In the North that would make things quite hard, since there's not too much sun in the wintertime - we might have to go a whole month without new videos! 😁
Hi Nigel. When I first became interested in bonsai as a hobby a few years ago, I searched for youtube videos for reference. I believe the first of your videos that I viewed was of this pink pixie bougainvillea. It prompted me to really start growing bonsai trees because I already have a few bougainvillea shrubs in normal pots except that they weren't properly cared after. I removed one of the shrubs from its pot, pruned the rootball based on tips I gained from your video and re-potted it to a shallow pot. It is still in process to grow into what I hope to be a nice looking bonsai tree. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Nice to see that your pink pixie has gained a beautiful structure.
Thanks Dave, I've noticed your videos are well shot! I've seen some nice shallow depth of field work and your audio is good also. I'm using a Canon R with a 35mm F 1.8 lens, The light was just beautiful that morning!
@@TheBonsaiZone I'm using the Sony 7aiii. I love the camera. I've had some issues with my mics. But I fix it a little in post-production. One day I'll pay more for a good mic. Until then, I have a free fix, more time in post. Looks like I missed a premiere tonight. I need to catch up. Talk soon.
@@DavesBonsai That's a good setup you have, i'm using the Rode mini Pro mic, it's very good, I just leave my levels on auto and it does a good job. If there is no talking it does pick up a lot of background noise, this can be good or bad, a manual level would be better, but sometimes the easy way is best!
I Love how you meticulously care for your trees as though each one is your favorite above all the rest ... I especially Love your forests ... You and your wonderful trees have given me so much inspiration ! I love my trees ! Thank you Nigel ..
A flurry of building, Then a flurry of snow. Now a flurry of bonsai videos. Took me a couple of hours or more to catch up this Saturday morning. You look very happy NIgel and totally de-stressed now.
This is a great little tree indeed. And the pot is a fantastic match. It is really great to see how patience and perseverance can lead you to a great result.
Wow, the things we do for clip and grow! Some nice bold moves there and I'm sure the tree will be better for it. More great inspiration here. Major takeaway: just go for it!
Nigel Sir,this tree is looking better and better with each passing day! The trunk is looking quite thick, especially this year and looking quite old with your superb work. This tree is amongst one of the best that you have in your possession 👌
Hello Mark, thank you and I'm so glad to get an email from you! I really enjoyed your channel and found it very inspiring. I hope all is well and you have a great holiday season!
I love the bonsai so much. I would love to have one of these trees of my own to begin growing. Besides the Larch forest you have, this is my next favorite.
Hi Nigel. A masterful video. Beautiful bougainvillea. Excellent work where you develop the entire decision-making process, you do not neglect any aspect of the work, you defoliate with great care although you know that later you are going to prune the branches, and you end up pruning the moss with the same dedication that you started. There is the secret, and there are your trees. It is very difficult for me to achieve that serenity, thank you for helping me achieve it.
i bought my 1st Bougainvillea today from our local garden center for just £5 ( trunk as thick as my little finger ) so it has a long journey ahead of it ...thanks for your input Nigel .
Great job Nigel! Personally I would go even further and remove the two lowest branches and go for a more broomstyle looking tree. Those branches has done a great job thickening the trunk. But I also see your point... the branch taper looks fairly good and Bougainvilleas don't have a natural style because they're a vine...
Thanks Patrick, the style is a little unusual, but I don't want to make any large cuts at this point, they take so long to heal. I'll see how it goes, maybe I'll change my mind!
Lovely tree, my own bougainvillea have shed almost all leaves now. I am so worried since it is so dark this time of year too - I think Stockholm is even further north than your place. I might invest in grow light but they are expensive.. Keep up the good work and am happy you got your plant room ready to inhabit yer prescious trees :)
Hi Nigel. I have a pink Dixie bonsai that is 23 years old. I bought it just a few months ago and it’s been receiving a lot of light, and water (in California). The tree is growing well, not that many flowers but lots of leaf production. I pruned it once and it grew back in about a month and a half. I was wondering if you would suggest pruning it again every month or whether I should let it grow out. I want to increase the trunk thickness of the bonsai as it’s my hope to move it into a larger pot maybe next year or the year after to increase the size of the tree. Thank you and love your videos!
This happens with our bouginwalia in winter here in Pakistan. Our winters are mild so the bouginwalias flower again in Nov/Dec and drop off almost 90% of its leaves, Ive seen that the less i water it the more flowers grow the entire year around. It seems to thrive when stressed. Ours is in a big pot, its not a bonsai but rather a vine going over the wall to our neighbors house. This year I will take cuttings from it and try as bonsais
@@TheBonsaiZone i kind of exagerate on my descriptions sometimes, i knew you would leave enough to make a healthy tree! i figured you would of left the rest of the leaves and flowers on till they dropped naturely. great video
Hi Nigel from my understanding Bougainvillea’s only flower on new growth how do you manage to keep the trees so compact and still get it to flower ? My tree puts out long shoots and flowers at the end of those shoots. Making it difficult to maintain shape. Thanks Nigel for all the great videos.
