You mentioned 922r compliance in regards to the small parts for the build. However, 922r only applies to imported rifles. Since this rifle has an American-built receiver, you don't have to worry about 922r.
+GhostFoxvonBohmen Right, I only mentioned it to point out that not all the parts in their kits are US made. This may matter to some, but not me so much. PSA indicates the following are not 922r compliant in their build kits: bolt carrier, gas piston, trigger, hammer, disconnector, and muzzle brake. I assume they mention this in case someone buys their build kit to use on a different barrel and receiver that does require 922r.
You know what, I got to looking into this more and it appears this gun would fall under 922r. I think that's why psa mentions it on their website. Since this is a copy of the ak design, a gun that is banned from import, then a banned gun that is assembled here can only contain 10 non-US made parts. I count 6 that psa lists that are imported so I'm good to go, but then if I use a non US made magazine, there's another non compliant part (or maybe more, seems like magazines are counted for more than one part cause of the follower and spring and such). Anyway, just thought I'd share after reading some about this one one of the forums.
same part broke on mine too! PSA sent me another as well. I JB welded it back together and have been shooting it to see if it would hold just to see. after 300 rounds, its still holding.
+Robert Kiernan I never thought of doing that. Glad it's working for you. But keep in mind PSA will take care of you if you just contact them about it. I emailed them, got a response that they would send my pics to the manufacturing department. I didn't hear another thing from them, then a few days later got a new recoil assembly in the mail.
I got one of those with that red stock included. I didn't like how the rear sling swivel was in the wrong place and, the pistol grip is too small and, slippery for, my tast. I changed to a standard military AKM wood furniture kit on mine.
I like it too, but it isn't my work. That's how it came from PSA. I think it's a Boyd's stock. Same one PSA is currently offering for their gen2 PSAK47.
nice looking AK...put a G2 trigger or ALG trigger that will help. I wish these had a chrome lined barrel. These are not in stock at this time at Palmetto.
Yeah, I thought of changing the trigger, but it has since worked itself out. Chrome lining is nice, but not necessary in my opinion unless you plan on putting a thousand rounds a month and/or a lot of sustained burst mag dumps, which I don't. A lot of ak (and ar for that matter) people swear by chrome lining, but the nitride and melonite finishes PSA has been using are proving as durable without the potential loss of accuracy that chrome lining is known for. But to each his own. Thanks for watching and the comment.
+DEEE STROYED Yeah, it was, but that was the very first shot fired from the gun, literally. I had a few baubles until everything got worked in. I wonder if this had anything to do with the recoil spring that eventually broke though.
Actually looking at yours disassembled, you got a completely different gun than me. The entire recever, rear trunion, trigger pack, all different. Hmn.
I got it sometime back in October I think. Not long after they released them. Do yourself a favor and save some trouble by getting the gen 2 kit. The gen 2 has the front sight already installed and has a sling loop on the lower hanguard retainer. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
+DEEE STROYED lol, you caught my mispronunciation of bolt! I started to edit that out, but forgot, lol. I didn't have issues with that, although I've heard some have.
If your top cover was that tight then chances are that your rear sight was pressed on too far. Also you should be modifying the top cover to fit, not your trunnion.
Well, actually it turned out to be the recoil assembly not seating into the trunnion as it should. Still the rear trunnions fault ultimately, but with a surplus recoil assembly I threw in it, the cover fits fine.
my PSA gen 1 kit miss fire pin and all the spring in the bolt. also my front sight too loose I can use my finger to move left to right. and need a lot for fitment too. ( gas tube, upper & lower magpul handguard & dust cover; They are AR15 is good but AK ~_~ ....
+Keith Ng I'm seeing several that have had issues with their AKs. Other than the issues I had in the video, mine came with all the parts and such. I think it's a good start for them, they just need to work out the bugs and go with forged trunnions in the future. Maybe they'll be as good with their Ak line as they are with the ARs eventually. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.
Yes, technically you are right, but PSA called this an ak47, specifically the PSAK47. Guess they figured they'd sell better since most people colloquially referred to most akms as ak47 anyway. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Still running with no problems other than the trigger issue? How many rounds down the pipe currently? I'm really liking what I'm seeing of the gen 2, AKOU is testing one currently. The trunnions are supposed to be milled from billet steel with this new one. Not sure if that's as good or better than forged probably depends on the quality of the steel they used.
