I will stand on the hill that this is the best Tales game ever made. I’ve enjoyed all of them, from symphonia to now Arise and none of them have felt has fulfilling or adventurous as Abyss. This was just about the only opening movie I didn’t skip, it’s just too good.
SAME! I can't believe how poor of a rating it has! I played almost all of the tales, and this one was my favourite by far. Such a big character development!
to me, the VERY best tales is phantasia remake(psp), with abyss coming close second in a tie with destiny remake DC. its so sad to see how much the new tales games have lost their uniqueness. i still remember getting glued to destiny 2 back in the day, now i cant be bothered to continue any of the ones on steam, now that you can play symphonia at 60 i will give it another try, but i was never a symphonia guy, always saw abyss as the far superior game.
Absolutely agree. It was the first Tales game I played and it will always be my favourite. I don't know what it is about it, but the story, characters, music.. Just everything about the game is amazing. I do love the other Tales games as well but you're right, there's something so fulfilling about this one.
@Zedrik Allen Actually, Asch was originally left-handed. But due to an incident in his life, he could no longer wield a sword in his left hand. But, yes. They are incomplete mirrors of one another, and the final line of this song is "We will become one."
I'm enamored at how Natura it looks. One sec he looks but remembered not to take his eyes off his opponent to see what he is about to do then darts to it. Gave me chills just how smooth that was.
Upper hand my butt XD i hate that part is my only problem with the intro cinematic. He swung so wide, gave so much time, and left himself completely open. In this case, high ground was not beneficial. The enemy had time to read his movement and block. He could have used any number of artes to throw him off his balance or kill Luke mid-air. Or just stepped forward and slashed him open or went under and pierced him from below. It was actually a terrible maneuver by Luke that just didn't get punished
@@QueDawg111 if it was on normal and regular ground, yes, what luke did would not been good, but the reason is because he would just have the force of his body mass and acceleration against asch who can support and push back with the strenght of his legs, people always fail to consider how impactful pushing or attacking with the strenght from the push of ones legs can be, but in this case it was a top a bridge, so the footing of Asch is less stable and we see by how the bridge breaks
This game was everything. The way it played with the genre, establishing characters who were typical jrpg tropes but subverted your expectations for them. The moral greyness of their actions. The ambiguous ending that made it feel more complete. I don't want a sequel, but would kill for an enhanced version/remake.
@@antoniogrady5954and thats all you need, not everything need to have 19390482810304939727293 diferent dilemas or characters trying to "subvert expectations", sometimes, just sticking to basics, classics and cliches, is all you need.
@@zwei3179 the tales of vesperia remaster definitely is great, but as i'm playing through it the first 5 hours or so im literally bored to death. does it get any better? please tell me because if it continues like this im definitely dropping it, combat is just awfully slow and repetitive and nothing is happening story-wise. abyss was 50 times better than this and berseria had way better combat.
@@kinazura590 I love the combat personally for tales of vesperia but that may be because it was my first tales of game (I played Abyss after this and I have yet to play Berseria yet rip) but the story does get better! I like the characters better than TotA but Yuri is one of the most relatable protagonists ever so I would advise to keep going at it :)
@@kinazura590 it starts out a bit slow you wont be getting much till the port town. Also for the combat being slow its cause you need to add skills. Skills increase the speed of things like more combo chains, using alt artes with basic artes. So you can create long strings of attacks. Tales of Ves has been seen widly the best of the tales series since it started up a well like char group. Its a slow burn at first but oh boy it will be picking up
It's a shame that in Eng ver we didn't have a chance to listen to the full Karma by Bump of Chicken. Bandai Namco clearly doesn't know their audience. Still my favorite Tales and Tales OP ever.
I thought it might've been a licensing thing, like BOC didn't want their full song used in the American release or something. I agree though, the full song is much better than the guitar playing that we got.
The original ToS on the gamecube had some random instrumental for the opening instead of the original Jpop song. Same thing with Legendia. At least with abyss the instrumental was jsut the instrumental of the original song. I don't think it was until Vesperia did they actually keep the original song (in this case the singer just sang it in English). It basically took them 4 games until they realized that the fans want the original song.
true, because it's classic, it has some romance in it, and great character development. I just finished xilia too, it has great story too i admit, but abyss is better i guess.
I can agree that I absolutely love Tales of the Abyss more than any of the other entries Symphonia has a special place in my heart as well as Tales of Graces f I have played almost every entry and those three are the ones that stand out to me.
For me this Tales is the best from all series , just look at those amazing characters and Luke character development on story it just perfect . I really want a remake or remastered of this game for ps4, xbox and switch.
i would kill for a remake of phantasia, it still astounishing how many people havent played it due to being japan only, the destiny remake is also insanely good, but also locked as a ps2 japan game. they did release symphonia and vesperia, so here's hoping they go back and rerelease the other ones. really hoping 4th time is the charm for phantasia(well technically 5th).
