Had me scared for a second haha. But you were only talking about them forcing you to only game mode itself instead of leaving options open. But the vrr looks to be working great which is awesome.
Works fine but I really hope that we see most games taking the Ratchet & Clank approach unlocking the frame rate beyond 60 fps. Made it feel quite a bit smoother with approx 10% higher fps on average
10% higher on average? I played for 2 hours and it was mostly running 80 to 100 fps so a good chunk more than 10%. It did sometimes sit around the 75 mark but not often
@@malazan6004 I guess we just played different sections of the game. I played mostly reflection dense city areas in Performance RT mode and performance was between 60-70 fps there. Even that would already be great but if it‘s even more in other areas that‘s even better 👍
for all the X900H/X90H peeps out there. Go into your Picture Settings > Brightness > Adv contrast enhancer and set it to High and you'll see a brighter picture. BTW there's a new firmware update for the X900H as of yesterday 4/25!
@@malazan6004 Yeah, typically below 48hz causes LFC (low framerate compensation) to kick in which duplicates frames when under the true VRR range of the display device. On my Samsung Q70A you can see it in the game bar. If my game is running in the 30-40ish fps range the refresh rate of the TV will be matched to exactly double, this is with my RTX 3080. I expect that the PS5 will behave in a similar way. My TV says that it's VRR range is 20-120, but in reality its lower bound without LFC is around 40 to 48 like you said.
@@RickyRozayyy it does get higher when not using fidelity mode. I messed around with Ratchet and Spiderman last night. With fidelity mode, I can see that it usually runs over 40fps while using VRR. The previous fps cap was 40fps on 120hertz displays. It is visibly higher than that with VRR, but not much. However when using the 60fps modes, the frame rates are also increased. It was definitely playing over 60fps in performance modes. I believe that it does indeed reach around 75-100 fps in performance modes with VRR enabled.
Yeah also more 40fps aswell as most 30fps games could reach 40fps as they usually have head room. 40fps is way better than 30fps and you get the Fidelity Graphics aswell so best image possible.
Hey Vincent Teoh apparently Sony released a brand new Sony Bravia X900H x90h firmware update yesterday for North America and there must be a new one for other regions. Are you able to examine this new firmware update for April 2022 and Sony Bravia X900H x90h and PS5/XboxSX?
You were the only one to answer this question for me and I have been wondering I didn’t even think to restart my console which I usually would!! you are a legend sir!! ✌️😎👌🇨🇦
This VRR to me feels like more frame rate without sacrificing fidelity. Also I don’t need to have my 4K transfer rate at -1 anymore. I don’t know if it’s related but now my image quality is better. I’ll take it!
If anyone has a LG C1 and don't see the VRR option after rebooting the PS5. Go into the game optimiser settings on the TV. Toggle the VRR & G-Sync off and back on. I now have the option on the PS5.
Yeah I was surprised to see that the update is already in video settings without an update. Tested Spider-Man PS5 and it is incredible. Now nobody can talk about PS5 not having VRR.
Finally they've added it. Ridiculous it took them this long and they deserve all the shit they were getting for it. I'm excited to check out some of these games using the new vrr features
@@pixelslaughter3492 Yeah I won’t lie it sucks that it took so long, but to be fair, most people don’t have a TV that has VRR. They don’t even know what VRR is. But those of us that do, it’s nice to have for a lot of games that have performance issues.
@@Jordanfiend361 I pretty much just assume that anytime I’m on the internet there’s going to be somebody crying about something. I’ve accepted people just use the internet to vent their frustrations about… literally everything, even when nobody asked
The Restart as you describe did nothing on any of my one(1) playstation 5's. A shut-down and then turn back on made the vrr feature show up in screen and video settings.
Hey Vincent. I was wondering if you know or think VRR is recommended with the xh90 yet ? Have any of the latest software fixed the issues you brought up a few months ago
I got the X900H, it's the same as the XH90. So far it's worked fine, I haven't noticed any issues with VRR. When VRR was released on it a while ago I did notice it didn't look good/right. That seems to have been resolved though. Should be good to go!