Yeah, no more rounds through it since this series of videos. I think my last count was around 600 rounds and the trigger issue hadn't reoccured in the last few hundred rounds. I've been playing with other guns at the range lately and haven't had this one back out. I like the gen 2 as well and may give one a try, but I'm wanting to see how Rob's test goes as well. I kind of felt like a guinea pig with this one, not that it didn't work out well for me, but I probably wouldn't have bought this one with the cast trunnions if I'd a done some research beforehand. I know one thing I'm not worried either way, PSA has always taken care of me with any issues I've ever had with their products.
Hopefully it turns out to hold up in the long run. The price is excellent for these gen 2s. I really like that nitride finish and the PSA logo on the receiver. Also the accuracy testing he did was impressive going from cold bore to hot.
Boris says Kapitalists cannot build AK. Simple but not so simple. That REd is not red star red. It is Chinese restaurant red. The PSA Aks will be out in March 2016. Lots of improvements are promised. Like it might even work.... So I bought an Npap instead. LOng live SERBIA.It runs like a SWiss watch. So to speak.
+walter chiappini lol, yeah, there isn't anything "wrong" so to speak with this one now, but yeah I too am looking forward to an American AK with forged trunnions. Other than the cast trunnions issue, and a few minor baubles that were fixed, this AK has been pretty good. I agree though this is not red star red, as you say. Nice choice on the Npap, I have an Opap and like it quite well, it's a workhorse.
+darink300zx The Paps are horses that finish the race.Glad to hear U agree. Is the OPAP heavy? I am sure that the US Ak guys will get their act in gear eventually. I just dont want to be the test driver in the meantime. LOng live SErbia. And change that color.Or put some sequins on it.Something....
lol, I'm cool with the color as is. As for the Opap, it's a little heavier than a standard stamped AK, but not so much so that it makes it difficult to use or anything. It's a good gun, I like it.
i bought a barreled receiver and the basic parts kit. its cheap and cheap quality. no where near my zastava in terms of quality. the dust cover doesnt even fit. the action keeps getting stuck. real shit quality. disappointed tosay the least.
+jim02122 obviously everyone's mileage will vary, but my experience wasn't as bad as yours. I found the finish and quality of the parts (other than the dustcover) to be on par if not better than other AK's I've had. Bare in mind though, up until this year I'd never paid more than 400 bucks for an AK before. I've had 2 wasr, a maadi, and a yugo m70ab2. Other than the m70, none of the others had the finish of this PSA. The maadi had the worst finish of all, looked like it was made from battlefield pickup parts, lol. Apart from some fitting that was required during assembly, I've only had two issues with the gun. Granted some will argue that being an AK I shouldn't have had any issues. I mostly agree with that, but I went into this knowing that I was being a guinea pig so to speak, this being PSA's first venture into the AK market, so I'm not going to go as far as to say that this gun should be avoided. So far PSA has been good to me, replacing the recoil spring that broke, so I'll keep shooting it and see how she goes. The trigger reset issue is really the only thing that bothers me, but I do think it will improve as I shoot it. We'll see. Thanks for watching and the comment.
This AK really is garbage. I've got a gen 3 and have shot it 3 times, 500 rounds each session, and had to send it back to palmetto 2 times out of 3 range sessions. The peice of shit is shaving all kinds of metal every time I shoot it. Sending it back for a refund next time. Pure garbage and there repair turn around time will piss ya off real bad. They had my rifle for a month each time. Owned the rifle for 3 months and Palmetto has had it for 2 of those months. They suck.
What is special about this particular AK47 kit? Is it better or worse than your common, say WASR 10, other than it has a mediocre trigger? Why not save some time and just purchase a better quality AK out of the box? Something like Bulgarian-made Arsenal ones? Or, if you like DIY just purchase an excellent and very durable Russian-made Vepr Molot rifle (comes in various popular calibers) and easily convert it to an excellent AK? Granted: a converted this way AK would cost you just about under $1000 (about $1,200- $1,500 if you decide to purchase a ready-to-go out of the box gun) and most likely wouldn't have all wooden furniture, but it would be a much better quality rifle than this PSA AK47!. You don't need to take my word for it, just read about Molot Vepr AKs and watch some extreme beating tests and reviews about this rifle here on youtube. Thumbs up!
