Excellent tutorial! Covers every single detail, perfect angles, and incredibly easy to follow along to as long as you pause. It has been a while since I've taken apart one of these phat PS3 consoles, just used this video to clean up and repaste my CECHA01! To anyone skeptical about doing this: Watch the video once all the way through so you know what to expect. It's only 15 minutes, just do it. As long as you pause while you're actually taking everything apart, this is pie.
Tutorial works great, but then I'm freaking out when trying to take the CMOS battery out to get to the motherboard and replace the thermal paste. I don't want to pull the connector off the motherboard. Any thoughts? Also, did you replace the CMOS battery as well? I know Sony pulled back recently on ending PSN support to the PS3, but I wouldn't doubt this is something that happens down the line. I just want to be able to access the PSN store and download games before they decide end PS3 support and I think a non-functioning CMOS battery may prevent me from doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Mr. Mario I recently encountered the 'eraser mod' that claims to significantly cut down on the temperatures of the CPU. People are putting erasers in their console to apply more pressure to the cooling area. Some people point to this video as proof that this mod is even applied by Sony themselves as at 8:51 you can see the plastic cover that they used. Any thoughts on this mod? It seems like a recipe for disaster to me.
It is REALLY the best step by step teardown and reassemble video. I bought a used PS3 6 months ago and this is my first ever PS3. I noticed the fan was doing crazy noises and it was getting really hot so I found some thermal paste from a friend and started working. It was the first time it was ever taken apart and I could tell cause some stickers were brand new and the screws were very tight. Also pretty dirty inside. After 8 hours I think it paid off.
I haven't powered on yet but I have repasted using only this video and didnt feel lost once. The editing is perfect and makes it easy to skip back and fourth. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this.
Thank you!!! My PS3 sounded like a hair dryer after being on for 20 minutes. This was was the first time I had ever taken one of my consoles apart. I’d never changed thermal paste before. Now my PS3 is running and it’s so quite I can hardly hear it. I can’t believe it’s the same console! Thank you so much this really helped me out!!!
Literally the best tutorial to take apart an original ps3, I was able to replace the thermal paste and fan of my launch model ps3 using this video. Thank you!
This was a GREAT tutorial!! I just got my hands on a CECH-A01 and it’s absolutely filthy but it works and I want to tear into it and clean it all out. This was really great to watch. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks so much to the creator of this video. This guide looks perfect. I'm a tech noob, so it was really important for me to be able to see everything clearly, step by step, and for parts to be labeled. I just bought a PS3 fat that overheated and shut down on me before I really got the chance to play anything, so once my thermal paste arrives I plan to pop the console open, clean out dust if I see any, and replace the thermal paste.
Superb tutorial. Very easy to follow, zooms in on everything you need to see in detail, highlights when there are different (short/long) screws and where they go, shows the full rebuild too instead of just saying 'put it back in reverse order'. Really great, thanks!!
Absolutely stellar video. I can't thank you enough. I did want to say that the little metal Torx security screw holder lays flat sideways behind the plastic not clipped onto it. -It can only go in one correct way for the lid to fully slide over and line up. -I hope this helps someone. Other than that this video is perfection. Thank you... thank you... thank you
Love you man! Took apart my Ps3 phat bout 5-6 months ago, and never put it back together... until today! Gonna start her up and hope for the best! Thanks for the video!
@@ConnorSeals yes, however I got another use E01 and attempted to Delid both RSX and CPU. I think I killed the RSX because of how I was trying to lift off the IHS.
Great tutorial, followed it on a granny-owned a01 model I just picked up. One suggestion though, I took out the 2 screws for the card reader and left it attached to the top. Made it come apart and go back to her way smoother. Thanks for the great video.
Excellent video. I really appreciate the annotations that point out where the screws go, and how many there are. Just one point though, this is for an 80 GB bacwards compatible Phat PS3. The mother board for these 80 GB models is the COK-002. The 60 GB and 20 GB models have motherboard COK-001. All of these have the 4 USB connectors.
I finally did this! Had to put new thermal paste and thermal pads on the ic's etc. Wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for your amazing video. The ps3 is running quietly and cooler than before. Thanks!
Love the video, I used it and benefited much from it. I noticed one tiny not super important detail at the end, the torx screw holder was placed incorrectly. Doesn't affect anything, just thought you might want to know.
Thank you my man, was reassembling a 06 60GB and was TERRIFIED that I was going to break the cover, you showed me exactly how to do it and I appreciate that 😅👌🏼
Thank you a lot for this professional tutorial you made me feel less scared for this model of PS3 i purchased one of these last month. me and my dad sat down and tore it apart and applied new Arctic MX-4 thermal paste i also installed a APS-231 PSU and a EZ Chill fan controller this PS3 already had a 19 blade fan and it had a 320gb drive in place of the original 60gb unit. with everything in place you helped me get an ultimate PS3 i also watched your PS4 original video because i have one that i'm getting ready to sell because it turned out to be a bigger disappointment than my PS3 for me at least and i already have a Xbox One S. Thanks for the great video and i like the music you chose for this video.
I love watching this video for the music and because i love these 60GB PS3's i still have the one that i fixed but we had a house fire on Nov 28 2018 it still turned on and showed video after it dried out. but now the disc drive is broken and won't take discs thank god the replacements are cheap for this model and a friend of dad's gave me another 60GB PS3 that still had the seal on it and never got the yellow light of death but i plan to do the same i did to my first one. again thanks for the video.
