those Japanese beetles on your roses in the summer? They devour our beautiful blooms, and I'm not sure the solution.

The night time temperature these next few days will be in the upper 20s/ lower 30s. Would pruning them still be okay? I got my first two last year as well! My grandmother always said to cut back roses around Valentine’s Day to help you remember to do so

I love watch people prune and work in the garden. Why is it alway the part that gets speeded up. Maybe you could talk while the work is happening? Please. I noticed you did some on the rose of Sharon. Thankyou for that.

I have a video request, or idea for you to work off of….. good quality gardening items / tools for lower budget hobby gardeners. I’ve been on the fence for a few years for Felco tools, and basically all the fancy shiny things at Gardeners Supply 😊 . But since gardening is more of a 🤷🏻‍♀️-eh hobby (a plant here or there and nothing more) I know the items will get very little use, if any, and ultimately become lost in the shed. Do you have any recommendations for the lower end budgets or those just starting out? I know, poor tools equal poor results and great tools equal great results mantra but if anything the last few years have taught many people is, use what you have to the best of its, and your, ability until better comes along. $70 pruners will have to wait for now. But what to use in the meantime? I don’t think I’m alone in this boat. I apologize if this makes no sense to the avid gardeners out there that love to invest is high quality tools. Between my ability to kill a fake plant, and Japanese beetles eating everything, gardening becomes a dreaded chore most of the time. Though, for a brief moment I’ll happily play in the dirt, and that’s when I need budget friendly tools…. One’s that when I ultimately misplace them, I’m not out a c-note. 😂

Jenny I have 1 year old DA roses that I haven’t prunes yet. I’m in the south as well zone 9b, but I would like to move them because they’re not getting enough sun. Should I move them first then prune or prune and then move? Thanks for sharing this great informative video. Brenna is gorgeous!!

Is this tutorial for DAustin roses only or do we prune all of our roses (depending on the climate) in the colder months? I have a climbing rose that’s about 20 years old but have no idea what brand it is.
