This video shows the replacement of a faulty HDMI Encoder IC on a newer revision CUH-1200 PlayStation 4 video games console. This machine showed a black screen / white light when powered on. This tutorial shows you how to replace the newer-style Panasonic MN864729 QFN IC to restore video / audio output.

HI Andrew ! Nice video ! I wanted to ask you for some quick advice ! I dissasembled the ps4 measured every filter no short to ground between the filters and the hdmi ic, the hdmi port looks good under scope, i bought the chip mn864729 but when i try to desolder the old chip with some 485 C and lvl 6 out of 7 at airflow (don't have actual speed in liters/min) it doesn't budge. My gordak 952 is capped at 500 C but you say you dont even need 500 degrees to desolder the old one. What flux do i need ? can you give me some links ? or another solution to get this to budge by it's own and not force it so i don't damage pins. Ty very much

sometimes I add some low melt solder paste to bring the melting temp of the no lead solder down. I then have to clean all the solder off and apply new solder, but sometimes its easier to do that anyways.

My scope is an Amscope SM-4TPZFRL. It comes with a 3MP USB camera however I have since upgraded to a HDMI camera as an aftermarket upgrade which can be seen in this video - the capture device it's plugged into and RU-vid encoding doesn't do the image quality justice sadly. Price to the UK by the time shipping and customs charges are accounted for were just over £850 and would probably be pushing past that now to approx £1k with the GBP to USD exchange rate being as weak as it is. However, it is a very highly recommended piece of kit.

Hi Andrew, another excellent video. Just to let you know this is quite relevant for the Xbox One as well in terms of testing the HDMI port and EMI/ESD filters. Don't believe there is a separate HDMI Encoder IC. About 13 minutes in you show how to test continuity and sure enough on the Xbox One I had which was showing artifacts, picture dropping in and out, or just no picture at all was testing continuity between left and right pins. The filters are labeled EG8B1 and EG8B2 and removing them completely resolved the issues. I picked up replacements on mouser.com part # TPD4E02B04DQAR. Thanks again.

Hi Andrew, i've replaced many encoder BGA for Ps4 1200, but when i use mn864729 "new" thy don't "take" the solder, when i use the same chip take from another console ( for example with blue led) it work perfectly. Have you never buy the chip or you have even use that replaced from other ps4 12xx ? I have also try to clean them, but they have an oxide strate on.

Hi, Yes I only use new MN864729 - lifted QFNs you can never be sure of the longevity as these are fairly weak components at the best of times. If I were you I'd use a good quality flux like Amtech NC-559-V2-TF, run a bead around the edge of the QFN and with a sufficiently powerful iron and good sized tip run a bead of quality leaded solder around the pads. They should take it up and it'll make it much easier to solder to the board with hot air after that.

Hopefully in a few months we can get 10x these chips for the price they are now. Around $30 USD for one on eBay...AND they say "New" which they are clearly not. They are all pulled from one PS4 or another. Same story with the original models. They were very expensive at first...but now they are much cheaper and can be bought in bulk to have on hand. We just need to give it a little more time and we'll be paying a fraction of the cost. as always, Andrew, nice video.

Thank you so much Andrew! I followed your process to the T and was successful at replacing the HDMI Encoder IC on a CUH-2215B. A cockroach cause a short on opposite side of the board and blew a hole through the HDMI Encoder IC as well. Was focusing heat on the edges of the chip and kept having a short in the filters. I focused instead on the middle and changed my flux and it worked

Hello Andrew, I got a 1216A PS4 from ebay who is missing 3 capacitors on the left of the HDMI IC. I have a PS4 1000 series board that I use for spares, but I don't know the values of these 3 capacitors! If you can help, it would be amazing. thanks a lot

Why not pull the lead free solder off and add leaded to help lower required temp on the IC installation?

You could but it's not imperative. Remember these things are installed during production with lead-free solder and are designed to withstand the required temperatures. It's only due to inefficient or incorrect installation techniques when the temperatures involved go beyond tolerance and will then damage the IC.

Hi i tried to fix/kill :) (just a hobby for me) a ps4 Sab-001 wlod with hdmi port broken. I changed the port measured every pin etc... Then measured hmdi filters all had right side (bottom to top as in your video) OL. I took them down and powered the board just to see if I get the white light and :( surprise continuous blod. I Verified everything again checked all board visually few times nothing obvious. Any tips? Thanks

how do I test the HDMI port, how do I test the IC chip, had a lightning strike. My PS4 pro turns on and I can hear the sound on the optical cable, but the picture does not display, on the screen says no HDMI signal, however when I turn on the PS4 it will turn on my television through the HDMI port and when I turn the PlayStation off it will turn the television off.

got a slim SAC-002. boot to white light. i changed the hdmi port and tryed 3 diffrent Panasonic MN864729 encoder ic,s even one bought new. console still boots to white light no picture any ideas? the motherboard is slightly diffrent to yours in video.