An awesome very in-depth detailed & thorough video. I’ll be using this as a point of reference for tearing down, maintaining and resembling my own fat PS3 in the very near foreseeable future. Thank you very much for taking the time to make it! 😄🤘🤘🎮
I needed this. My PS3 sounds like a jet engine and it's overheating. And thanks for providing links to the tools. I don't have one of those security drivers.
I'd say this is the best disassemble and reassemble tutorial you can find on fat PS3. Two small issue, 12:40, the card reader should go onto the top housing first, you will find the top housing will ban on the memory card eject button when you try to close it like in the video. and the metal screw holder 13:40 should go sideway.
Great video!!! Helped me alot!! Just want to point out that the screw holder for the security screw was place back in wrong, it should be placed sideways and behind the plastic slot in the top, not over it, took me forever to figure out why my top cover wouldn't slide into place and fit flush.
Ill be doing this in the near future, but this video is great and shows its not going to be to much of a pain in the arse, will be nice not to worry about it cooking itself to death anymore
Turn the temperature up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Relax. The oven will not reach this temperature. Take a seat on the floor and watch the thermometer. Once the needle rolls to approximately 460F, turn off the oven an throw open the door. The thermometer will rise a few degrees before it falls. Do not panic. Take a box fan, osculating fan (set to not osculate), or similar, put it on its lowest setting, and place it OUTSIDE THE EDGE OF THE OVEN DOOR TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT, NOT DIRECTLY IN FRONT, WITH THE FAN BLOWING AIR AWAY FROM, I REPEAT, AWAY FROM THE OVEN, AND NOT NOT NOT INTO IT. The idea here is the pull hot air from the face of the oven, without creating any significant disturbance to the motherboard within. This will speed up the cool down, as explained in the theory. Once the board is close to room temp, feel free to remove it. Congratulations! You've re-flowed your PS3.
Thanks for the help!, Cleaned my backwards compatible ps3 and gave it some fresh cooling paste. First refurb since the release of it :P Small thing, my card reader was attached to the top lit. so that part was a bit diffrent then yours
This is by far the best tutorial of the original ps3 I've seen. I now have put on artic mx-2 thanks to this tutorial...however it's still loud😅 I dunno maybe it takes time for it to settle?
This tutorial looks super helpful. I just got a CECHA01 PS3. It looks like it was well taken care of, not a single scratch. I was wondering if you used a CECHA01 as well, I am new to this so I can't tell. I want to change the thermal paste since I don't want to run into any problems. I was also wondering if you recommend changing the fan to a 19 blade fan and changing the battery that it's in the green-looking sleeve thing. I will appreciate any tips!
I dont remeber the model exactly, but you shouldnt run into any major differences, I would suggest just opening it and replace the thermal past, a bigger fan might help slightly but would make a big difference in cooling. Changing the battery is good idea.
Bought a backwards compatible for 100 dollars for parts. Seller said he tried to fix it because it was overheating and shutting off. I followed the tear down and saw that he had already replaced the tokin capacitors and changed out the thermal paste but he forgot to plug in the heat sink fan lol. Now I gotta put it back together
great except for the very end, the little metal thing goes in the hole sideways, not laying on the opening. if you screw it in like the video the top plate wont be flush with the main body
Prevent yellow light of death forever it's called water cooling and it's super easy to do. I would suggest water Cooling to anybody who hasn't had the yellow light of death yet or has had the yellow light of death but has recently had their PS3 reballed. I would also suggest you buy a broken 60 GB off eBay which they are super cheap like less than 60 bucks take that apart test all of your water cooling equipment your Blocks Your loops so you don't fuck up on your good PS3.
I got a retrocompatible ps3 for 20$ with ylod. The past owner butchered it. I hope I can revive it. Im a xbox 360 fanboy but damn this console is well built !
TheRandomname951 So far no, the board is damaged ( melted plastic, black tar like stain on the traces). I’l try to buy on ebay a non-retro motherboard(ylod) and swap part and do a proper reballing of the cpu/gpu... 🤒😷
TheRandomname951 What I done, is delide the gpu/cpu , did a reflow and now I get a blinking red light instead of the ylod. The ribbon cable for the front panel board is missing and I made my own out of the blueray ribbon cable ( hard to get a good connection to power up the console). So my next step, is to order a replacement cable from ebay and see how it goes.
Nice Teardown, but people still believe that ofen will fix dead gpu chips these days make no sense to me. The Bonding inside the Chip itself is broken, so this will just help for 2 Weeks. Then you will have the same problem again. But still a very, very nice teardown.
Great Video detailing the differnt screws and ribbon cables. After applying new paste, what kind of temps does a Fat PS3 idle and operate under? My Fan is loud and idling at 54°C I'm sure it's time to follow the guide but what temperatures should I be expecting after?
Good vid but at the end when u put the cover the metal peace were the torx screw goes in is the wrong way the cover wont go on right it goes side ways in the back and make sure ppl u dnt bend that peace make sure the gap is open
I really need to reapply new paste on my Ps3 but i keep putting it off because it seems like it's easy to forget where screws go. Taking it apart seems easy but putting it back together is God level hard lol
my ps3 fat look different to yours im not sure why. anyway i was able to disemble, clean the best i could, and repaste the two chips. Plus i got one extra screw after reassembling!
The screws for the memory card port should have been taken off along with the others from the top of the housing to avoid prying open the clips to release.