I really hope uncapped frame rate modes targeting the use of VRR become the new normal in console gaming. Locked 60fps feels pretty good, but 80+ brings a whole new level of smoothness and input latency. I'd love it combined with dynamic res scaling to target different performance ranges, but I'm guessing that's too much to ask. I'm just glad Insomniac did it right off.
@@dante19890 Or games like CoD, where running 120fps performance mode sometimes dips to 112fps and introduces minor screen tearing. This is an excellent addition to all high fps shooter titles.
Gave my PS5 a quick test this morning to see if it works. 1) It does work on HDMI2.0b (at least with my Samsung Q9FN 2) You DO need to have Freesync or equivalent enabled on the TV. Otherwise the PS5 just says your TV doesn't have it. 3) I tried "non compatiable" game Returnal and sure enough it was a mess. Kept dropping out of the game to Samsung TV pages before coming back again. Not great, so turned that feature off. I guess it will get better over time and that all new games will work well with it and some older ones getting patched to work better. PS still has some catching up to Microsoft in this area, but at least they are making progress on that now.
@@Rin_FGC The feature "HDMI VRR" is included in the 2.1 standard but older devices may yet support it on top of the HDMI 2.0 features. However, not all HDMI 2.1 devices will always support VRR, ALL (!!!) HDMI 2.1 features are optional.
@@cvzone Thanks for the info. Maybe you could also tell me if VRR is worth using on OLED since it apparently raises the black levels? I know Vincent did some videos on the topic. But then again I have a C9 and people don't seem to be having much luck getting PS5 VRR to work with it.
I'm in a similar situation (q6fn, hdmi 2.0b) and it appears to work well in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Cyberpunk 2077 and Valhalla however have intermittent black screens when loading. Didn't get a chance yet to see how those two do in extended gameplay. Astro worked flawlessly
I'm not Vincent but I tested two games on my CX in 30fps modes and the freesync toggle shows it as 60hz which I believe is LFC working as intended. It didn't really feel smoother to me though so what is so good about LFC?
Sony XH900 with VRR ONi n HDMI 4 and game mode. X dynamic range and auto dimming are inactive with VRR ON and the brightness is too low. Same with series X. Any solutions ? Thanks
Another factor that Sony forgot. If you use your PS5 to watch 4k blu ray discs, be prepared to go deep into your TV settings every time you want to switch between VRR games and Custom Picture mode for movies on the X90J.
I leave it off and only turn on for specific games. I have the x90j and feel like the limiting factor of image control hurts most games. I rather have an occasional dip.
Exactly my understanding and for Performance mode this could also mean going beyond 60fps but only in a game that supports it. Hopefully most future games will.
At long last! VRR has often been a reason for me buying a game on Series X - but now it pretty much comes down to whichever has more storage space at the time
One downside with Sony VRR supported tvs is that when enabling it through the tv settings, you are always stuck in game mode even when playing 4k blu rays. Sony should push a fix.
@@jharris-pdxrides yea all Sony TVs that have VRR have to use the VRR format or it won't even show up which is crazy because Sony never said anything I wouldn't have know that the VRR was available if I wasnt watching youtube at the time
So, if I'm understanding this right, if a game doesn't specifically get an update to unlock the framerates the fps will remain capped. The system wide VRR will smooth out fps dips that fall below the fps cap of the game, but won't go over the games cap of 60 or 30fps. And with the select few games that get a specific update for it, the framerate cap is removed. Allowing for frame rates to exceed the previous fps cap. Like, Spiderman and Ratchet and Clank will run over 60fps in performance modes, and over 30/40 fps in its fidelity modes. So unless a game takes advantage of it, we won't necessarily see an upped frame rate. But it will smooth out fps dips below the cap. Right?
basically VRR is only relevent in games that has an uncapped framerate. If a games runs at locked 30fps or 60fps than vrr isnt gonna do anything. But some games have recieved a patched that removes the framerate cap and can be used with VRR.
