Ah...the bandaid question has been answered lol I want to thank you for the positive vibes you and Aaron share in your videos. After my husband passed away I didn't want to have any living thing around me other than my family. No pets, no plants of any kind. Because I I couldn't handle another death. You are encouraging me to grow things again and they're not only surviving but thriving, for the most part lol. So thank you again. 💚🌿🌱♥️🌻👏🤗
Monika: I can relate to your situation and reaction. Slowly, I am getting back into gardening. My faith helped me wake up and I began seeing the world in color instead of just black and white. I must say, though, seeing the natural world through the eyes of my young grandchildren was the added bonus! Of course, Laura's great, positive video's and her precious family is like icing on the cake!
Sorry for your loss, gardening may help remind you that you are still here, it’s important to continue giving love and feeling love, gardening and plants can do that. While on earth, love and receive...and think of yourself as the caretaker of God’s gifts, plants and pets are included. You can use gardening time to remember your husband, plant his favorite vegetables, or plants, and remember him when you care and enjoy them. God bless you through your loss, it is not easy.
It is okay to send a lot of information in a short amount of time! That is why we have a pause button as well as a time feature on RU-vid! So we can pause, rewind, and play again! You are such an amazing educator on how to grow our plants, we don't mind! Love learning from you. I look forward to my daily Horticulture "class". Keep up the amazing work you do.
I prefer them cleaned, chilled and wirh a salt shaker. 1. Bite into tomato. 2. Sprinkle salt. 3. Bite again. 4. Sprinkle salt again Lather, rinse, repeat.
A shout out to whomever does your video editing. They do an excellent job and it makes watching that much more enjoyable....in addition to the content, of course.
Woo Hoo, a double feature this morning to watch with my coffee. I just finished the Garden Answer Highlights re-cap and now tomato pruning. Love watching every single video! You guys totally rock it!
I once had a candle with tomato vine scent...it was one of my favorites but then I couldn’t get it anymore! It is such a unique scent that makes me think of summer too🥰
It’s so satisfying pruning tomatoes. There are so many methods of pruning and trellising out there. Just a tip, use something acidic like vinegar or lemon juice to clean off the tomato tar on your hands. Learned that from Jess at Roots and Refuge Farm and it’s a game changer! I keep a spray bottle of a vinegar and water solution by my kitchen sink all summer.
After watching this video I went right over to my tomato plants and cut them back. Found so much fruit!! Thank you Laura for showing this invaluable information on a video!!
Bless your heart. I found myself wanting to come help. That was a big job! I think a lot of family and friends are going to be happy when all those tomatoes start coming in.😍
I got a little too brave pruning my tomatoes, and accidentally cut the branches and left the suckers 😂 ..guess who felt like a sucker then 🤦🏼♀️ I even looked up how to prune first, but I have chronic fatigue which comes with cognitive issues so it was just one of those moments. I finished up all proud of myself and then looked at them and went "....oh no.." 😳 Thankfully I hadn't gone too far up so I cut the suckers off too and hoped for the best! I now have happy tomato plants with plenty of fruit, they are just very airy on the bottom half 😆
The new property is looking incredible. What a change from a few months ago! When I was watching Laura prune I was thinking about the miracle of planting a seed. Even when the ground isn't perfect the miracle of nature is. Good thought to start my day! ❤🙂
That explains the plaster/bandaid in the weekly recap video - I can't plant tomatoes, our greyhound steals the ripe ones off the plant, runs around with them in the backyard, spreading the seeds all over, then eats them lol so we have tomatoes popping up in our lawn for months!
Our dogs love them, too so we put up a plastic chicken wire fence around that area & it keeps them away. They give me the message they want some tomatoes when we're out in the yard by looking at the tomatoe plants & then looking at me. Happy to share with them since they can no longer eat all they want.
Hahaha my pug loves tomatoes too. Hes the reason I started growing them in containers. He can only reach the ones growing through the eevk, so I'll share. He checks on them all the time.
You're a lucky lady, your husband always seems to be so thoughtful and just an all around happy guy. I wish I had room for a lot of tomatoes. I only have three. Two SanMarzano and one grape tomato.
"The fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and choline content in tomatoes all support heart health. An increase in potassium intake, along with a decrease in sodium intake, is the most important dietary change the average person can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease". I like reading the health benefits while gardening!