Oh my God. After watching this opening for more than 10 years, I finally noticed that there is a sparkle on Van’s teeth at the corner of his mouth at 0:28.
I guess it's to make him look either dashing, or cocky? And if it's the former? Then that's certainly a stark contrast to how he ends up later in the story.
Best main character development, but symphonia blows this out of the water for the party chemistry. I could have held Miu under water until he stopped, and the little girl constantly going after Luke until the latter half was grating
2021, still the best opening on the whole license to me. Can't watch it without always getting those chills before Tear's sheer beauty under the moonlight, and those last notes.
Thanks to the team who undubbed the game. I'm playing the ps2 Rom right now and I have such a great time. I've played every tales game released on modern hardware and this story so far is definitely one of the better ones.
I fkn love Tear-san man. She is legit my ideal girl. Strong and independant, has a ridiculously cute soft spot for cute things (cant describe how much I love this gap moe of a strong girl that just melts for cute things) and above all is unwaveringly loyal.
@@Markeeyon I'd recommend going to Vg emu for newbies for help with emulation, it's how I got help setting up emualators. They also provide bios files for the emulators that need them.
Listening this after 12-13 years. Almost forgot about this suddenly saw the word Abyss & remembered I used to watch an anime named something Abyss.. Eventually found it❤. It's been a long time 😁
I really love how in older tales of openings you can at least get a bit of a grasp of what kind of characters you're dealing with or their relationships with each other, sometimes even including scenes that happen in the game, but not giving context so that you're left to wonder. I find that ever since Ufotable took over animating for tales that element is lacking a little and starting with Zestiria it even seems almost completely devoid of it. I wish for modern tales of games to have more of that again.
It is, after the reveal about her royal status. The people of the city stand up for her, and the difference is it’s the entire party being chased by Kimlascan Knights rather than just Luke and Natalia
I vaguely remember playing this game, yet I can't remember any single thing from there. Or maybe I never played it in the first place. But the weird thing is this opening lives rent free in my mind for 20 years. When I discovered this opening again recently, I remember every beat and rhythm of it. It's si freaking weird.
It would be great, if this game gets a remaster! Luke is one of the best main characters of the entire series. And he got a real relationship with the female main. I can hardly remember any other character with such an relationship in other tales of games.
If we're gonna be talking about Protagonist/Deuteragonist relationships in this place. I speak up for Stahn & Rutee from Tales of Destiny ..despite not having played it yet. After all, they get married and have a kid together.
This is sick that I feel like I had been through the memories of playing a good game in my childhood just listening to this song...though I've never played this game before😂
The first and the only tales game i've played. And it was awesome. This music really send shivers down my spine. Im glad this was one of my childhood games
Back in the days when life was simple, and all that was before us is what to eat, when to sleep, and our old legendary consoles :) The world has certainly changed!
I played this game for the first time in 2009 and finished it few times ever since. And yeah, I can say it's the best JRPG I have ever played in terms of story.
I mean, they're both great games, so in the end it's all subjective, but I gotta disagree. Mainly because I found Abyss' party to be really unlikeable by the end. They're just such jerks to Luke, and never take any responsibility for how horribly they treat him after Akzeriuth. That's just me though, I know it didn't bother most people nearly as much, but it's hard to enjoy a story when you dislike most of the main cast.
I’m still hoping for an HD remaster on PC, I just finished my first playthrough of Vesperia (currently grinding the colosseum to max out the Fell Arms for everyone before I start doing the side quests) and id absolutely love to revisit a classic
It is the best tales game hand down it's only real comption is Symphonia and Vespira and I haven't finished Symphonia but it's pertty good but Vespira has a eh villian unforantly because the characters outside that are good
@@swordsmancs honestly if you like vesperia, you'll like Abyss since they aren't much that different in term of grapichs and if you want you can use emulator to enchance the visuals
I miss this game, the story, the OST, the characters, the battle mechanic, they are all unique for its time. You can actually feel it, this game is really well made, it was so good back that they even made an anime for it. This game already had elemental resonance way before Genshin Impact even done any of those things. I really wish there was Tales of Abyss 2, when Luke have changed in person, he looks so dam badass, I want to bring the entire party on an adventure again. Current game characters are just so bland, pacing and progression are so bad, characters have no depths, VA have no emotions. But oh well, we are grown up now, time to move on. Memories are always sweet, so I will just go listen to Tear singing her hymn to feed my nostalgia. See ya fellow gamers.
You don't want the sequel, it never works in tales games. Symphonia was incredible, it got a sequel, I only knew about it years after it launched, for good reason.
I really like Fujishima's character designs, I hope this gets game gets a remaster. Heck, I'll be happy with a Switch port of the 3DS version (as I've only played the PS2 version)...