Yeah just played rift apart with VRR. finally I feel like I’m back on the PC with free sync (although I much prefer G sync module on my Asus PG27UQ) It makes such a huge difference with frame pacing and input camera judder! Smooth
@@malazan6004 Dedicated module feels a lot smoother and is all around just way better when playing high refresh. That’s why actual gsync monitors are always more expensive because of the extra hardware. but if you’re a serious gamer it’s worth it. for me I am basically a hard-core casual gamer non-competitive. I Like the camera panning to always be as smooth as possible with no judder or stutter. I remember the first time I played on an actual G sync module I was like holy shit what a difference versus freesync. It’s like night and day on my 3080ti. Of course this was with days gone. first person shooters most people do not like to even enable VRR and game @ 360 hz lol
I actually see this as bad news, I was hoping the same update that brought VRR would also let you turn ALLM off. Now we learn it was the same update all along. I actually haven't even installed this update on my PS5 yet, so I could use it without forced ALLM if I wanted to, but then I also won't have VRR. So I'm simply not going to use it at all until we get another update which hopefully gives a toggle.
I've tried about 20 games so far that aren't considered supported and all worked just like my PC with Gsync. I guess the supported ones mostly have new features like unlocked frame rate with ratchet
Do you have examples? I tried a lot of games too but all of them seem to be FIXED and VRR is disabled on my LG OLED CX. So they are running in 60 fps. VRR is useless for older games if the games are locked at 30 or 60 fps. What games did you found which have an uncapped frame rate?
@@sfk-fjordan maybe they still need time to work it out, exclusives might have a quick update but third party might took long, This is why Xbox is already unlock vrr upon release so they don't need to rework the games this gen.
Elden ring and devil may cry 5 were game changers with it on. I could finally play the 4K ray tracing performance mode and it felt like 120. One of the best features added to the console and can’t wait for more games to start releasing with uncapped framerates so we can take advantage
I've got a LG C1. I can't find on the settings screen where the "Video Range" option is listed. Does this model have this toggle option? If so where is it listed?
On my LG CX tv, VRR option on my PS5 was only available once I switched off AMD free sync on the picture settings of the LG TV. Thanks for your post and the information you put in.

@@jamesfen73 thanks for mentioning the HDMI. I used the PS5 one (i believe) but when I switched to a different cable it got enabled on by default. So guess the cable was the problem?
I have an x90j, maybe I’m a noob that doesn’t know about tvs, but it looks like after enabling it I’m getting black flickering on the screen, does that only happen oleds or what I am seeing accurate? If so is there a way to get 120 fps 4k vrr without the flickering?
Shot in the dark, but are you aware of a frame rate issue affecting Sony TVs (X900F, X90J) playing blu-rays on the PS5? The TVs correctly interpret the blu-ray picture output from the PS5 as 24hz (confirmed by TV's display feature), but plays back at a higher frame rate creating a soap opera effect. This happens regardless of motion smoothing settings. This problem counterintuitively was fixed by turning off the option to output in 24hz on PS4, but that's been removed on PS5.
In an LG C1 I've noticed the colors get darker and with less saturation with vrr on. But difference is noticeable. I've tested It in GTA online while on cayo perico island because that's where I get more fps drops
Can you check that there's no extreme difference in color depth and contrast in Rift Apart? On my LG C9 I'm getting very different images in game mode with HGIG on. With VRR off most shadow detail is lifted quite significantly and there's a more flat color space.
I think that is what he meant with the black level range! Make sure to set your TV black level to automatic and also set your RGB range on the PS5 on automatic!
He just explained that colors become washed out because of the HDMI 2.1 limit to 32Gbit/s which drops HDR to 8bit instead of 10bit when using 120Hz mode.