Today's report of, "Why To Eat What Laura's Growing" has been brought to you by Ms. Mintz ! Thank You Ms. Mintz for this great info! ♡ You should make this a regular feature here in the comments!!! The title of "your segment" writes itself! I especially like reading about it right after watching the video! ♡♡♡
Coffee with Laura and a visit from Benjamin and Aaron is a nice way to start my day. Love the look of the tomato plants and that was so fun to see your face when you found the first one and popped it in your mouth!!That't the best part about gardening just picking it and eating it dirt and all!! Thank you for all the information as I know what kind of tomatoes to plant when we have our garden at the childcare center next year!!
I have never trimmed tomato plants-ever-before watching your video! I did not realize the plant produces so many suckers. What a difference this will make in producing more, and keeping my plants from getting too leggy. I just trimmed mine today and was delighted to find ripe tomatoes within the plant, too!
Thank you for your encouragement on taking care of the tomatoes. You always put a smile on my face and I look forward to seeing your gardens and learning more about the beautiful flowers. A proud Gardner from the Willamette Valley, Salem area. Bless you for your knowledge and support.
Am i only one person who use this pruning video as soothing? It is so satisfied just looking at pruning. I only have seven tomato plans to do. Hope i could pruning 30 of it!!
Thank you for this great and SO NEEDED video! My Indeterminate tomato is huge and has 3 small tomatoes! So I'm gonna prune and maybe move it in the shade some, it's in a container. Thank you for doing this! Hope you cleaned that thumb really well and it doesn't hurt too badly!! ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks Laura! We visited your parents' store last month while on a road trip. A friend mistakenly told us that Ontario is in Pacific Time; when we got there it was closed I was disappointed; it looked beautiful from the outside. God's blessings on you and your family!
I love your energy and how relatable the comment you made “ I hope that makes sense sometimes I forget what I already said” haha . You are such an engaging and amazing teacher!
Watched this video and literally went right outside and pruned back my bazillion bushes of tomatoes. Can't believe how much better they look and so happy that it's easier to scoop up the produce. Thanks for the inspiration!
This video came at the perfect time! I was just telling my husband I need to learn how to prune my tomato plants because they are looking as wild as yours were! Thanks so much for the info! I will prune this weekend 🌱
Stumbled upon your page while looking for raised bed garden help. Just wanted to say how much I love your channel and how helpful you've been. This is my 1st year in our new home and my husband built me a new garden space 25x30. A lot smaller then yours but larger than anything that I've done. Excited to view more of your videos!! Keep up the amazing work! 💚
Laura, thank so much for sharing your garden with us. I use to garden but my health has gotten to the point that I can’t anymore. I so look forward to your videos. As you were pruning your tomatoes and found a tomato I was so happy for you. I know that feeling when you find fruit you didn’t know you had. I love watching your garden and family expand.
Hi! My name is Stefanie from Omaha, NE. I have 12 indeterminate tomatoes and have been pruning once a week on average since they were planted 5/31 (bought from Lowe's since I didn't have everything I needed to seed indoors this year). This is my first year growing ANYTHING. I enjoy learning how to properly work my garden from watching your informative videos. Congratulations on the new family edition by the way!!
So I just went out and pruned my tomatoes. I am a first time tomato grower and followed your guidelines and was amazed at how much came off of them! And I also had some hidden tomatoes that I didn't know about! None ripe yet though :) Soon! Thank you so, so much for all of the information that you so freely share with us. I just love your channel! Congrats on the new baby btw!
I'm so glad you provided a video on this subject of how to prune/ "pinch out suckers" on tomatoes!! I never knew that this needed to be done. I usually plant just two tomato plants each year, in big pots, on my deck. And it wasn't until my father-in-law asked me if I "pinch" the branches/suckers. And I said "no I don't, I didn't know you were supposed to be doing that". Well, now I see first-hand how to do it. Thanks so much for sharing this information. By the way, all the branches that you cut off, can you put that tomato foliage in the compost bin? A lot of good green material there, shame to let it go to waste!
Hi I recently have been watching your videos, and can I say they have been such a great joy. During this pandemic and being somewhat isolated these videos are so engaging, and the knowledge you share is priceless. I am enjoying and have shared several of your videos with my daughters. Thank you and be well.
