Great video as usual Felix! 19:10 I really think it depends on the flux you're using. I reball RSX with NC-559-V2-TF and one layer of flux and all ball sit into place perfect and no need to apply another layer. 32:00 Damn I gotta start showing the stress tests now hahahahaha.
Yeah, I was using this fake stuff that came with a reballing kit. I later switched to kingbo (also came with reballing kit, but is much better. Albeit smelling of cancer). But still, the pads start to dry out and I can see the bottom of the ball merge with the pad, but not center. When that happens I have to add a second layer of flux and reheat. I thought I needed to do it all in one step to keep the heat I use on the chip to a minimum. While that does matter, it's not like I'm going to murder the chip like I was fearing. They can take more than I was thinking. So I had to get out of my head about it and let the chip dictate the heat it needs to be reballed. And not worry about it.

I don't have a PS3, I never owned a PS3 (or anything past the PS1), I never repaired a console in my life (only maintenance, for what is worth.) I don't think I'll ever repair one either, let alone a PS3, yet, you are so good and informative when doing these videos that I subbed and I watched them all so far. Keep up the amazing work!
Please keep uploading, I have a backwards compatible PS3 that just needs a new Blu-ray drive and you're giving me the confidence to actually go tackle that repair

That's exciting! I've been thinking it would be cool to go back a get an EE, but IDK. The hobbist level offers the freedom to choose my desired direction. No deadlines that detract from the enjoyment. But a formal education does give you a broader base of fundamentals that you can draw on. Or at least in the back of your mind maybe kinda remembering "somthing." Then the next time you see it or do a little digging it jogs your memory. Like, "oh yeah, I think I remember learning that school." More than anything it instills dicipline and confidence. If you can acomplish that, you can push through any project. That's what the piece of paper says to prospective employers. When I look at my degree, I think about how hard I worked for it and feel proud. It gives me confidence. But it doesn't really prepare you for the specifics of any 1 job. Just gives you the confidence and wear withal to learn. Anyway, sorry. Probably TMI. GL to you on your next chapter!

If you want some unsolicited advice: Be prepared to fall into the Valley of Despair (see 10:01) many times and make sure to draw from the community (fellow students) and you should be able to reach your goal. As Felix said, studying may not feel "real enough", so if you can find the time, do passion projects on the side.

I have one of those. I bought it from ebay for 50 dollars that said it didn't turn on. When I came in I hooked it up and it turned right on and had the original 2007 firmware on it. I put a disc in and it didn't work. This ps3 was clean. I'm assuming someone bought it and the disk drive died and they stored it somewhere dry. It was in perfect condition and never opened. Well I replaced the disk drive in it and it runs perfectly. Doesn't get loud or anything.
I love your editing style on this. the constant self deprecation is how I feel when I work my way into a worse situation by thinking I'm making it better haha
I'm happy to say I've fixed two PS3 thanks to your info & PCBs you made. However I'll like to know that both are ones that only got YLOD in games like "The Last of Us" but are PS2 BC models.
This is actually giving me confidence in repair! I'm still a beginner, but this is showing me that I can Improve! I need to give it some hard work, but it can yield better skills, and more fixed consoles. Keep making vids :D

How much time I lost following those fix guides from forums, but more I lost explaining why they are wrong - and it's harder, and people will still believe the crowd because it's crying louder than me, and their method is much simpler to understand: get your magic stick ready, pronounce REBOLLUS MAXIMUS and say goodbye to some of your $$ bills. Your video’s on the PlayStation 3 and the 360 documentary is really getting me right back into wanting to learn about soldering, best capacitors if needed, reballing and in general, hardware failures and the stuff required to fix some of them with consoles, namely the PS3. My dad showed me your PS3 documentary and l don’t remember the last time l watched a series of videos and the time flew by without me knowing lol these videos are great Felix, you done a really good job with them and l learned a ton from these! Hope to one day work on fixing PS3’s and diagnosing them some time soon! (gotta learn to solder eventually lol)

Great stuff and dedication. I remember the board, yea. It makes sense the logic gates blew because with the missing resistor the voltage controller overloaded them. It raised the voltage and current, but the gates can only take 50 mA on the input and 25mA on the output, which is a lot less than any other component in that power line. I think on the Cell side they also shorted at the output. My case deviated later on ... Wish I had your energy to make a similar video since I had to additionally redraw the green mask with the curing ink. That took a while...
Really enjoy watching the story of your findings and work and also felt your pain as you sigh in the moments the ps3 was being a jerk but glad you came out the victor.
This is the path I almost went on. I was doing a lot of game console repairs between 2016 - 2018. Most of my repairs were of Nintendo DS and DS Lite. I played around with a PS3 YOLD and was successful with a heat lamp method. I didn't think it would work, but it did. After a couple of tests, it failed. So I redid the heat lamp method to get it to work just so I could sell it while it was still working, but I decided not to sell it after watching a couple of videos that popped up on my feed. I did some more research and realized that the rabbit hole would be too much for me to undertake. I was in the midst of trying to finish my college degree (Computer Information Systems) and going down this rabbit whole would have taken up too much time.

