I love seeing Russell in your videos, he has such great timing and seems to fit in so well like he was trained to do what he does. I like to trim back everything in my yard, like the rose bushes and all of my perennials, they just seem to do better and then I don't have to trim them in the spring, and the new growth has room to grow. I love these videos, I always learn something new to either try or think about trying. Thank you again Laura.

No TV show ..... too many restrictions for content, etc. She is creative and she has no restrictions on RU-vid....this will not be the case for TV producers. She will make more money , less stress , total 100% freedom on creativity. She will have her own schedule that she manages with freedom to raise her kids and better balanced family life. That is Nirvana ! RU-vid personalities could bring in income over $500 K over time.

You need at least 1,5 million views per month to make decent money from ads and, of course, plenty of sponsorships, of which gardening doesn't have many. Laura is very charismatic and very passionate about gardening and she could try TV out. Not only would she make more money but she could also get a bigger audience, so when her TV career is over, she can still resume RU-vid and make more money than she currently does.

FP HOME don’t sell yourself short. You have a garden. Just a small, potted one 😉 I couldn’t agree more though. Very few of us would have the time or resources to do what she does... but she makes it so entertaining to watch that I find myself fully enthralled watching her care for plants that I can’t even grow in my zone 😂

My son died last year and I stumbled on your videos during a sleepless night and have been watching ever since. You have reminded me of how much I loved gardening with my grandmother as a child. Thanks for this video. I bought several Blace Lace Elderberries after seeing you use them. I love their dark leaves and how delicate they look. I agree about removing the fence. I noticed in a previous video when you stood a ways off to show it, that it makes the area more inclusive to not have the fence. I can't wait to see what you'll do in that area.

I do, too, but we’re trying to move away from dyed mulch...this new mulch definitely looks more reddish in video, but it’s a solid brown In person. Trying to get used to it! 😬☺️

Snow came earlier here on the Canadian prairies than I expected and I didn't get my hostas or peonies cut back... I hope they will survive the long winter with no rot or damage come spring time... fingers crossed.

Thanks for the tip. I still need to clean up my hosta and peonies... I've got a black lace elderberry too and it gets huge every year as well. I trimmed off a few really long branches already but will do more a little later this winter. I don't cut it back quite as much as you do though. You sound like me "while I'm back here I'll just do this too..." :D

Laura, I would love to see how the pink gomphrena wreath would look with some of the pink berries from the Proud Berry Coralberry added. By the way, no one does Fall or Spring cleanup exactly the way it's supposed to be done! I think the only right way is how much time and energy we have to do it! I just love your little garden supervisor Russel, he's so cute.

I love your videos, very motivating. I'm in zone 5 also but much colder than normal temps this year. I'm going to bundle up & pick an area to clean since the sun is out today. If I pick a section like you did and work on that today it doesn't seem so overwhelming. I just love when Russell appears in the videos. He is so cute.

I agree about getting clean up done in fall. I cut all of my herbaceous perennials to the ground and prune as many of my flowering shrubs as I can get away with.

I didn't get around to fall cleanup and I was about to recently and had noticed that the seed buds on my zinnias were being eaten probably by birds or squirrels so I just left everything more fall cleanup yes but at least I know they are providing food for the hungry critters. So more fall cleanup it is for me.

How do you dispose of the bigger elderberry branches? I garden on a fairly small lot and prefer to compost as much debris as possible, but getting rid of larger branches without owning or renting a chipper is one of my bigger headaches. I spend a lot of time converting big sticks into small sticks that take up less space in the mulch pile, so if you have a better solution I would like to hear it.

Thanks for this reassuring video, I was worried about my very crispy hydrangeas. We have had more unseasonably cold weather up here in Minnesota also. Put in 2 beauty berries 1 is crispy and the other was still ok yesterday. Current temp is 16 so will check it when it gets light out.

You said cutting back butterfly bushes can open them up to winter damage. How do I know which other perennials and shrubs are susceptible to winter damage if pruned in the fall? Is there a rule of thumb or general guideline to follow? I am in zone 5. I tend to not cut anything back because I'm afraid it will stimulate the plant to put on new growth right before winter. Most landscaping companies in my area go through and whack everything down to the ground when they do fall clean-ups and blow every last leaf out of the flower beds, leaving the yard looking bare and unprotected from our northern Indiana winters.

We have wet fall and wet springs out here in New York. Fall cleaning prevents a mushy, post-winter clean-up where things may have rotted from being smothered by their own mushy foliage

this is my second knee injury in 10 years where I had surgery in October. all the bits and bobs that didn't get cleaned out before sat under the snow until spring (May around here) and didn't suffer too much.

Winter.....”but then I kinda love it too. A good excuse not to be working “ that’s exactly why I love winter too plus it’s a nice change from the other seasons. Great video I never knew to not cut back buddleia or caryopteris. Customers come back so often having lost them that must be the reason. That and maybe wet feet as we are along the water.

I scrolled through the comments for this exact same question. Would love to know the answer, because Fall and even Spring clean up can produce so many large branches and things to dispose of. Maybe a small chipper is needed to chop everything up to add to a compost pile?

I love your videos. I’ve never gardened before and you are teaching me so much. I’m curious why you left the frozen hydrangeas and didn’t clean them up or cut them back. Frankly, I’m nervous about cutting back any of my plants. Sometimes my lack of knowledge is paralyzing.

Oh I totally feel you on that paralysis - BTDT!!! But you're learning, so just keep soaking up information and you'll start feeling more confident. These videos are among the best I've found anywhere so you're in a great place!! As for the hydrangeas, leaving them up adds some winter interest. They can look really pretty once everything else is covered in snow!

Here in zone 4/5 Canada, butterfly bushes are far too tender for our harsh winters coupled with freezing rain. They will perish sooner if not later, yet keep right on selling. Great tips on black lace elderberry!

What do you do with all of the yard waste? We have to bag everything and put it out for the city to haul away in a garbage truck. Clean up usually means tons of bags of garbage. Is there a better option that you know of?

MIGardener just did a video about digging a trench in the middle of your beds, placing the debris in the trench, and covering it all up. The material naturally breaks down and enriches the soil.

I know this isn't the popular thing to say but you are missing out on providing mainly food for the birds such as waxwings, cardinals, chickadees, robins, goldfinches, & more - many die in winter due to lack of food , especially if they have been relying on your flower beds throughout the growing season for seeds, insects, and nectar. By leaving sedums (asters), coneflowers, rosehips, etc. I have found in late winter / early spring when all their food is gone they go to town on that stuff and I also get a convention of robins' that is stunning!

I think she just tosses it into the dumpster and lets it break down at the dump. I get that some townships/cities require lawn waste to be either burned or packaged in special brown bags for removal but I don't think she's in such a restrictive area. She can just chuck it all. I think. I'm just guessing.

Could you do a video on how to wrap up a hydrangea to protect in the winter. We have 4 that have winter die back every year. Even with a mild winter. Only one has had a bloom on it. We have also had a hard frost already and I may be to late to protect them but I would like to try. The blooms a gorgeous pale blue and I would love to see them again. Do not know the variety.

I have many David Austin rose bushes. I was told not to cut them back until spring. I would love to cut them back now because they are so unsightly (crunchy). I live in Boise which is your same zone. 😉
