My friend got in contact and asked if I'd like to take a look at his boss' faulty PlayStation 3 (PS3). To of which I responded, of course. The PlayStation was going straight into the bin, so that's why I've taken it on. I always confirm with friends that I'll take a look, as long as they know that there is a 99% chance I will break it 😂

Hey mate, great attempt. The sad thing is the information about the heat "trick" online is bull. Obviously people learning don't realise, but the information is based on the "luck" of a few people who got it working for a long time and the hope of the rest of us. The chips need either reballing or replacing. A lot of the time the issue is internal, not an issue with the solder balls. Gutted for ya though pal

Really good to know mate. I've got some replacement NEC Tokin Caps to replace the old ones. Would this make a difference at all? I saw that Vince replaced those caps once and managed to get it working, but maybe my issue is specifically with the bigger chips

@@JoeyDoesTech I'm not too sure really bud, not done much research with the ps3 because I can't make it a viable repair. I know the NEC Tokins do fail but I'm not sure under what scenario. New Retro Repair may be able to help with that mate

Ohhh man. I was so pleased when it booted. I've done a few PS4s with the blinking light and always tell them that it might last a day or it might run for ever. Just no knowing on these things.

My ps3 have a same problem like that. And here in my city every ps3 technician refuses to repair my ps3, they reasoned that it was difficult to repair and even if they could, 3 months later it would be broken again. After seeing your video i will try to fix it myself, thank you very much

there is no need to heat you need to add just one tentalum cap beside of nec tokin and it will work fine,heating can only fix this for one day only

Joey the black capacitor that bubbled all need replacing ! Also one of chips needs the metal shield taking off and new thermal paste up on then metal back on if I remember its the left hand side one from memory 🤔

Man this PS3 went to hell with FIfa inside at first time Joey fixed it and then played fifa for little bit PS3 again stopped working Coincidence? I don't think so Or there were not IPA used :3

Oh so sad it failed again, but as you said, better it failed before the customer got it back. Would have been embarrassing and a hassle. I have never dabbled in electronic repair, so this is above any skill level I have. Hopefully I can find a machine that still works to replace mine.

It's all part of the practice 😊 I still have this PS3 sitting around, and I'm going to change out the other RAM chips to see if I can get it working 🤣 This was just a friend of a friend, luckily I don't do customer repairs otherwise it would have been even worse! Thanks for watching Mark :)

Hiya really good channel and im really enjoying your videos. Im new to all this and was just wondering how you got into this and do you have any hints or tips for a beginner like myself (ie would taking apart nintendo ds be a good starting piont for someone like me)

Heya Mark! Yes mate, I started with Nintendo DS Lites as they're fairly cheap to pick up off Ebay with faults. From there I started learning what fault was what, and started changing out faulty screens. I love the hobby and would recommend giving it a try :)

Mark, check out the equipment videos by Joey and Stezstix Fix. Also read my "Electronics For The Lesser Knowledgeable" series on my channel. Stock up on soldering basics and practice on predestined electronic projects with full size components. Next move onto DS Lites as they are sensibly priced whilst investing in a cheap Triwing screwdriver set (Zedlabz do a Nintendo set with spludgers). Depending on the DS issues you come across, you may want to try SMD micro component project boards (again showcased by Joey and Stez). Any issues, join Joey's Discord and keep watching these guys, The Retro Future, My Mate Vince (and his recommendations of fix it RU-vidrs) and other channels by Joey's troupe such as Philip Bryden. Go for it buddy, good luck and may the force be with you! 🤘😎

the chips you overheated are tantalum capacitors vince did a vid on the same issue and fixed it by changing them on both sides of the board

@@JoeyDoesTech vince replaced all the tantalum caps and it got rid of the red light and the console worked but then vince killed it after trying to change the thermal paste under a difficult sheild as the fan was noisy the vid is on his trying to fix series he also shows you what capacitors he replaced them with i hope that helps i would like to see a revisit and a victory for you

Great video. Just a little advice, you see the black chip over there? Its the ram bro and trust me you don’t want much heat on it else you might solve the problem and then run into another problem which is no display on your tv set even while ps3 is powered on. Great video once more

I had this issue and talking it apart with no heat managed to get it working, before it failed again. The issue is therefore not the solder balls, it is something intermittent that is fixed temporarily when the console is dissembled.