As the tree gets older and forms more branches, the energy available for growth is distributed among all the branches. New growth is reduced and the tree stays more compact for flowering. A small pot and lots of branches is the key!
I have 1 and it does the same as yours, I am in Australia I have heard that they are semi deciduous. But mine seems to start late spring early summer and grow through the autumn and winter.
I bring my hardy trees in the unheated part of the basement for Jan to mid March. They have stayed outside all winter in the past, but I try and bring them in, it's much safer!
What kind of moss do you use/is there any that can survive in direct light? I grow my bonsai under a grow light. Out of roughly five species I've found in Ohio's climate none have lasted over a month. I do have a jade that's too big to put under my light and the moss always does fine.
I collect my moss from the cracks in the sidewalk or driveways. I find moss that's growing in full sun and use that. It does take a lot of misting in the summer to keep it green, if it dries out it can green up again with regular watering. I water my moss 2 to 3 times a day in summer and mist it even more. I always use rain water with some fertilizer mixed in.
@@TheBonsaiZone Seems so obvious now that you said where to find it. Thanks so much. Big fan of the channel and it's always awesome when the channel actually responds. You've taught me so much. It's my ultimate goal to start a bonsai business and your channel been a massive help.
Nigel…. Love all your videos. I would love to see a video on Royal poinciana if you can. I have a one in nursery pot that i got from the wild. She is about 2” thick 15-18” tall. She was a tall trunk and i cut it to about 8” and since she has recovered and sprouted nicely. I would like to see how you would work one from roots to canopy Thanks.
if i try to grow a small bonsai out of a larger leaf species, is the large leaf size gona cause a light blockage problem that will make it hard to grow a branch structure? like if im prepared for the leaves to not reduce in size, is it gona be an uphill battle, or is it just a matter of if the artist enjoys the appearance...?
Hi! I love your work! I need some help please!! I have a bougainvillea bonsai but it grows to much to the sides and it grows pretty big leaves, how can I make it to grow smaller leaves?
Beautiful tree and your plant room looks great! You look relaxed and rested after your final sprint to beat winter...great job! Do you ever leave hardier trees out on the bench all winter?
Hello Nigel , thanks again for helpful video. What I have observed in your previous videos that you don't use much of wiring to branches. You allow them to grow naturally and you prone nicely which gives them shape beautifully. Can you throw some light on this ? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I add a small amount of fertilizer to my water. Every time I water, I am also fertilizing the tree. You have to be careful that you don't overdo the fertilizer. They like warm sunny conditions to stimulate the flower formation. It is best if they are kept outdoors in the summer.
I think the problem with this tree is that the branches are to long and leggy. I think it needs the hard pruning in order to become more compact 😉 great little tree thow.
Hi Nigel. I totally agree with not having a sumo trunk (lol......nice expression). I don´t want to have any sumo trunks on my bonsai. I think it looks to artificial. Beautiful tree.
@@TheBonsaiZone* Yes me to. After my taste, i think there is to many artificial bonsai trees in exhibitions, even though i respect the many years of work they have been going through and there creative styling.
Ok I need your help. I've had my bougains for 5 years now and I needed to start allll over and cut all branches off and cut the trunk way down. Now HOW do I stop a branch from growing in length and get it to back bud? Do i just keep cutting the tiniest new leaf off? Also I'm assuming I need to get them in a real bonsai pot & soil. I'd read that a larger pot would increase trunk size faster. But I don't even care about that anymore if I can get the shape right.
8 inch is shohin range. B E A utiful bougie nigel. id love one of those cuttings haha. your son has a small one of these also right you should do a update with him. i just started getting my 9 yr old daughter into plants and trees this yr. about the same age i started helping mom and grand ma with the gardening. she has a japanese elm mame we started together just the other week
@@TheBonsaiZone youre welcome. and thanks i have a bunch of that elm some are out doors. but i leaf striped one then brought it in to over winter under my lights. thing has 3-4 inches of new growth in the past month since. thanks to YT and awesome bonsai channels like yours they will all be well im sure
Dear Nigel, you embody the true bonsai philosophy...replicate nature in miniature and not distort trees just to make them look interesting. In your tropical bonsai collection, I did not see a tamarind tree... Now that you have your plant room up, would you be up to growing one? I can send you some seeds...