I'm so happy you shared this video!!! In the back of my mind, I had your video from last year in my head thinking "Lacey you've waited too long and this is just a hot mess" 😂 I'll go out today and tidy things up! ❤️
I can sure relate to pruning clipper accidents! I've cut my finger before pruning down a bunch of Iris because I was in a hurry and wasn't watching closely enough. It does happen! Just recently I was trimming the dead out of my Butterfly bush/tree overhead and dropped my clippers on the top of my foot and cut a couple of tendons to my toes! Thankfully the doctor said that they will heal but it will take a long time and I have to wear a boot to inhibit mobility. I was so mad at myself for not wearing proper foot protection! It was hot out and I was wearing sandals. It won't stop me from gardening though, I'll just be much more careful in future. Lesson learned! Stay safe and I'm praying for you and your lovely, growing family! Congratulations!
Thanks for the update!!! In humid Maryland I spend a lot of timing examining, pruning and fussing with my few tomato plants so I am super impressed by the effort it takes to maintain 30 plants!
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT video; full of information and answered every question I had!!! Best video on RU-vid I have found on this subject! Thank you so much! Your tomatoes look so much better! So cute/nice how Aaron and Benjamin make sure you have water and equipment!
Oh I was so excited when you kept finding the glorious fruit!!! Yes it does looks so good after pruning Laura!! How sweet Aaron bringing you water!! 🙏🏻
Hi Laura! This was so helpful! I've been looking at my 4 tomato plants and thinking that I really need to prune the 2 bigger ones, a Cherokee Purple and Park's Whopper Improved. The 2 cherry tomatoes are still looking ok. I've never done this before so fingers crossed! I'll probably start out going easy, then see how they look later on. Your tomatoes are looking so good! That was so sweet of Aaron and Benjamin to bring you water and extras. Thank you so much for sharing!
Excellent information on the tomato pruning! Glad to know what happened to your thumb. Was wondering after seeing your bandage in the recap video! 😂 Take care of that finger and thanks again for all the info! 🙌💚🌿🍅🍅
Tomatoes look awesome! You did great pruning and quickly. I prune also and it does make a difference. Thank you for all of the learned experiences. My first year to use The plant tone and garden tone. Great results and so healthy. I have learned lessons with too much nitrogen. Thank YOU for your learned and experienced advice. So valuable to us!!!
This is exactly what I did yesterday as my tomatoes were a mess I am reassured as many don't have fruit yet. I too also found some little cherry tomato hiding down low near the ground, yum. Thank you and hope your thumb is healing well
That was a huge job!! My favorite part was when you stopped to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Yum! My tomatoes are still tiny and green, and lots of blooms, up in Spokane. Late late this year.
Hi Laura, this was such a satisfying video to watch. I have never seen the red currant tomato plant before. It’s really pretty left unpruned. You gave me the idea to grow one for my 3 year old as he just loves tomatoes. He can eat them off the vine like Benjamin eats off the strawberry plants 🍅🍀
🍅☀️🍅 I have gardened all my life even as a small child and I’m in my 50s. This is my first year ever pruning tomatoes from watching you last year. It does allow more air flow. Not sure I am seeing more fruit yet. Will have to wait and see later in the season. Another reason you can get lots of blooms and vines is what the “signs” were in when the seed was planted. My whole family even back to my great grandparents always planted by the signs. There’s a lot of truth in planting by the signs. Since we usually purchase tomato plants and not grow them from seed, we don’t know what the sign was in when it went in the dirt. I always plant by the signs when I plant any type seeds flowers included. It can make a very big difference in how the plant performs and how much product you actually get from the plant. Great job finding ripe goodness in all those vines!!! I love 🍅🍅🍅. Happy Day!!! 🍅☀️🍅☀️🍅
Thank you for that last information regarding when to prune, bc I had plan to prune my tomatoes during a day that was over cast but rain in the forecast. You saved my tomatoes 😊
Thank you, I didn't know. I prune my tomatoes like you said. They look so much better. We also are having 85-90 degree weather. Thanks now I know why my tomatoes are not turning red right now.
I planted cherry tomatoes seeds from store bought tomatoes and was blessed with tones of tomatoes. I'm still giving them away. Recently the plants have succumbed to spider mites so I took a chance and cut all the leaves off and some branches but then we got up to 112 and lost them. I don't feel bad because I got more than I expected. Thanks Laura, I loved your story too.
Because of you Laura I planted tomatoes and strawberries in a raised bed. I can’t believe the difference in taste. I haven’t had a lot of strawberries but I am hopeful for next year. The plants look good tho.
One of the best parts of Summer is that first tomato. I have two determinate tomato plants in containers that are looking pretty healthy, except for some leaves at the bottom. They are curling inward. They are not really burning up but all the leaves in one area seem to just curl up. Thanks so much for all the excellent information.