Great video , I did this for my son about 10yrs ago. Ps 3 lasted for 2 wks then same thing happened. I think with these if have them horizontal they work fine for years . As soon as you store the vertical they over heat and it’s game over

@@JoeyDoesTech my son had his for 2 yrs horizontal, we moved to Aus and he put it vertical within a month it had yellow light of death . I kept mine horizontal and it still runs today never been opened

Tried this same fix, possibly from another video, and it did the trick! After about 2 months, of light use, the flashing red light is back and it shuts down after a few seconds of being booted up. Also I just tried with another HDD but think it’s finally dead.

That'll teach me for commenting until the end. That PS3 can still be fixed with a reball and those capacitors needed replacing anyway. Hang onto it if you can. Nothing has been lost here.

The proper way to fix these is to reflow cpu and gpu and use flux while reflowing that would be the problem almost all the time reflowing the nec tokin will not work and if it does it will be temporary if reflowing cpu and gpu does not bring it back to life then replace nec tokin with 470 uf capacitor and also remove the heat spreaders as well this will help the console cooling just putting new thermal on top is not good you must do an top and underneath

You need it to switch the chips that you heat it and then it should of work. I think the chips gave up

These old ps3s are so fragile… ive done several of these and ive done the heating method and more often than not it helps. Buts its just a bandaid.. best way is a reball but even now a days.. shops just dont do it anymore.. which is a shame cause theres really no other way to play ps3 games. Just fixed up a japanese ps3 so fingers crossed it stays workin

@@JoeyDoesTech ya quiet a few. I have many pictures of each of them. Umm way worse than the one you worked on. I can name a good hand full that were for sure YLOD prone. Upon cracking them open they look as if they sucked up a cat… dust and hair and everything clogged.. burn damage!? The lot.. never fails to amaze me. And luckily some of those run just fine after a good clean and theres others that just need the chips heated up like you tried. But in the end some of them are just so far gone theres really nothing one can do..

Man mine turns on and it will shut off with the red light of death after loading a game. I took it apart and cleaned as well as new thermal paste and still the same problem.

Ah man; that is frustrating. I wonder if it's an intermittent fault like my Canadian PSP (don't ask - I bought it boxed and with a memory for gert cheap [a tenner I think] a few years ago in the Welsh valleys, wrongly assuming an official UK charger meant it was from our region...). My PSP 1001 will run for hours, refuse to turn on or fail switch off after the Sony Computer Entertainment screen; "are ya feelin' lucky, well do ya?". It ain't the battery as it works perfectly in a PSP 1003, charging well in both consoles. A project I've put on hold... Anyhow, I'm rambling now, so I'll save it for Discord one day. At least you know the optical drive and hard drive work fine. 😁 The fact it worked at all means there can't be much wrong. Those gremlins tend to be a nightmare to iron out though. 😬 On the opening montage, was that the Grange Hill theme? 😜 Of course not. A show of hands who cleans out their consoles. 🙋‍♂️ But only when they play up. 😲

I've just been given a backwards compatible ps3. Mine comes back on after it goes off with a red flashing light. What type of shop do I look for to have a look at it.

You can reheat these chips and the YLOD will return. The only fix is to reball the GPU.

Whoever designed the original PS3 needs to be fired... out of a cannon. The Slim and the Super Slim were huge steps up in terms of design and longevity. The originals were just too unreliable.

The originals were backwards compatable with ps2. Back compact Ps3 are far more valuable than the slims and super slims. This is a bodge fix nall and had basically no chance of holding. I used to have to bodge fix Ps3 and xbox 360 every few hours back in the day, in the end without a reflow station you might aswel just throw it in the bin

this is caused by a bad nvidia chip not those capacitors. you can try to replace them but dont expect a long term fix. the only proper fix is to replace that gpu with a new one or a 45nm one from the slim ps3
