As a lifelong Xbox fan, I must say that it is absolutely amazing that Sony, a company less than a TENTH of the size of Microsoft, has been able to dominate the largest entertainment market in the world for so long. They really do understand what players want.

Sony has always focused on not just the development of their consoles but also how consumers enjoy the game. The evolution of the DualShock is what gave birth to what we now have, the DualSense.

E3 2013 was a straight up massacre. My god, Sony was savage AF and went straight for the throat.

Xbox hasn’t recovered from this to this day. The only downside I had with the PS4 was how clunky the OS was. It was laggy, and unresponsive. They addressed that with the PS5 it is much smoother now. My only gripe is pressing the ps button gets you to a control center instead of going to the home screen. This is confusing coming from a ps4 :/

As a fan of all systems, and mostly an Xbox player who started with PS2, its crazy to see what gaming has become. The only thing I will never understand is gamers animosity towards their non preferred consoles/systems. This documentary, and the PS3 vs 360 one are some of the best documentaries ive seen. I love almost everything Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and others have put out. They are all quality platforms. The leads went from ps2, then 360, then ps4, and im curious to see which one is gonna lead this new generation. Though I have no animosity toward either, this will definitely be interesting. Edit: after seeing the comment section, I think its funny how some people think people only buy one console. Almost everybody I know own most xbox and playstation and nintendo consoles. The only Consoles I dont own are the og xbox and ps3. I have played them and owned them in the past. Most of the game players I know own at least one of each. I see the argument that “youve never experienced our games so you wouldnt know.” Most of us have, and like them, we just prefer one over the other, but still use the other. Especially the exclusives, I think god of war, uncharted, and many other PS games are amazing. I also think Gears of war, halo, and many others are amazing. It just comes down to preference. Both companys and their systems have had really high highs and super low lows. Like ps3 launch being horrible, and xbox one launch being just as bad. Eventually, both consoles became amazing and gave their competition a run for their money. I hope neither company’s, as well as Nintendo, dont ever become obsolete or go out of business. Though eventually, some and even maybe all will, especially with how PC is nowadays. Each company, and their respective fanbases, deserve the best.

As of writing this comment,it is October 11th,2020 (Malaysian Time Zone) PS4 had sold 113 Million unit. Xbox One had sold 48.22 Million unit. (NOTE: I took this data from Google and therefore,it might not be accurate. So,please,take my comment with a grain of salt,and please,be civil and don't start a war in the replies,if this comment ever get noticed.) Microsoft have some serious catching up to do.

Still come back and watch this video from time to time. Truly one of the best generations of gaming. I loved my ps3 and that will always be special but the games, people, and atmosphere surrounding the playstation 4 are unmatched. Everytime I watched a ps4 console or game trailer, the music and gameplay would always hype me up. The playstation 4 era will always be something special. Sony really did make a comeback and it was legendary. ❤

Wow, this video is US-centric. The US is the only region where the 360 outsold the PS3, everywhere else the PS3 outsold the 360.

I still remember E3 2013. Microsoft totally torpedoed themselves. All Sony had to do was walk on stage and say "We're not doing what they're doing, also we're $100 cheaper, booyaakashaa". The rest is history.

Boy, was 2013 a hellfire year for the gaming industry. Two shiny-new black boxes with not many games to show for it at launch, but it sure-as-hell meant a lot for how that generation of console gaming was going to go.

I will always remember the highest moments as a gamer. The very first week of Pokemon Go was the most unique experience of my life, and Sony's price reveal of the PS4. When they said $399 EVERYONE knew this generation belonged to Playstation.

People should realize that Sony invented the 5" laser disc that became know as CD's and then evolved to DVD's. Sony also invented Blu-ray. I thought it was funny when people actually thought xbox 360's HD-DVD was going to compete with Blu-ray. The next gen xbox switched to Blu-ray. That kinda sums it up. When you have to use your rivals technology to compete you've already lost. Xbox sucks.

I honestly wish this separation of consoles would end. Crossplay is the most feasible solution to the issue of not being able to play a game with your friend just because he/she happens to be playing the same game on a different platform. The only problem is it's not a common feature in games. GTA V is about to be released for a 3rd time and it still can't be crossplayed. But yeah, congrats Sony.

It's 2023, and still waiting to see what Xbox is going to do, aside trying to acquire as many studios as possible, without releasing much yet...😮‍💨 They sure learned something. It's easier to keep games off your competition, than making a better product and winning over developers.

Sony got so lucky in this generation, both their competitors completely shot themselves in the foot and Sony had built a great reputation in the last generation, and then they had the funniest E3 since RIIIIIIDDDDGGGGGEEEEEEE RAAAACCCEEERRRRR with Sony showing off their way of sharing games. It’s honestly shocking how microsoft thought their anti-consumer TV focuses plans would work. No one wanted that at all.