Tried it on the X900H and it is disappointing. Picture is to dark and the tradeoff of picture brightness for game responsiveness is not worth it, tearing on this tv was few and far between from the get go. I updated the TV to latest firmware btw but that update seems to only fix the 24 frame skip on external Hdd video content.
They also need to fix a problem where VRR mode ITSELF forces Game mode for no reason. Whether ALLM is toggled off or not (you know, for the Xbox). I’m NEVER going to use VRR until the ALLM and VRR issues get fixed.

on the x900h with VRR enabled, the game picture mode that it forces you to be in makes the colors of games look so dull and dim, even though the brightness level is at max. Is there any recommended adjustments in the game mode to help make it more vibrant like it was before being forced to game mode? I notice that putting the gamma level to max seems to help a little, as well as bumping the color level up to 65+.
@@GamingWithAce85 - I increased the color to 68. Gamma is at max. Live Color is on Medium. Can't remember if I changed Adv. Contrast Enhancer, but it's at medium. Everything else I left the same. I've only looked at the difference with Elden Ring, but the color and lighting is looking solid on it.
Hello, to clean the TV, what should we do? Wipe with a dry cloth or spray so that the panel is not damaged, and clean it every once in a while for dust
I would like to see you do VRR test on Sony LCD LED TVs because it will most likely be a win win on Oled but LCD LED TVs will possibly have local dimming or other features disabled and I don't know if its worth that trade off when most games don't have much noticeable dips except like Ellen rings and Cyberpunk but I don't play either of those
It’s not a worthy trade off, you’re right. When I have VRR turned off, I play on 4K 120HZ, smooth as hell gameplay! When I turn VRR on, and play at 4K 120Hz, the gameplay is still smooth, but the screen gets a little darker/dimmer. I’m trying to figure it out. I think Vincent said I have to put My TV’s video range in AUTO or LIMITED. Not HIGH.
@@GamingWithAce85 yea idk whats up with that but at the moment it seem to be a slight trade off but hopefully it gets better with the next update but its working pretty good so far just need minor tweaking imo
It might be worth it only for games that have really rough frame rates or graphics modes like in Deathloop that almost hit 60fps but hover in 50s. Ofcourse games that are locked 60 majority of the time won't have much benefit or any at all

When I do this same thing with my PC and G-sync I can see the TV frames move according to the games FPS...Any thoughts on why the C9 is locked on 120 with VRR on using the PS5?
Same here. Tried this out on Spiderman. The game looks noticably smoother especially on fidelity, but a little worried about not seeing the number fluctuate

But it's also day time here and my TV is calibrated for night (when I usually use it) so I will have to return to this question as there were a lot of reflections and other things that prevented a great assessment of anything other than the motion of the image. I'll try switching VRR on and off tonight and see how big of a difference it makes to the black levels. For me, regardless, the smoother visuals would be well worth any fine tuning I would have to on the black levels, at least on Elden Ring on the PS5. @@coderedtonio I own the C9 and have zero stuttering or screen tearing at all on Spider-Man in performance mode which runs around 90-100fps. Much better than the previous 60fps max.
Vincent, I don't know if you or LG are aware of a strange issue that the LG B9 has while using the PS5 for long durations with VRR enabled games running at 120hz. The games themselves look absolutely fine with VRR behaving as it should, but if you switch the TV back to any other input which has picture settings with any level of smooth motion enabled the frame interpolation breaks totally. What you end up with is erratic motion more akin to NTSC inverse-field dominance but worse and with very bad digital artefacts. The only way that I've found to return the image to normal is by unplugging the TV for a cold reboot, or by running a game which has the option to switch on and off 120hz support (like Spiderman). This technique has been inconsistent at times though. This is definitely an issue for an LG firmware update. What do you think Vincent?
That explains why FF14 doesn’t look too different for me. The dips get well below that lol did anyone confirm this by chance or is that your Experience