This video has been so helpful. I ran right out and trimmed up my tomato plants and next year, I will focus my minimal planting area on Indeterminate tomato varieties. One year I literally just bought some tomato seeds from the Dollar Tree to plant along my fence and they grew great, but this year (2020) everyone was buying up all the seeds and gardening stuff from the Dollar Tree and I was too late.
You go Laura get you some, you’re such a superwoman! you tackled pruning those tomatoes like nobody’s business. Great info on pruning. It was so cute seeing your excitement when finding ripe tomatoes, made me crave tomatoes 😋. Now I know what happened to your thumb, I hope it heals fast. Aaron! you get points for bringing your superwoman some ice cold water 😄
Thank you for all your fantastic videos. I don't think I've missed a single one and many I've watched several times. My tomatoes are producing flowers but their leaves have curled up and they have very few leaves. Very little fruit is set on. They are all indeterminate and I've been watering pretty consistently and we've had plenty of rain but really hot days.
Laura you amaze me , and I saw the errors I've made in the past years😏 of my trying to grow them, thank you so much!, and I'm so happy for your blessing that God has bestowed on you Aaron and little benjerman !, 🕊🎥👒🌹🤸♀️💕🐝🤗
Such good information and well-detailed. It's always so good that you show us hands-on. I would have been scared to do this if you hadn't assured us. Thanks for all you do.
I’m a semi new gardener, this is maybe my 3rd year having a raised bed vegetable garden and thanks to alllll of your wonderful information, this will be my most successful year yet!! Especially with tomatoes! 💜💗💜
Hi Laura, this is Maria from England. I have just been to my garden awhile ago looking after my tomatoes. My first time to plant them and to be honest I did not have any idea what to do with them aside from watering and fertilising them. After watching your video, I have a better understanding now on what to do with them. Thank you for that. You are a star! :)
You've encouraged me to go trim my tomatoes. I live in Texas and I'm on my second round of tomatoes. BTW... I love Tomatoe Tone this is by far the biggest and best tomatoes I've ever grown!!
"Oh yum!" I laughed so much, that was a Benjamin moment. I wish for you all the health in the world and more, you enjoy so much what you do it makes me feel good even though my time in my garden has been gradually decreasing in the last year. Thanks for sharing all your projects with all of us.
Another awesome resource on growing tomatoes is Joe Lamp'l with his podcast and TV show. He features a man named Craig Lahuier (sp?) Who is full of knowledge and experience. Joe and Laura's info combined make for incredible gardening knowledge!
I just recently started growing tomatoes and I really love your info on how to prune them and how to take care of them right now I'm growing cherry tomatoes and the prediction is going great So I prove mine at night and I did not even know about the suckers but thank you for your info and my tomatoes are gonna be so yummy when they are fully ripe!!💗🍅😊
Picturing all your friends and family enjoying the bounty of your harvest this Fall. You will have so many eager and willing volunteers when your second sweet baby arrives. 🍅 🌻🎃
Hey! Love your videos as usual!!! July garden tour PLEASE! Its actually SUPER helpful to see what’s still blooming in the dog days of summer, and what’s not. I feel like through the years I’ve watched your Iceberg roses go and go and go! Is that true? Just a walk through tour on your highlights channel without any commentary would totally hit the spot!!! Anything!
Laura, thank you so much for explaining about "hunkering down". I have no fruit set yet. We are in zone 3 and some years we are lucky to get above 80 degrees all summer long. Not so much this year as we have had a span of 85-95 degree temps with no rain for two weeks. I guess that definitely fits the hunkering down category and would explain the lull in production. You are the bomb-diggity :^)
I could smell the scent of the tomato branches as you were cutting them. :P Talking about this with my Mom and she was saying back in the day she never staked her tomato plants or nipped the sucker branches and never had any issues with them. Just another time I guess but I remember HOW GOOD they tasted straight from the garden!! Tasted nothing like most tomatoes nowadays that seem to miss the flavor and juiciness. I do cage mine and try to prune too. Still waiting on mine but then I started late too. Thanks for your informative video again!!
Laura can afford to let her tomato plants go before she does this because she doesn't live in a humid environment. Where I am (New Jersey), if I let the plants get that big and out of control, I'd have rot or fungus or other disease. Just keep that in mind.
Thank you for this! I’m a new gardener and have learned so much from you. I went out this am and trimmed my tomatoes- I accidentally cut some fruit off and almost cried! Yikes but you assured me that I’m making the plants better. Ok. I believe you!