When my brother got a ps4 in 2014 I didn’t really care that much I was still on my ps3 slim on Batman 2 I was only like 5. When my brother let me play his ps4 I wanted one so badly. 2 years later in 2016 I got the new ps4 slim also remember playing my first shooter bo3 and watch dogs 2 also a bit of gta 5. Then my brother got ps4 vr and when I played it I was blown away how incredible this tech was even though there was not that many games when I got in a fight on vr it scared me. Now in 2023 had the ps5 for 2 months since Christmas 2022 even though it’s great I miss all the memories with ps4 my first proper console ahhh good times probably go back to it in 4 years

The Ninth Generation could be the toughest for traditional consoles yet. With Nintendo rebounding from the Wii U to the Switch, a massive uptake in PC gaming in the last decade, a massive chip shortage, and the PS4 selling incredibly well, I’d expect to watch out for these things listed below during the lifespan of the PS5/Series X: 1. Nintendo will not release a Switch Pro. Instead, it will likely be a full upgrade, the Switch 2. 2. Due to the Switch being underpowered, it’s fair to say that the successor will be on par with a PS4/Xbox One. 3. Due to this, the PS4’s sales have made it appealing to create games that work on both PS4 and Switch 2, just like what happened in the late 2000’s, where many games were released on both PS2 and Wii. 4. Microsoft at some point may take some former multi-plats away from PlayStation after their buying bonanza. It may start with a few small games, or straight up pulling CoD away. 5. Both Sony and Microsoft have realised they can no longer compete on Nintendo’s turf (I.e. handhelds and family friendly games). Instead, they have moved to ‘competing’ with PC platforms. There’s a reason why digital only consoles exist, and it’s because PCs have had it for years. I’d watch out this generation, and look very closely as well.

1. Great first impression. 2. Consistency on established brand identity 3. Not fuckin up consumer's goodwill/ trust (too much) 4. Competitors fumble on the prior notes for years 5. Common logic/ basic marketing knowledge..... something that's somehow a rarity these days.

I’m here in 2022 watching this fantastic documentary again for the 50th time haha (yes I think it’s that good that I have watched it 50 times) after FINALLY being able to get a PS5!! I LOVED my PS4’s and yes I had multiple PS4 consoles because at different times in the last 9 years I’ve had to sell them for cash due to being unemployed for long periods of time before finally receiving my 100% P&T (Permanent and Total) VA disability rating last year, so now I’m officially a “Fully Disabled Combat Veteran”. Plus I also purchased the different versions/revisions of the PS4 especially the PS4 Pro which I LOVED, except for one issue and that being the fact that whenever I would play a game like Red Dead Redemption II it always sounded like a jet engine was running!! I can’t wait for Ryan to do another one of these PHENOMENAL documentaries about the PS5!!!

I think Microsoft can compete again, but it's hard because when you think of it, the people they lost to PS4 are probably in love with exclusives like GoW, Spiderman, Uncharted, Horizon. I don't think those people are willing to let go of these games, and talented developers.

as someone who has an xbox one, i can say that i barely used it. i only have 6 disks and 5 online games for the xbox. im sure the PS5 will be better and the PS4 was better.

It’s poetic Isn’t it PS3: Sony was overconfident, therefore lost the generation Xbox 360: MS was competitive, therefore won the generation. PS4: Sony learned form it’s mistakes and was competitive, therefore won the generation Xbox One: MS didn’t learn form it’s mistakes and was overconfident, therefore lost the generation. And know both companies have learned their lesson and have never been more competitive than now. I Hope PS5 continues kicking ass I Hope Xbox Series X makes a Comeback A Competitive Generation is a better Generation. I Rest my case.

I remember later trading my PS4 Fat for an XBOX One X which, i' m still using it honestly despite that the Series X rolled out, XBOX One X is still does the job for me, however, i 'm planning to get a PS5 as soon as i see some sort of a reasonable price

XBOX is in the shadows now… I don’t think they’re coming back. PlayStation is still dominating the market 3 years after the release of the PS5. The rivalry is pretty much over at this point. Edit: The date is December 25th, 2022.

I've been with Playstation since Final Fantasy 7 released with Metal Gear solid. Through thick and thin because Playstation never disappoint in one thing and that is games! See you all in PS5 midnight release!

I like how Sony didn't give up on the PS3, it brought the fight back to Microsoft by fixing everything they did wrong and in the end, slightly surpassed the 360 in sales. Meanwhile MS has kinda given up on the Xbox One. I think the problem was that the PS1 and PS2 were both curb stomping the opposition into oblivion, if you wanted large, great libraries for the 5th and 6th gen consoles, you had to pick the Sony consoles. Though, I don't think the PS3 announcement was that bad. It was offering full backwards compatibility, bluray, and free online, unlike the 360. Long term, it would be a better purchase. I think the main problem for Sony, was the price and the marketing deals MS had with third parties. PS3 was still a hit mostly thanks to European and Asian gamers. The only Sony console that flopped was the Vita, which was their own fault for not supporting it. As for the PS4, it might end up selling slightly more than the PS1 by the time they stop producing it.

Sony learned a lesson in PS3, and applied it to PS4..... But completely forgot it for PS5. 70$ Games, Dual Entitlement/paid upgrade paths from ps4 to ps5 games, push for cross gen and remasters/remakes, increasing the PS5 price despite using cheaper or less materials in newer models, suing third party accessories like DBrand darkplates, and letting Microsoft acquisitions get to Sony's head when they should just focus on making next gen games like always. Ah sh*t, here we go again.