We're in a better position to diagnose and repair the YLOD now, than we were before the SYSCON errorlogs. But "permanant?" No. Plenty of other ways the YLOD can happen that stump us. As you can see in this video, that 2110 stumped me for long stretches of time. Took 2 years to complete that repair cuz I ran out of things to try and waited for more ideas, inspiration, some nugget of info that gave me something to tyr.

I was given a 60gb that has the ylod. I tried the caps myself and didnt get any results. I have a A01 and a E01 both if which are backwards compatible and well taken care of. So it wasnt a big deal but it would be great to get it repaired non the less. But your persistence to fix this thing is amazing.
Nothing is irrepairable with the right skills, testing, and parts. GPU and CPU replacements are huge. Or for older systems custom ICs in general. Hell, nowadays we can aquire solid performing FPGAs and laser custom PCBs easily. That said, obv this was a complicated problem and you killed it! Awesome vid (i caught super late lol)
@@ripfelix3020 I'm just no technical engineer, but i went on the PS3 Tokin fix-wave, and fixed just 1 out of 4 consoles with the tantalums. I never went so deep to understand the processes or read syscon codes. After watching and reading your findings - I believe it was sheer luck, and I have no idea if the console worked after 2 weeks. Never bought another console when I found your huge-ass post :) Thanks, and again, well done
Im waiting on my cp2102 atm to see whats the error code. Like everyone I was going to change the tokin without testing anything. I heard of your video and watched it all (1 and 2) and im glad I did it. I have a late ylod so im pretty sure ill have to find a 65nm to revive my old phat model. this video was so motivational and inspiring, its not just an educational tech stuff, the story of fixing a console you tought was unfixable is seriously impressive and i cant wait to someday challenge myself with a repair like that someday, although i think a ps3 would be way out of my league besides its not my favourite console, still your efforts makes me really hope that someday i could fix my fav console despite thinking its imposible

I'm going through this process right now with my old PS3 slim I just pulled out of the cupboard after several years and recently buying a PS5 which reignited my interest. Of course the thing was doing the the 3 beep thing. I'm no slouch when it comes to SMD repairs and after reading parts of that thread while researching I was horrified at the misinformation and how easily people jump on the band wagon. These people just throw shit at the wall to see what sticks.

6:30 I believe you mean "less in the past Felix here." 31:36 Lol, I bought a PS2 slim off of CL (no mention of any defects) for 10 bucks thinking I got a steal. Took it home, plugged it in, and nothing, not even a power light. Took it apart and tried to see if I could diagnose any of the components, but I'm a complete amateur, so that was a dead end. Then, as I was doing the reassembly of shame, I noticed the power/eject ribbon cable looked kinda funky. Upon closer inspection, it appeared as though the previous owner had ruined the original and then tried to shave down a wider one and jam it in. One quick month long 40 cent AliExpress shipment later and I was in business. Couldn't do the FMCB process on my own because something in the disc drive is fucked and I don't want to make things worse. But hey, now I have a perfectly good way to play PS2 games.

This video hits me on an emotional level. I bought my launch model day one, and yes, I got the ylod over a decade ago. I'm just waiting, hopeful that some passionate people with a very high skill set will come up with an actual answer after almost 2 decades of ylod. Ps3 is, imo, the greatest console ever made, and I'm just hopeful to get mine working again one day.

Our ps3 fat is broken. It started as you said with games fully utilizing the pa3's power, Last Of Us and GT6. Then it wouldn't even make it to the menu. Super sad for me, my father and my brother. This was our childhood. I just wish I could repair it and be able to jump in and play these game again. But I can't. I can only hope that the ps6 has backwards compatibility and that it includes the ps3 games. It won't be the same sure, but it would mean the world. RIP PS3 FAT EDITION. you will be more than missed. I only realize how sad this is after writing this. It hurts man. You just can't re-live moments like these. I Wish I had spent more time with it when I could. I was just a kid having fun. I Wish I knew.
As someone who made a "Frankenstein" 360 out of parts any sane and normal being would have thrown it in the nearest garbage.... I feel how it is to troubleshoot, be excited only for it to die the next day. My next step is getting a new Rhea in there when I have the time and money. It's the one 360 unit that'll probably come to the grave with me.