Have you checked the EMI filters for continuity? Also, do you have any means of microscopic inspection equipment to check the landing of the QFN? By eye it can look fine but you can only really see if it's properly soldered with some serious magnification.

yes i forgot to say i checked all the emi filters and they are all good. yes i have a microscope so i double checked all pins are ok on the encoder ic. have you ever worked on any SAC-002 versions as the hdmi pinouts are diffrent on this version. and theres no local diodes nearbye the hdmi port apart from one on the left side from pin 1.. so not sure what other diodes or resistors on the hdmi curcuit to check. as theres no schematics for these, and i dont have a donor board to compare.

Well in my opinons this one is easier to replace than th MN86471A from the first gen, for my first one it took me 15min because you dont need to do each pad one by one, for this one i remove all the tin even in the center then use solder paste in the center then align it with hot air, after that flux all around and tin on your tip then you slide your tip each side, you look if every pins is good if yes then its done !! But we all have our own method so good diag and nice work !!

Andrew, my filters have continuity on first and third filter when tested crossed.I also tested the HDMI port with a exposed HDMI connector and I get electricity reading near each pin from 1st pin to 19th pin but no beep on continuity mode. Is my HDMI circuity doomed or should I just replace filters and port?

Hi Pascal, The trick is to hold the IC in place with tweezers until the solder flows beneath. Heat the solder and pads on the motherboard prior to offering up the IC to minimise the amount of heat you apply to the IC and the amount of time you need to hold the IC steady while the solder flows to attach the IC. Once it's attached to the large ground pad in the centre then the airflow won't blow the IC from the board. Once the chip is attached to the board, add flux and let surface tension do the work to pull the IC into its final position. A quick push down at the end of the cycle to ensure each pad is in contact and you're done :-)

Hi Andrew love the videos. They are very helpful!! I have a CUH-12xx ps4 that had several pins shorted and went away when I removed the encoder chip. But the new replacement one doesn’t let the solder stick to the little things on the side. I took it off and tried again. This time about half of them wetted to the board. I had nice even pads and just enough in middle ground plane. Have you ever had any chips do that?? Wondering if it is something I’m doing or if some chips are junk and that’s how hey act?

I have had this issue with my ps4. First time was about a year ago when this happened once, then after a few hours fixed itself. Then it happened again two weeks ago, and again fixed itself after two days. Three days ago it happened again, and once again it fixed itself for abot 30 minutes until it happened again. Definitely has to be a motherboard issue right?

Can't say that I have - heard from a couple of sources that one or two earlier consoles this did work for however I just get them swapped out as probability is that the chip is toast.

Hello Andrew, I got a CUH-1216A ps4 for repair. This ps4 gives light white noise output in the normal video output and sometimes no sound output for short times. I did a reflow of the HDMI IC, which went perfect, I got heavy white noise output, so the problem got worse. Before that I checked the filters and resoldered them with leaded solder, and checked continuity. What should you do ? Replace hdmi connector or replace hdmi IC first ?

Hi, if the connector looks fine then I'd replace the IC. Sound artifacts are usually indicative of an IC failure.

In the meanwhile, before I red your answer, I replaced the hdmi connector, but that wasn't the problem. Tomorrow I will replace the hdmi IC.

Replaced hdmi ic and everything is working again. Had to clean the hdmi connector, because flux went to the pins. A toothbrush, pressed air and IPA, did wonders. I have a great idea, what about designing a PCB, which will be connected to the input lines of the HDMI part, which will solve every WLOD, no matter how much the hdmi part has been damaged. Should that be possible ? That should also be possible with Blayray drives, for which the controller board part, is on the mobo. Of course we need to move the Renesas chip to the controller board. Need to go into dept in my Basic Electronics book, to understand everything. I am a mechanical engineer, not an electronical engineer.....

To be honest you can either take them from a defunct board, PS3 motherboard or if all else fails bridge a wire - all will do the same job but I'd recommend replacing it rather than bridging it at least long-term. I'm not sure of a part number - without schematics it's pretty hard to say.

It's flux paste - Amtech NC559-V2-TF to be precise. Any Panasonic MN864729 will do.

I've got an odd one of these in. After a long session (hot console), it still functions normally but no longer displays a picture. Sound is still heard. The console stays like this until restarted.

