Having to create an account is a deal breaker. You should not need an online account to use a printer. If they want to offer additional features that should be optional. This kind of thing is against the app store terms of service but apple never enforce their own rule on this.

This is due to the fact that you upload the mini-video's to their "cloud" which are later interactively displayed in augmented reality form. As long as they don't sell your account info to other parties I have no problems with it. I believe that if you disallow internet access you'd still be able to print.

Cascade: yeah, I won't be running out and buying this thing any time soon. A piece of hardware, whether it be a printer or something else, needs to work without any "registration" process and without some third party's "cloud". Sure they can offer optional internet based services but it can't be a requirement. And to EPDM I say that whether they sell your info or nit is irrelevant, they have no business having my info in the first place.

That is awesome! The printouts it self not, but imagine in the future having your personal pictures on your cupboard and when you look at them with your phone or google glass or anything it starts moving! Emotional overflow to see a loved one move again or something! This is beautiful in my opinion!

Good job! Loved the characters at the end... by the way I noticed the printed photos are cropped even more as compared to what's on the screen... I also wonder whether pulling down cyan and pulling up magenta in colour correction would improve printed colour. In newsprint, as in newspaper printing, we had to pull up cyan and pull down magenta each by around 20% to achieve better colour rendition. This was very typical at the time anyway.

because it uploads videos and photos to a cloud service to allow playback of AR photos, the push notifications are for when you plug your phone in to it, it needs to send a confirmation that you want to open the app (yes, that's a push notification).

As usual, a concise, thorough review. As far as the product goes, I think that the price of the actual printer to be a minor concern, the real issue on these beasts is the cost of the prints. Just short of 50 cents each. That seems a bit expensive for small poorly colored images. But then, I'm probably not the demographic it's aimed at either.

So refreshing to find someone who is big into tech who does not have a Facebook page (I don't as well). I don't know what your reason is Techmoan...but mine is that I DESPISE Facebook and the whole 'every-time-I-do-anything-on-it-it-monitors-it-and-tells-anyone-remotely-related-to-what-I-looked-at-what-I-looked-at nonsense. I realize billions love it...fine for them. I despise it.

Color shift and expensive prints has always been a part of the Polaroid experience. Photographers have both loved it and hated it since the first instants print film came out. I still have a large collection of prints from the SX 70 days with their soft focus and quirky color casts. I love looking back through them.

Ok well that AR video feature is pretty darn cool actually, I hope that sort of thing spreads out past this single device/app. Glad to see you tried two video ones at once as well, I was curious if i would play both videos at once, you didn't quite have them both fully in shot at the same time but it did seem to really lag in your demo, which is too bad.

Three comments - first, I was not impressed with the device you tested - mostly with the quality of the printed photos...but, like you, I guess I am not the demographic they are aiming for. Second, I applaud you for giving an obviously honest and not-terribly-positive review on a device the company lent/gave you to try. It must be tempting to make them happy and say nice things about their products. Third, I like ALL your muppet videos...every one I have seen (dozens of them). And this one was one of the better ones imo. Cheers.

i wonder why wouldn't the designer of this product simply make this as a standalone peripheral and write a separate app with all the features and interface wirelessly since its not powered by the phone itself. also makes more sense when they could also develop an app for Android users to capture a wider audiences.

Automatic like. I know your bread and butter Matt is reviewing new products but I know we all love your older/obsolete tech reviews with the wise, extensive research. You are the reason why I have paddle switched audio components and a basic collection of 8mm film projector and a transfer, stone knife and bear skin transfer viewer. I champ of a brother, at the other end of the country has confiscated at of the families 8mm film. seeing as we were cats and dogs and dispite over a decade my next face to face greeting would be a shot to his throat. Absolutely no criticism of your video, I really enjoyed it and it was hugely informative (especially that colour representation - shame the app doesn't let you calibrate off a test print...) As a software and hardware engineer though, I personally am not forgiving of an app which is basically a glorified camera app not working smoothly on a device of that age! The iPhone 5 is still fully supported by Apple, it seems to be that lazy software companies regularly can't be bothered to optimise for those of us who can't afford a £800 upgrade every two years. Real shame.

Love the puppets! Reminds me of my youth when other teenagers would demand that their parents buy them something or allow them to do some activity because they want to be free to choose & be individuals. However, when refused they'll then complain that everyone else has one, or is doing whatever!