Well, nothing is particularly special about this AK, but at the time I did this video the price on this one was lower than even the WASR. Even the 2nd gen PSA build kits, which don't have any cast parts, are coming in on the low side at about 500 bucks. With that said, I don't disagree with you, for very little more you can have a quality comm bloc built Wasr or one of the pap series AK rifles. Now the aesthetics of this AK are generally better than a Wasr, as far as the finish is concerned, imo, but the wasr has the heritage the PSA AKs just don't have. Maybe when I get the gen 2 PSA ak out the the range I'll pull out some other AK's to compare it against, but like I said it's not so much that it's better or worse than a similarly priced AK (unless you're talking IO or RAS47, I do think this is better than them), but it is another option for consumers. Plus, with the Gen 2 kit, I'm pretty sure it's all American made, so people who are into that can consider that a bonus.
darink300zx It is just don't make a logical sense to me buying a gun for the single reason that it's been an American-made gun. I hope that with this new POTUS folks would be able to have their hands on the modern guns from all over the world. Thank you again for this one and your other videos, man: they are widen my limited knowledge about guns.
You're welcome. I get what you're saying exactly, I'm really hoping the ban on Russian AK's will be lifted since it was done by executive order, maybe we can get some cheaper russian made ones again.
You lost me at cast trunions. Plus, PSA had a recall on their AK's. Sigh......I wish we could get QUALITY AK47s for inexpensive. The serious lack of quality control and taking shortcuts on many AK brands is extremely irritating.
News to me, PSA didn't send a recall notice for mine, so they didn't recall all their aks. I probably wouldn't have bought this if I would have known it had cast trunnions beforehand so we can agree on that, but other than what I mentioned in the video it's been problem free for me. Thankfully PSA has upped their game with the gen 2 that doesn't use cast parts. Robski is currently doing a 5000 round review on one, so I may be in for another PSA ak depending on how that turns out. Thanks for watching.
Here's a little more info about the recall. www.tacti-cool.com/industry-news/2015/10/8/palmetto-state-armory-issues-psak47-recall Glad to hear yours is holding up well for you.
+EarthIsFlat ItsAFact I remember that now, but mine must have been a different or later production run as it didn't have this problem nor was it recalled.
This rifle was so heavy hyped as perhaps being one of the best AKs and then I got one. The bolt wouldn't go into battery, and after removing all the oil, I realized that it had the worse finish of an AK thatI have ever seen. What a total long and delayed bust - I will never buy another rifle from PSA. The action is smooth but the trigger feels 10 lbs. Again - a total bust.
+IBTJC 4Life that's unfortunate. You should contact PSA and send it back. They may be a little slow at their customer service, but they will take care of you. They always have me. Sounds like you got an odd one. Other than the guy below who stated similar as you, I hadn't seen anyone else complaining of the finish. The finish on mine is better than any other AK I've owned in the budget AK price range. Finish isn't everything to me though, function is more important. The trigger, yeah, I don't care for it, I'm planning on replacing it. Mine's pull isn't heavy for a military style gun, but I just don't like the feel.
I did send it back for a full refund. I was happy they were willing to do that. Next to my DDI and Definitive Arms, it looked like garbage. The DDI actually has the best finish using KG Gunkote and cost the same and has been a dream for accuracy, trigger and finish.
+walter chiappini the video probably doesn't do it justice, it isn't hideous, at least imo, but I would have liked a deeper, darker red. I'll be leaving it as is though, it's still a very nice looking rifle. To each their own, I always say.
Bet that looks nice. I like the old commbloc look. I've got a newer wasr with some hideous blond wood on it, I'm trying to find an old laminated romanian or other commbloc set to put on it.
You could always refinish that blonde furniture on the WASR with some Minwax Gunstock #231, that color is amazing. It's what I used on my 74 build. Finished it off with six coats of Minwax TungOil and it is just sweet.
That thing turned out nice looking! Can you fast fire a mag with out any issues? I want to build one just to have one I built myself. I have plenty of others to be a go to rifle! Thing looks pretty good man!
+rednecklowlife Yeah, after I got the trigger reset issue worked out it runs like a charm now. Yeah, I have a few other AKs as well, this for me was just something to do, call my own so to speak. It really wasn't much to do though, just fitting of some small parts. The barrel pressed in and headspacing already completed by PSA make it so easy anyone could do it. thanks for the comment.