Bro i have a question I have few PS4 s which aüre not willing to work. Changed HDMI Port, changed Encoder IC. Everything lined up good and didnt use much heat. Around 250 C. But the ps4 still wont show any sign of Video Output. Checked the small transistors, ema Filters, Diodes they all are ok and are not shorted. What the hell can be the issue? Thanks in advance

If you have shorts left-to-right across the filters then the likelihood is that the IC is defective. To test, remove the affected filter and retest it off the board. If the short disappears, but is still present on the now vacant pads on the PS4 motherboard then the IC itself is faulty and must be changed.

Hi, The second number is just a batch / serial and doesn't matter. As long as it's an MN864729 it'll work fine.

Hi Andrew. I did this repair after your Guidiance and Device was working great after replacing the Encoder . Now after 10 Days the Guy called me that he has no Video/Sound Output again... So that didnßt lasted very long but... how can this be? I need to check the Device of cause as soon as it arrives here but my thought is, there might be something else causing the Device to blow again and again. Maybe you have a clue what could cause this behaviour. Thanks a lot Mate.

Indeed. Sometimes if you have a dry-joint beneath the IC it can 'go' again shortly after - even working fine working for a few days beforehand. Give it a good reflow and see if it comes back to life - if not and the IC itself is damaged again then I'll more-or-less guarantee this is something in the users' setup damaging the IC. Often in these scenarios it's either a faulty HDMI cable or the user is running the PS4 through a cheap HDMI switch or converter (i.e. HDMI to DVI etc). I also find some cheap off-brand TV sets can be more prone to damaging the IC than a 'branded' set.

I have here a 1200 model and when testing the emi filter, one had crosscontact, took an other board tested the filter and it was good, after replacing the faulty filter the new filter also had crosscontact? Tried it with 3 filters that I tested before taking it off and every od them had cross contact on the 1200 board... I did take the emi filters off an saa/sab board. Thanks in advance

Hi, It's likely to be a short across the differential pairing within the Encoder IC. If you remove the encoder IC, I bet you'll find the short in the EMI filter will suddenly disappear. If it does, replace the IC with a new part. The filters from an SAA/SAB revision board work fine on the SAC so you should be fine with those in place.

Hello andrew! As you said after removing the hdmi chip the filter didnt crosscontact. After placing an other hdmi chip, i started the ps4 but i only got a blue screen with black lines and no sound at all... i assume this hdmi chip is also broke?

Very possibly so - either that or a shorted pair of pads around the IC somewhere. There's some life there though so it's progress ha ha! :)

Could be a bad antenna, loose connection into the BNC connector or a physically faulty BT/WiFi module.

Hi Andrew, I could use a little help if you don't mind. I've replaced the HDMI port on a PS4 (I have done many with success) and am having an issue with this this latest one where there is no video, but audio is okay. I can hear the menu background music, and the TV sees a signal. Its just black display. Tested continuity to all the test points from the HDMI pins and all are solid. Any components near the encoder IC that just deal with audio? Just found your channel BTW and am working my way through your backlog of videos. Great content, and thank you for putting it up!

Are the EMI filters intact? Also, have you replaced the encoder with a known-good part to rule that possibility out?

Yes, the filters were good. I tested the continuity through them as you did in this video. Havent replaced the encoder IC yet, but I did resolder the legs. I'll replace encoder today when it gets delivered and report back if it worked.

Thanks for your help Andrew. Just wanted to report back that when I went to replace the encoder I took one last look at the pins and realized that there was indeed the tiniest, thinnest solder bridge I'd ever seen between the right most pin and the one next to it. I first thought it was just a bit of flux catching the light from my scope but i cleared it out anyways and voila. Everything was right as rain again. Anyways, thanks again for responding, and thank you for these videos. Thanks to you I'm feeling confident for whenever I do need to replace the encoder IC :)

No, it's an 8.4mm diameter tip. That is the middle of the three provided sizes. The tip in use on this video is an add-on nozzle (it's kinked to allow use under the 'scope) - part No. M207.

Rework station setting is 485C @ 100l/min. Lead-free solder will melt @ 217C but you'll need the additional heat and high airflow to heatsoak the board to be able to lift the IC easily and without damage to the motherboard.

Depends really - you'd be best measuring like for like but as a general rule SAA/SAB boards are going to be largely similar, SAC will need comparing with SAC and SAD with SAD.

hello paul there is some way to repair, replace or make a fix or buy the piece. the coals that go up the chip. if there is a bad one of them either broken etc. as I replaced it to repair it, some idea, grace paul for your prompt response beforehand.
